Took an old piece - is is music? Well, I came to “music” from a reverse angle. I was a spoken word radio producer in the 80’s, then got attracted to audio art, moved to Europe, tried installations, and found myself in the experimental music world. So this piece is from about ten years ago, and has been rejigged by me. I did it simply, using Ableton but not enhancing with synth.  Next time.

For our first mix of the year, we have Calgary-based Drum & Bass DJ and promoter, Swayze, who truly embodies the collective and cultural spirit of the genre. Representing Sub Chakra, a collective engaged in spreading soundsystem culture, Swayze is an incredibly important cog of Calgary's thriving Drum & Bass scene.

When asked to deliver a mix for Unchained, Swayze dug deep into his influences that originally got him to love the genre.

"This mix was created with a few things in mind for myself, for one keeping it true to the sounds I love and the ones that originally got me into drum & bass. The softer lighter sounds but with those heavy rollers also."

Unchained Mix Series 066 - Swayze

We wrote the track in a rental cabin out in the countryside. Mikk had always wanted to make a track with a similar drumwork to Bad Company's 'Sentient,' so that's what we started with. As sound engineering requires a lot of mental effort, we had some chocolate lying around to keep us going. By the end of the day, most of the track was finished. We just needed to let it ferment overnight and see what we thought in the morning. When we returned to the makeshift studio the next day, we noticed that someone had nibbled away half of the chocolate. Rats. After that, the tone of the track switched a bit, and coming up with the name was simple.
