NYC’s Despina brings their signature metallic palette to the 909 mix series. Someone we’ve had our eye on for a while now through their releases on Kindergarten and All Centre, Despina is quickly becoming known for their thrilling take on club music. I think RA described their All Centre release as ‘unhinged’ and it feels like an appropriate word to describe this session. It’s robotic, sometimes spiralling out of control before commanding back into action with high energy rollers and percussive-driven rhythms. It has left me very very eager to see them play in a club setting. This itch needs to be scratched asap!

To be ‘lithe’ is to be pliant, limber or flexible. Much like the definition of the word he made his moniker, so too is the sonic output of Meanjin/Brisbane-based producer of the same name. With an intent on finding the middle ground between the jarring or weird, and the flow state that can only come with techno, Lithe’s music is at once considered for its listener while ambitious in the new ground he intends on breaking with each and every release.


Simultaneously straddling the line between introspective and collective listening, Lithe plays with tension and release and incorporates his love of unpredictable and forward-thinking drums and rhythms. All about not only creating intensity in the build ups, as well as ensuring the pay off is worthwhile, Lithe creates music for “the club” in whatever context his listeners find themselves in.


Beginning the project in 2016, Lithe’s prolific output has seen a myriad of self-released and international labels attesting to his relentless work ethic and deep desire to remain creative. Opening himself up to collaboration with his newfound community in Meanjin’s underground dance scene since his relocation in 2020, Lithe has found inspiration and education in equal parts, and with an open mindset to take opportunities and lessons as they arise, he has quickly cemented himself at home and beyond as a fearless collaborator all while elevating his own craft as well.


His tracks have been played at Coachella, Dekmantel, Boiler Room, Pitch Music & Arts, and he’s picked up plenty of global support along the way, including from notable names such as Aphex Twin, Air Max '97, Object Blue and Mor Elian. His releases have found homes on compilations for Egrégore, Early Reflex, Club Late Music, Accidental Meetings, as well as EPs on Flood and Basilica.


In 2022, Lithe now turns his focus to recreating his music live for audiences to engage in a more immersive way. Having always intended on being a live project, Lithe pays tribute to his near two decades of playing in bands as a drummer, bringing his creations to life and inviting people to get to know the person behind the music which was once mysterious and shadowed. Incorporating more vibrancy and colour into his work as it has evolved over the last six years, this year’s iteration of Lithe will see him at his most open and unguarded yet. Intent on sharing not only his creations with those around him but his knowledge and skills too, Lithe is stepping out of the darkness and into the light, and is ready to be seen.
