From the new Icelandic label that brought us Atli Örvarsson, Sin Fang, Christopher Royal King & Nico Rosenberg, comes a new composer, hailing from Naarm (Melbourne). As a professional concert pianist, Rose Riebl has captived the audience from around the world with her performances which include her own compositions. Her musical work "extends her intimate relationship with the piano into a realm of more fragile, soulful and transcendent works that guide the listener into vulnerable emotional spaces," and when you play through the previously released two singles, you'll know that these words ring true. Now that she's been signed to INNI, Riebl is preparing for her debut album of compositions, titled Do Not Move Stones, due out on June 18th. Meanwhile, I am here today to tease you with a beautiful piece borrowed from her album, titled "Even As The Light Fades". Here, the sparkling piano keys, weaving in the plush bed of organic reverb, carry and lift the soaring strings into a poignant dance, that is at once a little melancholic and triumphant in its song. Echoes of romantic classical composers, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Chopin, return in ghostly melodies that pluck at the emotions in your heart, recalling false memories of the past lives, when sitting in a concert hall was enough to be transformed with only music.

“I think sometimes people forget to feel, or it’s easier not to,” she told classical and new music magazine CutCommon. “So, I like my music to elicit some kind of emotional response. Sometimes, that’s just rest or calm; other times, it’s more intense – there’s fury, rage, longing. We all walk around carrying these things, and if music can act as a bridge back to feeling, allowing us to access those dormant parts of our own little universes, then it’s doing what it’s meant to. I think art wants to wake people up.”

Italian electronic music producer, Andrea Mangia, started off his career as Populous back in 2002 with Morr Music. I remember catching a few of his tunes on the debut, titled Quipo. Returning to the same meditative atmospheres, fueled by ambient textures and punchy rhythmic beats, Mangia paints a soundscape of beautifully produced sonic pastures, ones where the sun rays brush a bathing childhood memory, full of floating clouds and enormous space. Names like Tycho, Christian Löffler, Sun Glitters, Helios, and, of course, Boards of Canada, float to the top of my virtual catalogue, as I prepare a mental playlist where I would feature tracks by Populous alongside that feel-good, hypnotic, music that lifts and cradles the soul. On his new record for the Italian La Tempesta Dischi imprint, Mangia explores the feelings of “floating over a calm and mysterious Mediterranean sea” through the concept of Stasi (which means ‘stasis’ in English) – the slowing down of the current insanity surrounding us in the everyday world. It is through this moment of much-needed reflection that we can recover and finally see clearly again, like through the muddy running waters which need a pause to settle down, so that they could be transparent again. Today I’m premiering the opening track from the album, “Orizzonti bagnati dell’Adriatico,” which, with the help of Google I’ve roughly translated to “shimmering horizons of the Adriatic” [feel free to provide me with a better translation].

“Orizzonti bagnati dell’Adriatico” is a clear tribute to “Prati bagnati del Monte Analogo” which is an extraordinary album by Roul Lovisoni and Francesco Messina, produced by the great maestro Franco battiato. I wanted to transfer those suggestions of quietness and transparency in my native area, that is the south coast of the Adriatic sea, where gorgeous suggestive colors can be seen in the horizon between sky and sea."

An ardent moulder of sound, John Lemke began carving out a very unique music blend on his debut album 'People Do' (2013) and its follow up EP 'Walizka' (2014). Informed by his work as a sound designer & composer for documentary films and his natural inclination towards fusing rhythm with rich textures and emotive melodies, he set out on a musical path that had been long in the making and is ever evolving.

The quest for unusual, inspiring sound sources has always been at the heart of John's process, however the genesis of his second album 'Nomad Frequencies' was rooted in much more inadvertent circumstances. In the summer of 2014, forced to indefinitely evacuate his Glasgow flat and studio due to structural damage from one hour to the next, with nothing more than a laptop and a bag of clothes, John embarked on a six month odyssey of soul searching, couch surfing and spending an extended period of time in his old hometown of Berlin for the first time in years - it was to be an odyssey that would help ferment and distill the ideas of his second album on which work had just begun. 

A year of particular global turmoil and upheaval, combined with John's personal, albeit very minor, 'displacement', caused a lot of questioning, frustration and anger, which somehow found its way onto the new material: a more confrontational, at times aggressive sound, paired on the other hand with a yearning for harmony, balance and space. Other influences came less from the world of music, but rather in visual form, through the densely textural art of Anselm Kiefer and the political, yet poetic musings of film maker Adam Curtis.

Intent on refining his sound toward a more minimal, bolder style, John set out to limit his sonic palate to a handful of carefully chosen elements. At the centre of this new direction remains the muted piano already introduced on his debut, but in a much more purified and raw form. This organic base is adorned by the warm fuzzing and wavering of analogue synthesisers, tape echoes, meditative tuning forks, field recordings from John's 'exile' period and percussion based on his rigid approach to sampling, which started developing on 'Walizka'. The guiding principle of his orthodox style of recording and sampling is to only use home-made sounds by utilising his own field recordings, applying contact microphones or hydrophones to objects and instruments, running them through different kinds of speakers and re-recording the sounds to arrive at a 'lived in' quality, often misunderstood as plainly 'lo-fi'. Touches of viola and woodwinds parts (Kim Moore of WOLF and Andrew Baker respectively) provide melody fragments and subtle details throughout the journey.

With John's healthy disregard for genre boundaries, the array of influences on 'Nomad Frequencies' is vast, but never over-powering. From the meditative tuning fork that starts proceedings on 'Of Elsewhere', the dub echoes to the hints of minimalism, free jazz explosions to the Lynchian atmospherics, all elements serve nothing more than the album's narrative journey between friction and harmony, best appreciated in its entirety. A rhythmic backbone collides with rich ambience and melody, often infectious and jarring at the same time, forging a soulful whole which most likely only reveals its true self after multiple spins.

Being a work about a man and his music, the choice for a film score is carefully made, not just by the composers, but by the producers who chose to invite Hodge and Kirmann into their very personal work - British-Tunisian filmmaker Claire Belhassine’s feature The Man Behind The Microphone revolves around her discovery in her 30s that it is her grandfather, Heidi Jouini, who is a worshipped superstar in her home country, known as the "Frank Sinatra of Tunisia". Headphone Commute, in partnership with 1631 Recordings, on which this OST will be released, is proud to premiere the opening track.

Deep In Mind is a duo from Greece composing psychedelic chill out music with ethnic elements. Their sound consists of Synthesizers, found sound and various instruments.
They were formed in 2010 by Bjorn Alpha on electronics, music production and Marios Podaras, multi- instrumentalist with main focus on the Violin.
Since 2011 they have been releasing music with different labels as well as performing in Festivals and playing gigs in various types of events and spaces around Europe.
