This is me warming up the room... thus is why you’ll hear me play long drawn out tracks & some throwbacks in the first 25 or so minutes. I wanted to set a sensual, warm, welcoming tone for the rest of the night. 

I saved all the bangers for when the floor was starting to get packed. Funny enough my recorder’s battery died after the Hex Hector Whitney Houston remix I played. There is another 32 minutes of the set lost to our memories, but the recorder’s timing literally makes my intuition tingle. Maybe we did conjure and dance with the most legendary of angels that night.

Let me set the scene:

This set was my last live performance of 2021. This set in the main room of the Knockdown Center (my first time playing that side of things) was my victory lap on my home turf. Many shows in town had cancelled that night because of the endless virus surges, but some of us really needed this. So I showed up to play my part. 

After a year like 2021, when my DJ career snapped back like a rubber band and picked me up out of very pessimistic place, I needed this.

I am so grateful that I got to play this show with Ash Lauryn and Honey Diijon. Two djs I really admire and look up to! 

Ash said something to me back stage that illuminated how legendary this lineup was simply because of who we are: 3 generations of black women DJ’s carrying a very holy torch of love, light, & musical legacy by way of house music. :')

Taking the prompt from Allies in Arts’ mission to support artists who are: BIPOC, women, and/or a part of the LGBTQ+ community, DJs Dee Diggs and Lunàtica curated a 2 part mixtape to remind us that Pride never ends. This mix tape outlines the sounds that fill our queer imaginations, pulling from old and new source material. So grateful for this opportunity and hope you enjoy the mixtape!

 Here's something to mark 2022, to archive where I'm at on this hybrid- digital meets vinyl sound journey. 

Sometimes you listen to the recording and it reveals you had a real squeeze on the room and the vibes reflected are a pleasant surprise. As always listening back was a reckoning with my fIaws forcing me to deep listen and switch on some self acceptance til my mistakes become poetic mishaps meant to coax the message thru. I was touched seeing the divine feminine magnetizing in my sound and bringing the gurlz to the front of the dancing crowd at the Great Northern in San Francisco where this was recorded live - post-thanksgiving weekend in Nov 2022. Jazzy, sexy, manic, strange, grown, and very much me. Enjoy it!

~Reflections~

My favorite moments in the mix are when a sense of urgency to play around, to switch moods, to linger and lean into experiments,  all of it riles up and smooths out the beat connection again and again. Just like the oceans tide, it comes in swells of beautiful music and risky stitching of all the messages together. It's not perfect, but I am living in these songs for this moment. Washing them through my being and my perspective, that's the fun part and the part I feel the deepest, that somehow I'm bringing this music to life through appreciation and reverence. 

Giving you something new at the end. The culmination of all the inspiration - when new meets old music in perfect harmony - I am in awe that these hands are the channel for this risky jazz but kno she must keep twisting the knobs and sonically pushing to channel more light to this world, as God herself intend.

Nowadays Nonstop Dec 2024 Closing set

On EP 17 of the Here&There podcast, I am in conversation with Dee Diggs (House of Diggs, NYC).

Dee Diggs is a DJ and recording artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She is unapologetically black, queer, and a lifelong student of the tenets of House Music.

In her current iteration, she is a recording artist and a busy touring International DJ taking her sound around the world to clubs, festivals and events where the word has gotten out about how every single set by this connoisseur feels like a celebration – a celebration of club culture, of queerness, of community, of house and techno, and of house and techno’s Black American innovators.

Diggs’ sound cuts an arch through dance music’s past and present to convey an interesting melding of Dee’s signature sounds: lyrical storied tracks, sensual club edits, soulful realness, sneaky grooves, passionate thumpers, and nostalgic endings. The east coast darling bares her soul on these decks — when you hear her, you feel her, and there is no mistaking the beauty and grit of this sound and this feeling!

I am so excited to be hosting her in ATL on 3/15/25 and am even more excited to have gotten the chance to sit down with her prior to the event to hear her story!

EP 17 | Dee Diggs (House of Diggs, NYC)

We made time… we made magic… This is what I sounded like at the Majestic Stage at Making time Festival in Philadelphia, PA during late September 2024. 

A couple days before my 30th birthday, my twenties came to an end after that weekend. This decade of my life took me from traveling across town from my college apartment in Boston to play basement raves all the way to the club and festival stages of the whole wide world. :''} I spent the weekend how I spent my 20's: DJing, dancing, smoking ouid, chatting it up and realizing just how much life and kinship my love of music has given to me. The bravery to take up space that it instilled in me is the ultimate gift. 

I planned a special mostly all vinyl set to play for this one because I owe it all to the music. I remember as soon as I could drive leaving high school on my lunch break  to  look through dusty bins at Papa Jazz records store in South Carolina.  I didn’t know what I was looking for in those dusty bins until it found me: house music, the connections of soul, jazz, RnB, and the real feeling type of music my gay and black ancestors planted seeds and reflections in for me. 

I got to play that last 20-something DJ set on maestro DJ and house music godfather, Theo Parrish’s custom rotary ISONOE mixer. 

Every DJ before him touched those knobs, but when it was my turn it became a Divinely Feminine rotation, a ritual of sound and spirit, sweeping synths and crackling of the record dust mimicking the planes flying over head, where my hands were thrown up in ecstatic motion at times, there was a synergy that could not be explained. It was a beautiful day.

I felt good about this energy work. I felt good lighting the incense. It felt good fulfilling my purpose, praise and worship, a musical acknowledgement of the source energy that flows and unites all things.

 I’m blessed to act as conduit when I’m tapped into the gift of persuasion of melodies and moods. I am charged by the power of the elements especially when I am playing in the outdoors like I was this day.

I pray many more birthdays come to find me doing what I love, what I was made to do, making a joyful noise as loud as they will let me and shining this light, my spark - this black magic woman starlight-  for all to see(and hear).

Based in Brooklyn, Diggs is a DJ, producer and curator whose work foregrounds the Black and queer roots of dance music. Her sets balance emotional depth and rhythmic precision, drawing from a wide palette while maintaining a strong sense of narrative. First emerging through New York’s queer party circuit, she’s since built an international profile through thoughtful mixes for platforms like Honcho and Dekmantel, as well as her own event series, House of Diggs. With each project, Diggs makes clear that dance music is both personal archive and political practice.

Thru sound I lose my metaphorical restraints and commit myself to a sonic landscape, not absent of outside influence, yet deeply seeped in my references & love of history & hunger for myths of parties I never went to. I live to uncover and share these temporal moments locked in recordings of music magic taken place before I was born. I fall strongly in favor of sounds that are a reflection of my mood in the moment. {there is a song tracking every feeling & thought} I practice alchemy mono to stereo seducing the collective 'we' into movement & memories & emotions.
