Originally inspired by the music electrifying Detroit’s airwaves, Jason Kendig has been collecting and mixing a broad range of dance music for well over two decades. From his first residency at Detroit’s infamous club Motor in the late 90's he went on to become an integral member of San Francisco's Honey Soundsystem and a resident at Smart Bar in Chicago. Kendig's touring schedule has brought him to dance floors around the globe where he never fails to make others move through his ability to reference dance music's past while keeping an ear tuned to the sound of the future.

Después de mudarse de Chicago a Berlín en 2016, Jacob ha estado produciendo y alentando algunos de los eventos queer más queridos de su ciudad adoptiva, particularmente Buttons @radio-buttons y el Whole Festival. For the 39th entry in the Fun Fun Mix series, we present dj Jacob Meehan, delivering this amazing mix recorded live at Zenner Club in Berlin on New Year's Day 2023. After relocating from Chicago to Berlin in 2016, Jacob has instigated some of his adopted city's most beloved queer events, particularly Buttons @radio-buttons and WHOLE Festival. His multitudinous background with cultural production - hosting community radio, managing neighborhood restaurants, operating a contemporary art gallery, selling records at a legendary record shop, leading guided meditation sessions, & throwing disco parties in a gay porn theater - inform his attention to detail for the experiential & ephemeral, proving that creativity is everywhere. The downtime of the pandemic afforded Meehan the opportunity to dive further into music production; expect new releases from him in 2023!

He graced our booth at the IsBurning x Dekmantel SXSW showcase last year and he has been a key figure in Texas’s developing underground dance scene for the last ten years where he integrated activism with electronic music.

About his favourite track in the mix:
"One track that I am excited to include in the mix is Luca Lozano's "No Rewinds".  It has a mellow feel but actually is in a similar BPM to the other tracks I was considering. The delicate, emotive pianos and heavy bass create this beautiful tension.  It was a fun challenge figuring out how to place a more contemplative track in the middle of these rude and euphoric bangers."

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I’m a DJ, a black queer woman, and a music lover. My DJ bio central theme is ‘a selectress with no inhibitions’ because if a song makes me feel something specific then I will play it for other people to see if it elicits the same feeling in them. I seek to keep everything I do playful yet intentional.

Q. How long have you been involved in the NY music scene?
A. I’ve been performing in NYC as a DJ since the spring of 2018 and moved here in the fall of that year. So it’s been 1 year and 9 months of being based here. I always had a hunch I’d enjoy living in Brooklyn and I do.

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. This mix has a lot of nostalgic sounds and emotional vocal tracks on it.  It’s a very warm and personal mix. It’s a mix of voices and sounds for those who find themselves feeling lonely or trapped during this quarantine. This is the kind of music I would play for me and a good friend chilling at my home: tribal rhythms, soundscapes, 90’s boom bap, funk, and tributes to legends like Pharoah Sanders & Manu Dibango. I feel it conjures up a very groovy loving place to go to in your mind. Somewhere you can set your worries down & boogie.

Thru sound I lose my metaphorical restraints and commit myself to a sonic landscape, not absent of outside influence, yet deeply seeped in my references & love of history & hunger for myths of parties I never went to. I live to uncover and share these temporal moments locked in recordings of music magic taken place before I was born. I fall strongly in favor of sounds that are a reflection of my mood in the moment. {there is a song tracking every feeling & thought} I practice alchemy mono to stereo seducing the collective 'we' into movement & memories & emotions.
