Gerra & Stone - Dispatch LTD K-Mag studio mix - 05.08.2013

Fabric asked Headz label manager Ant TC1 to put together a promo mix ahead of a Metalheadz session in room 2 at the London venue on the 16th of August 2013.  It's mixed using 80/90% vinyl and some newer unreleased material off CDR's.

The mix is almost 2 hours long and one that takes a trip right back to early releases on the seminal label since it's early inception within the realms of Breakbeat / Jungle / Drum & Bass (going back 20 years) right up to the labels current and forthcoming releases.  Hope you enjoy.

Well the time is now, and we are all his prey. Going in for the kill with his Program debut, the London-based artist has made his move with precision instinct, leaping on us with two rich, rampant rollers just when we least expect it. 

Inherently underground and immaculately timeless, both ‘Scrummage’ and ‘Nanite’ purr with intricate production prowess. Late night vibes for drum & bass connoisseurs, they carry the hallmarks longevity, offering something new on every listen. 

‘Scrummage’ leads. Opening with crisp, cold atmospheric subtleties, a waspish bassline zips its way into the mix by way of crafty LFO. Fluctuating with angular attitude, the bassline soon becomes the main melody, pinging us back and forth with gritty cheekiness. As we roll deeper into the mix, we’re introduced to haunted one-shot human elements and a wealth of sub bass that underpins the whole composition. Vicious without the shoutiness; like the genuine tough guys who never even have to raise their voice, ‘Scrummage’ is 100 per cent killer. 

The icy vibe continues on ‘Nanite’. Sharp, stark and steppy, this one’s home to yet more creamy sub bass and pensive, synapse-snapping kicks, conjuring up memories of the mid-to-late 90s when drum & bass was really finding its own identity. Boasting a truly menacing vocal sample, the track title might have connotations of a sweet night’s sleep but the overall message is clear: don’t have nightmares. 

Two killer workouts, one unmissable label debut. Once again, it’s time to get with the Program!

This was an unreleased track from 1998, it got lost amongst other work but revived from a 10" dubplate, it was called 'Can U Read?' on my plate because people used to come up and try and read the names of tunes on my plates when I DJ'ed so I thought I would have some fun and it ended up being the only name it ever got. Was finally released on the Virus Vaults CD in 2005 and is available to buy from Beatport.

Started out with a vocal sample from Girls Aloud - What You Crying For.

 I used Trillian for the reese bass and the drums are made up from a number of old skool breaks (amen, sport, funky drummer etc), the sub was made on logics exs24. And various fx/sweeps/risers were added.

The whole track was arranged mixed and mastered in Logic Pro 9, 
the track is available for free DL (due to blatant sample ) enjoy........:)

"He is best known for his work with Ed Rush, fellow head of the Virus Recordings label, and as a pioneer of the techstep and neurofunk sound. His first single for Metalheadz, 'To Shape the Future'/'Raging Calm' (1997) and his collaborative material with Ed Rush, such as the Wormhole, album (1998) were archetypal developments in the style. The duo followed this debut album with The Creeps (2000) and The Original Doctor Shade (2003), as well as countless singles and remixes. More recently, the duo have returned to form with their (2009) LP 'Travel The Galaxy' containing the modern classic 'Chubrub' and 'No Cure' LP in 2015."
