Our 23rd podcast comes from the iconic founder of the multifaceted Deep Space Helsinki project, Samulli Kemppi who headlined room 2 at Corsica Studios for us back in December 2016. What can we say… Kemppi was a standout artist for us from the year. His extensive knowledge and experience across both production and DJ’ing shone through that night, together with his unshakeable love for what he does. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to bring you this vinyl only podcast (including track listing) from Kemppi which perfectly captures the essence of what he delivered that night: deep and atmospheric, whilst carrying with it the character he is known for. Alex Stein is a true Brazilian (São Paulo) homegrown artist that has his roots all the way from the old continent, his German background -he even has the German citizenship- compelled him day by day to work harder & harder to achieve his unique electronic sound, from an early age he knew this was the way to go. The ‘Bavarian-Brazilian’ has made his own way thru vast musical studies (including Audio Engineering, studied at the SAE Institute in Frankfurt), and much trial & error he got to where he is now. One of the most well-known and revered artists of the new Brazilian techno / techno-house scene. Also worldwide. Whether as a DJ or producer.

His greatest commitment and passion has always been electronic music. Quite clear now. That he represents with all honors the new generation of Brazilian artists, too. Alex Stein begins to be in everyone’s ear beyond his South American borders, not in vain he just released “Aurora” on Suara (highly respected label where Coyu is the head-honcho) as well as “The Challenger & Escape” on the Ukrainian imprint Dear Deer (alongside K.A.L.I.L.) and “Tribute / Cruise Control” with Spuri) via Sincopat… previously in Bunny Tiger, Great Stuff Recordings, ​Herzblut, Tronic, etc. In all those cases he has surpassed all expectations in critical and sales.

It seems he will follow the same footsteps of his friend, fellow of profession and countryman Victor Ruiz. Who is unstoppable publishing on labels such as Senso Sounds, Octopus, Terminal M and of course, Suara. At the same time, he has accumulated an incredible legion of followers, not only in his home nation Brazil, but throughout the world thanks to performances in Canada, South Africa, Australia, and of course the main European capitals. By the way, like Victor, Alex usually spend some time throughout the year in Berlin, the ever-glowing German capital, a perfect place to continue evolving on his greatest passion: techno.

BLOCKCAST #011 - JC Laurent

Anastasia Kristensen (@anastasiakristensen) first caught our attention around two years ago, and we’ve been waiting for the chance to bring her to Farringdon ever since. The young Danish DJ had as big a year as any breaking techno artist gets in 2017, appearing at respected places like Berghain and Unsound for the first time in between regular dates at her adopted Copenhagen home, Culture Box.

The recent surge in interest surrounding Kristensen isn’t without good reason. Her record collection has the suggestibility of an artist with an experience spanning decades rather than years, covering classic 90s-era Warp through to recent Houndstooth or Ostgut Ton. When she plays out she’ll make the jump between these usually disparate sounds within a few records, building sets that are as unpredictable as they are intense and encompassing. It’s how she’s played in her promo mix for us, which has only added to our excitement for her first appearance with us on 24th February.

PULSEWIDTHMOD’s menacing mechanized drum beats, coupled with pleasingly disorienting melodies, leaves the listener with a sense of urgency. She is known in her hometown of Baltimore for
being vocal against the abuse of power which gives her sound a sense of tension that’s energizing in nature. Her live performances offer an energetic listen for those seeking a visceral dance experience.

In 2005 she started on her musical journey by moving to Philadelphia to build a studio of her own and hone in her craft; it wasn’t until she moved back to her hometown of Baltimore that she was
invited to play a show in 2014. Ever since then, she’s been exploring making improvisational dance music. In 2015 she was given an award by the Baltimore City Paper for her album #fearwillkeepthelocalsystemsinline as “Soundtrack to the Revolution”. It was her response to the police brutality that was present before and especially during the Baltimore Uprising.

This live PA of SAMULI KEMPPI was recorded live @ Suicide Circus on the 4th of january, 2013.

The room is hot, hot, hotter than Hell. People are sweating and  condensed liquid runs down the walls. It looks like a nasty plumbing  problem, but it smells salty. Like an animal. A live one, not one that  has been salted. As we move towards the back of the room, we come upon a  fog bank. It‘s fine, like gauze, but it‘s there. As you approach it, the  hair on your sweaty forearm stands on end. The DJ booth has its own  microclimate, several dozen degrees colder than the dance floor.   SAMULI KEMPPI is one of the key figures of modern techno scene. Hard working producer and DJ who is always breaking boundaries and delivering  fresh mixture of times past and days yet to come. Samuli has released  music on high profile labels such as Mote-Evolver, Komisch, Time to  Express and Ostgut Ton since 2002 under different names and pseudonyms.  Samuli and his long time friend Juho Kusti just launched their own label Deep Space Helsinki as an extension to their radio show and parties.  First release, Signal One EP, came out in July 2012. DSH002 is scheduled  for January 2013.   Past few years have been very successful for Samuli and he has played  in Tresor, Bunker NYC, Arma, Cocorico, Berghain and many other hot  techno spots around the world. Lot's of remixes and releases scheduled  for 2013 should keep the man busy.
