For me Cordoba, Argentina has been one of the best places to dj and I am sure a lot of the DJs will agree. This time again it didn't fail.. not at all.
The first time I played here was years ago at Lokitas (with the same name at the different location), intimate setup, packed with enthusiastic music lovers. My set was supposed to be 2 hours but it was too good to stop in such short hours, at the end it had lasted for good 11 hours...!! 
This 2nd release of my new Podcast series features the live recording from the recent Argentinean tour in Cordoba. The crowd was excellent as usual ;) My long time friend Facu Carri played impressive set of deep music at 119 BPM, following him made my musical journey on the night natural and effortless.

'Oh man, I’ve got good news all around! First of all, even if there wasn’t anything to celebrate, this mix from Heathered Pearls is absolutely superb! Almost two hours in length it navigates many favorite genres and artists represented by the Michigan based label, Ghostly International. Just look at this amazing tracklist! In 2009, Ghostly celebrated its 10 year anniversary as a label, with many shows across the globe. This year, the label is commemorating a decade of performances at Decibel Festival. The 10th Ghostly showcase at Decibel will feature live performances from Dauwd, Beacon, Lusine and Shigeto (Friday, September 27th at the Crocodile) and you know that I’ll be there all night!

Meanwhile, Jakub Alexander (that’s Heathered Pearls), a curator of the ISO50 blog and founder of Moodgadget Records, has just released a digital remix album, titled Loyal Reworks, featuring many great artists, including Sun Glitters, loscil, Markus Guentner and Lawrence. Volcanic Tongue is overjoyed to present a career-spanning slew of exclusive unreleased tracks, out-takes and oddities from Richard Youngs, compiled by Neil Campbell from his legendary ‘suitcase’ archive. Featuring tracks specifically re-worked for VT by Richard, Neil’s Picks present a jaw-dropping overview of the breadth of the Youngs project. Particular moments of note include the appearance of his long-rumoured British Telecom commission for their Openline launch, 1979 (!) group recordings that vision The Shadow Ring play Public Image, an extract from his unreleased solo treated violin album, the beautiful “Harpenden Idyll”, appearances by Edward Youngs, Madeleine Hynes and Basque avantist Ricardo Ibarruri and a ton more. So dig in! Big thanks to both Neil and Richard for their realisation of what has been a long-term Volcanic Tongue dream.

Martin Wheeler returns to Soma Quality Recording with Electrospective, the 4th album under his Vector Lovers guise. Martin’s past long players, the self-titled Vector Lovers, Capsule For One and Afterglow, won fans the world over with his unsettlingly emotive strain of electronic funk. In Electrospective, the highlights from these three albums and corresponding singles are remastered, with 2 previously unreleased tracks joining them. Beyond going back to his original productions Electrospective album, Martin has also been working on his iPhone app, which is due for release in early 2011. Such is the quality of Vector Lovers sound that his productions have been picked up by several world-leading automotive brands, most notably BMW who jumped at Tokyo Glitterati for the soundtrack to their 3 Series ads. 
His futuristic take on Electronica immediately pricks the ears and burns a lasting mark in your head. Vector Lovers’ sound emanates from the 80’s, and is influenced by Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and early synth pop.

For Meka and Lizzie, in celebration of their wedding, with love.

The greatest gift I can offer: an obsessively-compiled selection of finely blended music. Tunes that soundtracked our glory days of tearing up the streets of London and ricocheting through festivals, an unstoppable train of reckless carnage, hedonistic abandon, and Buckfast. Simpler times - i.e. the days before Meka wore makeup.

In my nostalgic curation I've leaned more towards our more innocent years of bands, house music and simple misadventures, with later forays into Berlin and Bangface (and the boundaries of reality) left to the imagination and some darker mixtape.

So more of a present for Meks than Lizzie then, because who cares about a bunch of gurning boys listening to electro 10 years ago. But Lizzie can use this mix to better understand her new husband, and also to dance for 4 hours.

Thanks to Cain, John, and Will for helping compile the tracklisting - music from a milestone era of extreme behavior and roguish antics. 

And thanks to Meka for introducing me to some of the best friends I could ever hope for, and to Lizzie for marrying one of them.

With ‘Wordplay for Working Bees’ Lucy creates a blueprint, not just the departure point for the full length format according to Stroboscopic Artefacts, but he also lays down new possibilities for the techno album. Refusing the obvious 4/4 route, Lucy traverses the widest possibilities of electronic music. ‘Wordplay for Working Bees’ encompasses IDM that leans towards drone, puckering, dub-filled techno and ambient in its most oblique forms. The beloved character of Lucy’s DJ sets, the way he layers tracks to find unique timbre and tone, is reflected in his studio approach. Lucy’s debut album results in the most delicate and delicious juxtapositions, as the unexplained and unexpected tangle together in the ear.

The search for hybrid structures begins with ‘Thear’. Through Stockhausen’s words Lucy hints at a manifesto: Whenever we hear sounds we are changed, no longer the same. The record is textured with riddling vocals –be it the slither of a UN summit speech to heard on ‘Eon’ or the wisps of Le Corbusier on ‘Gas’— and none are used with idle intent. Just as on ‘Eis’, where the samples appear to be engaged in discussion but the thread of their argument is lost in the granular synthesis, the tracks are abstracted enough to provoke your own interpretations and critical judgements. The vocals’ inclusion gives rise to questions, and the ambiguity of ‘Wordplay for Working Bees’ creates an architecture that facilitates debate.
It’s not just escapist or hedonistic dance music, but a concerted, dissonant effort to challenge the listener’s preconceptions. David Toop’s Sinister Resonances can certainly be heard.

This mood of provocation with no certain resolutions is a fitting description of ‘Es’. It’s a track with a long half life; it resonates, poised and pertinent. ‘Es’, the German for ‘it’, is an apt title for the indescribable mood where the ecstatic meets the melancholic. It’s hard to know what this ‘it’ is, but ‘Es’ transposes it perfectly.
Amid these ambient, dubby tracks it’s rare and also somehow exotic when the 4/4 techno of ‘Bein’ does emerge. Equally ‘Torul’, which sounds as if it samples the swinging of a meat hook, has the potential to be devastating on a big sound system. To close the record ‘Ter’, with its pattering percussive-line full of hypnotic persistence, is a stunning ending. It seems to be the sound of melting ballerinas.

As a body of work it’s cohesive and impressive, a result of Lucy’s process. With the release of the very first vinyl on Stroboscopic Artefacts he began laying down the inital sounds for the album. Over the label’s first year he worked across all eleven tracks. In a way the record charts the development of his sound and the
strengthening identity of his record label. It’s certainly not a portrait of the artist, it’s a landscape. Composed as it is of field recordings from parks, streets and Lucy’s apartment, it’s difficult not to see this as --at least in part-- a depiction of Berlin. ‘Wordplay for Working Bees’ is certainly influenced by the sounds coming from
Berlin’s clubs, galleries and forgotten pockets. Lucy holds a mirror up to the Hauptstadt, only to distort and redefine its reflection. The abstraction and processing of the album’s subject matter has a painterly quality and it’s evident that in creating ‘Wordplay for Working Bees’ Lucy slaved with technology to master it so brilliantly.
