The latest Deep Mind Music mix is a special one put together by Thailand's Sunju Hargun, as all tracks in the mix are his own productions from his Extans Mantra series. I've been a fan of Sunju's incredible Siamese Twins label since it began, and his prescient talent as a DJ, curator and producer makes him someone I'm very inspired by, and grateful to know.

This mix is a deeply healing and meditative journey, which takes the listener through immersive drones, twinkling acoustics and hazy, mystical pads, as Sunju envelops us in his sonic world. As the mix unfolds, a soft sunset slips into a warming indigo darkness, descending gently into the infinite depths of inner consciousness. There, we are washed by gentle waves of hypnagogic resonance, allowing us to enter a state of reflective peace, before fluttering arps and sunlit motes bring us to the outer world again. Sunju's emotional sensitivity in programming this mix shines through, and it feels particularly personal that he also made all of the deeply moving music in this mix.

— Artist Intro —

London-based Ario is a practitioner of deep and inquisitive music both as a DJ and curator of his label Astral Industries. 
Although his remit falls within the deeper shades of electronic music, his overall aesthetic draws on a broader spectrum that prizes the synthesis of both instrumental and electronic disciplines. 
Depending on context, he traverses the lines and forms between the ambient and techno worlds. What is common in each, however, is his alchemic handling of rich organicism mixed with darker, more austere sounds. 
Speaking with an emotive sensitivity, there is a certain self-awareness that permeates his crafted soundscapes, which are as much drone inspired as they are psychedelic and nature-driven.

I'm George Silver (André Neves) musician and creator, from Barreiro Portugal.

q. is there a story behind the mix?
This mix is made entirely with my own music, through projects like Barata Cósmica, Lunnar Lhamas, Mayor of Vilnius, etc.

q. describe a favourite object in your living room...
My favourite object of the living room is a combination of my record player, because listening to music in a comfortable zone is an old habit.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
I'm always creating new projects, recently finishing my new album, and working on new ways of making live music.

I'm happy to finally share this journey, streamed on Radio Raheem during the latest UNIT episode.

For this one i decided, instead of mixing in the ‘classic way’, to create a sonic environment of more than 40 tracks; warping, ripping, and drawing details and frequencies from each one of them, creating 30 minutes of submerging sounds flow + one final credits track.

It’s probably one of my personal favorite works/experimentation i've ever done; sooo hope you'll enjoy it as i did while working on it.

A session with experimental sound and  soundscaping ambient music. A unique session to be enjoyed 

About:
Nies is the creative alias of Denise Pakes, the founder of the Rotate imprint and co-founder of the Rings of Neptune agency & kōrero. Originally from the Netherlands, Denise can be found juggling between Paris and Berlin, engaged continuously in musical exploration, audio-visual collaborations with like-minded artists, and organizing events with cultural activation in mind.

After studying ‘Image & Sound’ in the Art Academy & Conservatory of The Hague, Denise became increasingly interested in the ever-expanding audio-visual universe and its peculiarities. Persistently curious and relentlessly passionate in video, photography, and music, she found the natural outlets for her artistic expression, which led her to create her label and agency, explore the art of DJing, and produce both video and music. At the moment she’s following a master’s study at INA GRM in Paris.

Since falling in love with synthesizers a few years ago, music creation is now one of her main creative outputs and an infinite source for inspiration and joy. Warm soundscapes, strange textures, subtle atmospheres, and broad bass lines — her musical intentions either as a DJ or as a music producer are clear: to excite the listeners through an excellent curation of tracks, flowing organically, stretching time and bending space in pure harmony.

//What are some major influences for you?

My major influences are soul, funk, jazz, experimental electronics, avant-garde, ambient, soundscapes, spoken word and dub combined with deep house music.

//What was your first vinyl you ever bought and where did you buy it?

My first record was a 7 inch from Mistral called starship 109, from 1979.A band from my hometown Den Haag, I was looking for it in a 2nd hand record store in Den Haag and while I was talking to the seller about it I was scrolling with my fingers through a box with records, I picked out a record randomly and it was this record. A happy accident :) I wanted to have this track so badly because it's from my birth year and a band from my hometown, it's cheesy but I love it. It's definitely a rare 7 inch.

//What was your most embarrassing moment mixing?

Hahaha, my beginners moment, hearing the track you want to mix in play on your headphones, mix sounds good, thinking you put the slider up and then there's the silence... ;)

The concept I had in mind for this mix was loose at the beginning. I wanted to create something that was happy, uplifting and melodic, as opposed to anything dark during these already dark times (and it’s very easy for me to go that way) I ended up turning to a lot of 90’s (and new but 90’s influenced) music, a couple of classics and reissues, and found myself dreaming of new worlds - that era of music had the most amazing power to transport you for some reason. 

The mix starts off with Ambient, but quickly moves into more dub, uptempo, breaks, beats and full-on Trance... Those of you who know me well, know I love Trance music and surprisingly this is the first time I’ve managed to sneak it into an ASIP mix.

I saw this mix as a route to escapism, a look out of the window, and a journey that just goes up and up.
