Adelaide based Emily Glass, a long-time friend of DECISIONS, establishes the mood with ‘Scribble Machine’, a carnivalesque assemblage of bells and mechanised percussion (Emily also contributed to the compilation’s artwork). Shanghai’s Laughing Ears follows with ’Among The Ashes’, a deftly meted downtempo excursion in her inimitable crepuscular style, giving way to the unhinged polyrhythmic wiggle of Air Max ’97’s ‘Triple Pendulum’. Amsterdam based newcomer Bby Eco pops the lid off an off-world bee hive on ‘Innerlife’, whipping buzzy samples into an urgent lurch. Yre Den returns to DECISIONS with the compilation’s most effervescent number, squishing together bird song, humanoid vocals and synth tones gleaned from an uncanny valley on ‘Bird Spiral’. Bristol’s Ido Plumes picks up the exuberance Yre Den puts down on the epic ‘Walking With The Tasman Abel’, building a uniquely frenetic groove at 171bpm (fun fact: neither Air Max ’97 nor Ido Plumes know how his track was submitted — it simply materialised as the project took shape — quantum entanglement?). On ‘Aurora Torus’ Isomov (somehow) effortlessly meshes a shoe-gazy vocal line with an impossibly plucked harp and what sounds like a melodica over a Y2K Neuro DNB rhythm. Milan based label alumn Oroboro cleaves the compilation in two with ‘Absolute Schism’, a brutal EDM abstraction of charred synthesis and chunky percussion. Sydney’s Hence Therefore contemplates historical agency with the rudely swung screamer ’Path Dependents’, fresh off an outing on BBC Radio 1 in Object Blue’s Essential Mix. Melbourne based maestro CORIN, another long-time friend of the label, shares a lushly textured slice of broken EBM in ’Stealth’, followed by the rolling peak-time paranoia of Atro’s ‘Hafta’ — one of the compilation’s most forthright club weapons. DJ Plead’s ‘STP’ is a hot scoop, gracing Consequences with its fragrantly seasoned percussive presence after countless appearances in your favourite DJs’ setlists. Berlin based newcomer COLLO further elevates the room temperature with the driving polyrhythms and entrancing synths of ‘Bantu Nilote’; the track title nodding to his combined Bantu and Nilotic family background. A blunted SCAM instrumental supports Sevy’s vividly detailed flows on ‘Neighbour Mr Tumnus’, revisiting the fruitful collaborative relationship we first encountered on the ‘Vibrio’ EP. Frankfurt based artist Avbvrn (whose debut full-length album just came out on PH17) closes the compilation with ‘Foment (Recursive)’, in which deep and reflective ambience is scoured by a grinding beat echoing some of his 90s hip hop influences.

Consequences finds kindred spirits in artists unapologetically journeying their own spirals, resulting in a lively multitude of rhythm, sound design and song shapes defying genre and tempo. The compilation seeks to round off a difficult and disruptive year on a generative, community-oriented note.

Für diesen Track habe ich mir extra ein Sonodrum gekauft. Es gab auf meinen Synthesizern keinen ähnlichen Ton, darum blieb mir nichts anderes übrig, als eines zu bestellen. Ich habe ein einzelnes Audio aufgenommen und anschliessend mit den Tasten eingespielt.

Dieser Track ist eine Widmung an ein zuvor von mir gewünschtes und sich anschliessend tatsächlich manifestierendes Ereignis mit einer engelshaften Begegnung am Feuer.

Die Widmung geht vollumfänglich an die uns umfassende Energiematrix in welcher wir uns Alle bewegen, ob wir wollen oder nicht. Es ist grösser als wir denken können, und hat die Fähigkeit alle unsere Herzwünsche zu erfüllen. Es lebt von unserem Vertrauen und unserer Zuversicht, unseren inneren Bildern und ihrem Suggestionspotenzial. Alles ist möglich!!!

Der Schluss des Tracks soll daran erinnern, dass wir zwar Alle in unserer eigenen Realität leben, diese aber ein zauberhaftes Märchen sein kann, in welches ich euch mitnehmen möchte.

For this track I bought a Sonodrum. There was no similar sound on my synthesizers, so I had no choice but to order one. I recorded a single audio and then played it in with the keys.

This track is a dedication to an event that I previously wished for and then actually manifested with an angelic encounter around the fire.

The dedication goes entirely to the energy matrix that encompasses us, in which we all move, whether we like it or not. It is bigger than we can think, and has the ability to fulfill all of our heart's desires. It lives from our trust and confidence, our inner images and their potential for suggestion. Anything is possible!!

The end of the track is a reminder that although we all live in our own reality, it can be a magical fairy tale that I would like to take you into.

Seven orbits is an audiovisual performance designed for immersive sensory experiences.

It plays with the senses through vibration, light and sound to induce potential altered states with an emphasis on the transcendental and animistic connection with the natural world and the divine as can be found in past and present rituals around the world.

The softwares used to create the experience communicate with each other so that the sound, played live on DAW, drive the real-time graphics as well as physical live elements; Further control of the experience is also achieved by using external physical interfaces;

a journey through weird times II

"I’ve been thinking about and listening to SOPHIE’s work since the news of her passing. I’ve been trying to listen to her whole production discography; and I’m struck by the sheer breadth of sounds and ideas that she created while she was with us. 

What her work shows me is that as an artist, musically you can do it all: she forces her listener to never categorise or place her within the limited confines of a single genre; her sounds manage to move through and with so many different kinds of people and musical spaces - she had this unique ability to facilitate world building with her audience during her performances and through everything that she did.

Shilla invited me to contribute to a mix for her series Struma+Iodine, and it feels right to select SOPHIE’s music for this. We should be listening to this together in a room somewhere to process this monumental loss - but instead, I’ve put together some of her tracks that mean the most to me and tried to express the vastness and complexity of her work, although this is just my interpretation.

What’s really helped these past few weeks is seeing the sheer multiplicity in the ways of understanding and celebrating her life and work; so I’ll link to those mixes here (all of which I would highly recommend):
