Over Ya Head

Bonaca, aka Petar Suskic, is honoring us with a Full Premiere of his debut EP on Cohesive records.
This young Deep House producer is one of the many proofs of what Croatia and other countries alike have to give to electronic music, as the creative scene there is definitely growing bigger every day, one can tell.

“Bonaca” has a profound meaning : It refers to when the sea is calm and looks like oil, a situation that happens mostly at sunset. This sets the tone for what his musical universe inspires.

Starting as an electric guitarist in his early years, Petar started attending to rave parties at the age of 12, in famous techno venues in Croatia like Fort Bourguignon. He soon developed a strong taste for electronic music, first influenced by progressive house, then more recently by producers like Kant, Larse, German Brigante, Coyu, Marc Romboy, Stephan Bodzin, and Steyoyoke movement.

A few years ago he was turned into music production by his friend Vedran Stojanac (Welldone / Duplo Project) who was producing House and Tech-House tracks. After 3 years, he mastered music production enough to gain confidence and experience, and define his style more sharply. After issuing a few Indie Dance Tracks as part of Time4Tale duo on Family Grooves and Ready Mix Records in early 2014, his recent solo project “Bonaca” is more deep house focused, leading to his Debut EP “Spoiled Roots” (Out on Cohesive Records 4th May 2015)

The title may be a reference to the situation of leaving one’s roots behind to make a better living, as Bonaca is now based in Sweden. The track is very progressive, with a hypnotic circling lead melody that implies a permanent sense of movement. While listening to the song we can easily imagine a fugitive running away without ever turning back. Acoustic elements like picked guitar introduced later in the song give it some smoothness and a breath a humanely touch into the melody, with tripping minor scales, all along with funky licks to keep the pace and power. This gives a great overall balance to the track, making it very suitable for any quality Deep House DJ Set or Podcast.

Bonaca performs at events organized by Parnas events and will soon deliver his second EP that is in the process of being signed on a Label that will be announced very shortly in the next few weeks.

“The Words” is our first new song of 2016. We were messing around in the studio and came up with this hybrid, disco-folk track. It’s written from the perspective of a boyfriend or girlfriend who just needs to hear that they’re still wanted. We really liked that the lyric “Just say the words” kind of also sounds like “Je sais the words.” “Je sais” means “I know” in French.

Renowned as one of his country’s most respected purveyors of quality-fuelled house and techno, Alexander Malyutin aka Spieltape, is a man on the rise. A native of Arkhangelsk, Russia, he started his career back in 2005, with his early tracks perking the ears of none other than owners of Global Underground, who immediately snapped him up for their scene-shaping label.

The intervening years have proved just as fruitful, as Spieltape has turned in cuts for the likes of Sasse’s Moodmusic, Kruse & Nuernberg’s Save Room, Acumen’s Time Has Changed, Solee’s Parquet Recordings as well as the mighty Get Physical Music. Added to all this is the not-so-small matter of Alexander’s very own label, Highway Records, which he co-runs with compatriot, Mike Spirit. Partly responsible for ushering in a whole new era of Russian electronic music fans, the label’s agenda spans far and wide — a fact that’s indicative of a roster that’s includes the likes of Adriatique, Alex Niggemann, Hector, Gui Boratto and Gorge over the years.

And it’s far from just the aforementioned names that can get down with Spieltape’s grooves. Indeed, many of his tracks have picked up plaudits from some of the scene’s most reputable international names, with Richie Hawtin, John Digweed, Jamie Jones, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Marco Carola, Joris Voorn, M.A.N.D.Y., Hot Since 82, Lee Burridge, Luca Bacchetti, DJ T., Audiojack, Eats Everything, Subb-an, Pleasurekraft among those who’ve voiced their approval.

Further proof of the man’s production appeal lies in the fact that both Nick Warren and Luca Bacchetti have included his music on their compilations, with Spieltape’s tracks playing pertinent roles in both Balance 018 and Arkitekt 02 respectively.

In 2015 Spieltape remixed the classic track “Sunset (Bird of Prey)” by none other that Fatboy Slim for a special 15th anniversary edition of his platinum album “Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars”.

In addition to his production credits, Spieltape is also a relentlessly busy touring DJ. A star-turn at Red Bull Music Academy’s ‘Bass Camp’, he’s also plied his trade at the likes of the legendary Kazantip Festival and the Sochi Winter Music Conference. Some of the scene’s most respected clubs have come under his spell too, with Arma 17 and Propaganda in Moscow, Suicide Circus in Berlin, Supermarket in Zurich, and Volar in Hong Kong all getting the Spieltape treatment. With his best days ahead of him, these are heady times indeed for one of Russia’s most talented electronic music artists.

An iconic figure in the dance music industry, Dousk's "French Sauce feat. eSoreni" was another example of the Greek producer's skill and craft. Proton Music now returns to the title track with remixes from Belarus and the Netherlands.

Belarusian, Mikhail Akulich, has been at the forefront of his country's music scene for over five years with his Michael A moniker and his unique blend of "progressive house and techno, with a minimalist slant". Founder of the rapidly growing, Genesis Music, Akulich has used the label to showcase his own work while attracting a host of star names. A prolific artist, Michael A has over 600 production credits to his name for the likes of Superordinate Music, Balkan Connection and Particles. An established contributor to Proton Music, four original EPs have graced the label's catalogues in a short 12-month period with March 2018's "Aura Tears" showcasing a maturing talent through an EP of the highest quality. A single reworking of Luc Angenehm's "Kaiserkraft" in April 2017 demonstrated impressive remix skills as Michael A returns to Proton with a distinctive and typically impressive interpretation of "French Sauce". A dynamic, floor-filling offering, a fizzing shaker-fuelled percussion line comes immediately to the fore as Dousk's lead motif ripples across the mid-range in hypnotic splendour; the original's vocal sample also prevalent. Evolving smoothly, a new arpeggio lead emerges, coruscating in simple patterns while further melodic tropes present themselves in brilliant fashion atop a dominant, club-oriented beat. The result is a wonderful interpretation, full of craft and musical sensibility.

Hailing from a country with a rich heritage in the dance music industry, Dutch producer, Niels Schilder, has been a revelation with his Malbetrieb production soubriquet. A practician of "deep, groovy house and techno with an innovative progressive flair", Schilder has helped develop his country's underground dance movement through his co-founding of the Klopfgeist label and "Club Paradigm", Groningen. A production career that began in early 2009 has blossomed into a century of production credits for some of the finest modern imprints that includes Uone's BEEF Records, Dave Seaman's Selador and BOg's ATLANT Recordings. Moreover, 2015's eleven-track album, "Life in the Clouds", for his own Klopfgeist, marked another high-point in the Malbetrieb production portfolio. Making his Proton Music debut, the Malbetrieb remix of "French Sauce" is a wonderfully crafted piece that delights with head-shaking percussive groove and intelligent use of original components. Building hypnotically, Dousk's vocal sample features behind strong rhythmic components as a collage of melodic motifs – central to the original – pitch and bend in a richly-layered breakdown before they are reprised in the third movement atop the infectious groove and a host of additional production material.

A pair of remixes from and Michael A and Malbetrieb ensure Dousk's "French Sauce" is still the perfect topping.
