Robert Charlebois’ musical world is an incredible source of treasures, in several genres, throughout the course of a career that has reached the half-century mark. Any good vinyl hunter on the planet knows the value and importance of Charlebois. His name is circulating among record collectors, and his music jumps from generation to generation, country to country, in the most natural way. Let us state the obvious: the raw energy found in his music has not been altered in the slightest by the passage of time.

Music lovers under 40 have discovered Charlebois by going through their parents’ vinyl collections. Used LPs, scratched and dusty, holding true gems that begged to come out and play. Back then, Charlebois was bringing a new sound to Quebec, an evolution, but he also introduced a look, an influential style.

Until now, Robert Charlebois’ oeuvre had never been the subject of a rereading/remixing project. This year, his 50th anniversary in show business, provided a good opportunity to invite a new generation of musicians to dig deeper into the grooves Charlebois has laid down. Though the techniques and instruments used to write and treat music have changed, the goal remains the same: to surprise, to develop new ideas, to push back the limits of form and content, to broaden the sound spectrum.

The idea of a remix album came from Montreal-based musician/producer/artistic director/DJ Poirier. The project eventually got set in motion, and Poirier took its helm as artistic director and executive producer. He also applied his magic to a handful of tracks. The concept was to sample Charlebois’ songs directly, without access to their individual tracks – to draw from the raw material and go straight to the heart of the matter. The results: fat dirty funk, round beats, and psychedelic flights seen under a new light. The sunnier side of Charlebois’ music is also represented along the way through nods to Latin, reggae, and calypso music.
