"We randomly stumbled across the vocal on our studio computer, which we'd recorded years ago and were immediately drawn to how powerful the lyrics were. Turning it into a more robotic sound instantly made it feel more clubby to us, so we knew which direction we wanted to take the track. We really enjoy pairing dark and moody lyrics with music that still has a sense of euphoria and energy about it.

Adam Beyer’s Drumcode juggernaut attracts more fans and critical plaudits with each passing year. Holding firm on its future facing ethos, techno’s number one label presents a new volume in its acclaimed A-Sides series with 20 prime tracks to signify its 20th anniversary. 

Such is the volume of quality music Adam Beyer receives throughout the course of the year, releasing all of it would be impossible. Enter the blue chip A-Sides series: a chance for the quality-obsessive label head to issue a collection of outstanding tracks that couldn’t fit in their regular EP release schedule. 

With an eye on future talent, as much as the label’s established roster of heavy-hitters, the compilation showcases the full breadth of Drumcode’s multifaceted techno sound, equal parts inspiring and functional. 

Led by the stealth techno funk of ‘Nine of You’, Beyer’s deft collaboration with Mark Reeve, the compilation takes in exciting highlights from big guns such as Alan Fitzpatrick, Dustin Zahn, Bart Skils, Pleasurekraft, Luca Agnelli, Jay Lumen, Kaiserdisco and Gary Beck. 

The rich vein of form displayed by emerging techno talent is similarly given prime position. Rising DJ/producer Boxia makes his Drumcode debut, fresh from a well-received warm up set for the crew at the hugely successful Junction 2 festival in London, while the likes of Enrico Sangiuliano, Juan Sanchez, Ian O’Donovan and Timmo also drop fire, establishing their credentials as some of the most promising talent breaking through the ranks in 2016. 

Reinforcing the global scope of the label, artists such as The Junkies from Toronto and Layton Giordani from New York, prove techno is winning a place in the heart of the new generation of artists coming out of North America.

<p>Effenem return to phobiq with a full release, presenting four slices of futuristic Techno. The stomping title track kicks things off, boasting looped-out vocals and the most menacing of stabs. &#8220;Nyx&#8221; continues in the same vein, relying heavily on the riffs and acting as the perfect precursor to &#8220;Nortia&#8221; where we are treated to haunting synths but with a more stripped-down approach. Closing up, &#8220;Phyxis&#8221; pushes the melodic overtones even further, with sneaky electronics interlaced throughout the clever arrangement.</p>

Since arriving on the UK underground scene in 2014 with a bang, Bristol-based GotSome, aka Adam Gorsky has clocked up a slew of bass-heavy, dance floor destroyers including ‘Bassline’, championed by Radio 1’s B.Traits and Annie Mac, and signed to Defected Records with a huge package of remixes from house legend Kenny Dope, Friend Within, Chus + Ceballos and Chocolate Puma. Boasting releases on Chase & Status’ MTA Records, Monki’s Zoo Records and UKF’s ‘Bass House’ compilation, as well as remixes for a plethora of big name talent including Basement Jaxx, Róisín Murphy  and Craig David, GotSome is showing no sign of slowing down.

Following mammoth sets at Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party and Hideout Festival in Croatia, GotSome is ready to get back to his roots on the club circuit showcasing fresh music. As Adam says himself, “nothing beats playing out in the club!”

We kick off this year with a new EP from Milio, the solo project of Emiel van den Dungen, who is also one half of Tunnelvisions. Here focusing more on lush synth sounds, he offers a pair of deep and meditative tracks that journey through the cosmos and come with original artwork from Nous Couteaux.

Milio has a fine collection of hardware at home including a Moog Grandmother, Jupiter 8, OB-6, sh101, and more. He often likes to switch on his machines, step into a different world and jam when he is experiencing what he calls 'afterglow' - that feeling you get from a flashback to a club experience that leaves you happy, peaceful and inspired. The artist often sets up in the Willem Twee Studios in his hometown of Den Bosch, which is filled with tape machines that he likes to use to add warmth to his music. He's an artist who becomes at one with sound thanks to his hardware based, hands on approach to production, and that shows here.

Opener 'Moment of Truth' quickly establishes a nice rubbery rhythm that locks you in. Bubbling melodies drift up top like tasing clouds while a melodic bassline rides up and down the sale to add to the subtle and supple sense of movement. It makes for a beautiful and hypnotic listen that is always evolving. The excellent 'Never Say Never' is a little less restrained, with crisp and driving drums making you move while all manner of synths bubble and gurgle away. Miniature melodic explosions light up the skies and keep you on edge while hints of acid appear from below to keep things engaging from start to finish.

These are two carefully crafted, long form grooves that are as cerebral as they are physical.
