The DifferentSound Podcast #284 welcomes Sunil Sharpe! Sunil Sharpe is one of techno's true people. Known primarily for his fast-moving, skilful style and dynamic selections on the decks, Sunil has carved out a unique place in the global scene, representing electronic music in a range of different ways over the years - as a DJ, producer, label owner, party organiser, radio host, writer, educator and nightlife advocate. Sunil's reputation as a "turntable wizard" is long established from his early days as a DJ in Dublin (when local competition was fierce and word of mouth meant everything). Next up comes a long-time torchbearer of the Naples techno scene. Gaetano Parisio first came to attention under the pseudonym Gaetek, and released a string of records on labels like Planet Rhythm and Primate Recordings that quickly found their way into the collections of esteemed selectors like Dave Clarke and Jeff Mills. That was the 90s, and as the new millennium broke he donned his own name and funnelled his creative energies into releasing record upon record under several (of his own) manifestations of imprint: CONFORM the first, followed by ART (Advanced Techno Research), SOUTHSOUL and ADAGIO. With his trusty three/four-turntable, two-mixer set-up he kept up a regular touring schedule and authored many memorable nights, pushing a syncretic brand of Techno that took influence from the wealth of peers around him. Ultimately, the pace of output and the demands of DJ life were anything but light, and so it was that 2007 put a pause to his activity. But after a ten year break he moved to Barcelona, set up a new studio and has been cooking up his usual frenzied productions since. Much as before, his gritty, unfettered loops wear the unmistakable guise of his earlier CONFORM releases, and carry a sheer momentum that’s a surefire bet til the end of the night, if not much longer. Bassiani Podcast 207 is a window onto Gaetano’s vision; circling basslines that charge headlong with no hesitation, pure, driving techno, recorded live at Kvanchi’s Curated by Resident night on the Bassiani floor back in January.

In over a quarter century, Fuse has stood the test of time by rooting itself in ageless music and employing pioneering artists - large or small, international or local - to command the decks of Belgium’s longest running dance floor. A celebration of this legacy and the renewed imprint is in order, coming in the form of a 30 track compilation of techno’s best and brightest from around the world. One track for one year, this collection of recordings highlights the status quo of enduring club music, beginning with a nod to the past: a re-release of Jeff Mills iconic ‘Step to Enchantment’ from 1993. This glance to the past quickly shoots us forward into the current state of techno with legendary artists like Planetary Assault Systems, DVS1, Steffi, Rødhåd, Donato Dozzy, DJ Nobu and many others who headlined the club in recent years. Cementing itself as a respected escapist institution, Fuse also calls on its growing local scene to prove why Brussels continues to remain a reference in the scene even outside of its own borders. 

An ode to the past and a hint to the future, Fuse shares this milestone with its original guests from 1994 all the way to its fresh party goers of the past years as a promise to keep its dance floor focused on quality music and timeless moments.

Mario started his music career in his hometown of Zagreb, Croatia as a techno DJ in 1998. After making a big impression playing a few small venues he soon got invitations to play at bigger ones where he demonstrated that his technical skills and musical taste were rapidly expanding. He quickly built up a dedicated following and earned recognition as one of the most talented and gifted young DJ’s working in Zagreb at this time. In the period from 2000 to 2005, he was a resident DJ in 2 of the most popular clubs in Zagreb; Club The Best and OTV dom, but the highlight of his career was at the Perfection venue, lead by respected DJ and producer Petar Dundov. Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Sven Vath, Chris Liebing, Claude Young, are just a few of the celebrated DJ’s that have played at Perfection. In this 5 year period Mario has played on more then 300 parties all over Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Czech Republic alongside with the likes of Dave Clarke, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Chris Liebing, Ben Sims, Speedy J and many more. In 2005, his life drastically changed after moving to Ireland. His music career as a working DJ has been put on hold, but his love and passion for music has become even bigger. He currently spends most of his free time at home behind the decks and is working hard at developing and perfecting his skills of music production. Initially playing just techno, his musical taste has expanded to genres like tech-house, house, booty house, ghettotech, electro, rock and odd visits to some other genres.
