We're back for our April 2021 session with our first show since Groove City Radio began broadcasting live throughout Glasgow on 88.6FM
To celebrate, we've got 2 special guests.

For the first hour we've got Dubrovnik (UK) with his deep and dubby trademark sound.

Dubrovnik (UK) is a subSine resident and a past student of the subSine Academy.

He has recently put together some guest mixes for the Recorder Series and more recently Greyscale, the label where he also released his Planetary Soul EP last year.

We'll be hearing from Dubrovnik (UK) telling us a bit about his mix, and what he has been working on in the studio lately.

Up on hour 2 our guest is a serial producer of quality techno, and one of the leading figures in the Icelandic contemporary techno scene - Ohm.

Having released records on many quality labels such as Thule, AE Recordings, Taped Artefact, Solid Groove, Kontakt Records and more recently on his very own OHM Series, we're looking forward to a deep journey through electronics!

Germany's DJ bwin returns to First Second Label with a sub heavy offering of experimentational dubstep, bass, techno and trap for the dark smoke filled room in your brain. Moritz Paul aka Leibniz and Alex Hoppe aka CIO known for their label Hundert (alongside Felix Paul) have been pushing the boundaries of experimental bass, breaks, techno and dub and Cell Phone pushes their sound even further. Accompanied by a blissed out vibration filled remix from Berlin residing Cork born power house ELLLL this puts the icing on the cake for this already wobble heavy 12". The artwork, a combination of photography, paint and textiles is an extract from a cloth print by Irish artist and designer Shauna McGowan.

The first release from Markham Road comes in the form of a VA spined by frequent collaborators of its sister platform Infame Radio (@infameradio).

The nine tracks vary along a scale of percussive rhythms both relating to established and experimental ideas. As a trial in itself, this project took shape through exponential conversations between all those creatively involved.

"After releasing my album this year, I’ve been exploring experimental sounds using modular and vocals. When Dani approached me to be a part of this release alongside other incredible artists, I was eager to contribute an energetic club track. I’ve had the bassline and vocal idea in my mind for some time now and I set out to bring it to life using my arsenal of grooveboxes, modular synths, analog effects and a mixer. It took me few sessions to fine-tune the balances and dynamics, as I was determined to create a track that could be pitched, allowing people to choose their desired tempo." — Warzou

Simon Hafner aka Sun People is well known to fans of fast tempos, having released music on labels such as @exitrecords @rua_sound and @through_these_eyes. Hafner presents a wide range of music and guest mixes on his monthly Sub FM radio show and is also releasing music and doing A&R for the label @defrostatica.

His latest cassette on the Guides label, titled Joyful Discontent, is a tribute to minimalism, referencing the works of Frank Bretschneider and Mark Fell. The starting point for this release was a JMT VDR-1 drum synthesizer, characterised by its intuitive aspects, its limited sonic capacities and the challenge to stretch the machine's possibilities. This one instrument informs the structure of the album, fixed in tempo, track and total length. Reducing his tools to a bare minimum, Hafner explicitly refers to specific genre traditions inherent in this radical form. Structurally and sonically, the spirit of clicks & cuts (e.g., Komet’s ‘Rausch’) can be heard, as well as influences from dub, ambient and minimalist drum&bass and footwork.

In his thinking, however, Hafner goes further. The idea of interlocking all the pieces, complementing the overall grid of constraints, provides the frame for a playful exploration. The result was also fuelled by intuitiveaction, such as when a single gesture and decision changes the direction of a process that takes place in real time. When composing, despite the track’s live act structure, he produced recordings that could function as parts of a jigsaw puzzle that can berearranged freely in any order, thus opening the way for a reinterpretation of the whole. This is also why the album will be available in two versions, both as a mix of combined tracks, and as eight individual pieces that make up the whole.

Despite so many formal constraints, Joyful Discontent still sounds accessible. The pieces produced by Hafner move in the direction of Mark Fell’s compositional approaches, where music is devoid of evoking emotion, rather, aiming for a neutral and non-imposing environment for the listener.

Croatian dj/producer Iggy Dope launched his record label with a versatile V/A compilation featuring 8th international and inter-generational talents from different corners of the genre spectrum and scenes (Italy, USA, Austria, Germany, UK).

The inaugural compilation by Etherwerkz is packed with high-vibrational bass-heavy club music from friends and faves, setting the tone for the Etherwerkz genre-free sound and vision, from etherial experiments heard in the intro by Weightausend, peak time tech-uk funky by Xen Chron, hi-tek hood electro from Soular-Dj Phiene and User Delusion, through bass bangers from Toupaz and Lindenberg Support wrapping it up with 160 bpm tekkerz by Johnny Megabyte and Dj Balance.

We’d never met the guys but have long been big fans of their music and they were due to play our party back in May, which didn’t go ahead for obvious reasons. We were really looking forward to rearranging the gig post-Covid when we heard the news. A big thank you to Rob for arranging this, and Alec for putting together a very special podcast.
