Decaying Spheres present another incredibly-crafted EP, this one from Yorkshire-based artist Sulk Rooms. Inspired by the concept of
secretive cults and societies, Ceremony initiates the listener into a dark underworld through the blending of rough textures and euphoric movements tinged with a sad but sinister edge.

The elusive, non-sequitur track titles inspire feelings of eeriness and dread. They Told Me They Drove You To It, for instance, pushes its way into the listener’s psyche gradually with subterranean bass movements that rise up from the undergrowth like cold headlights emerging from the night as a vehicle approaches a large meeting place miles from the eyes of civilisation. A towering building appears from out of nowhere, the dissonant euphoria illustrating the structure’s ominous magnitude.

Not only content to convey an overtly dark and macabre scene, tracks like the creepily-named closing song They Killed A Sacred Deer convey a more emotive side to the harrowing sound. Anxious notes float towards the listener, cutting through the gritty dissonance that drifts like sheet rain. There is a sense of tragedy from the repeating minor scale that plays frequently over the track’s runtime, almost like a cinematic shot that slowly reveals the terrifying image of a ritualistic slaughter.

Faceless perpetrators and voyeuristic onlookers haunt Ceremony, grey faces through the murky ambience. Its timbre is simultaneously dark and warm as if it resides in the shadows of some great sepulchral hall. The listening experience is one that phases from daunting and occult to strikingly personal with ease and grace.

With Ceremony, Decaying Spheres offer a uniquely cinematic ambient experience. An eerie, nightmarish wander through a shrouded place full of surreal visions and moving atmospheres.

Coarse droning journeys convey a feeling of obscured identity in a modern landscape with a sense of true beauty at its core...

Meshing an appreciation for cold industrial atmospheres witnessed during time spent in Peoria and Shenzhen with the elevating characteristics of shoegaze and post-rock, Kagami Smile’s release roots out the rewarding and endearing qualities of dark electronic music.

A sense of self veiled by disassociation seems to revolve as the very central point of Obscured Face. Tragic euphoria is bruised and cracked by gauzes of dissonance and depreciation. Any semblance of purity is clouded and co-opted by a staggering visceral texture. Human emotion becomes aged and refracted through reference and replication. But the majesty of the sounds themselves seem to nod towards a small spark of hopefulness, as if the listener were walking towards the most minuscule of lights in a blistering, midnight snowstorm.

A cold and disassociated ambient experience that is not without tinges of light and moments of warmth. Kagami Smile delivers a standout release for his label debut, filled with moments of tremendous power and poignancy.
