Unfolding its 394th saga, MoBlack Records alights in Gauteng catching on to up and coming
South African artist KingDonna as he envisages vast pastures through “The Cow Song” and
frolics in its aural space as he goes right along. Through a delicate interplay of tribal music
elements and subtle electronic maneuvering, the immersive 8:35 minute “Song” celebrates the
fine yet complex and often subjective line between exterior and within, resounding the subject
while manifesting the context and senses that shape its form. A careful build up zooms in and
out as indistinct vocals detract focus, leading to an emotionally provoking climax that breaks but
ultimately makes the track with redeeming piano chords. MBR394th’s length works to its favor
as its inquisitive and at times anxious start fulfills its arc in buoyant musing throughout the latter
half. Passed the 6 minute mark, KingDonna pursues a more optimistic approach, bestrewing
percussion into melody to make the daydream more tangible, and though “The Cow Song” may
seem to come to an abrupt and unwelcome end, it comes to remind that the sun only sets, to
rise again.

Lazarusman has made a huge name for himself in the last couple of years with vocal features for Stimming, Jonas Rathmans, Joris Voorn and Huxley among others, quickly becoming one of the most recognizable voices of modern House Music with his slam poetry style. Here he is with a solo release. Are you excited? We certainly are. ‘The Signal’ is a song, or rather a musical poem about courtship in 2020. In his inimitable, contemplatative style, the young South African recounts the voice messages of a man to a woman after their first meeting. It is about infatuation, insecurity, the desire for a soul mate, shyness, wondering… and those blue ticks. The EP features ‘The Signal’ in three versions. Lazarusman’s original presents this lyrical piece of art on a deep, yet bouncing instrumental. With crisp drumming and an emotional synth melody, it works equally well for attentive listening as well as for dancing - if they let you. Both remixes here are by Jullian Gomes. His first version amps up the energy levels with heavier kicks and quick percussions but keeps the deepness with atmospheric, syncopated chords and far-away pads. Adding layers throughout, this remix is quite a ride. Jullian’s Vox Dub gets down to business in a straight, driving fashion, reducing the vocals to their very essence and letting the drum machines rock out, while still offering up a bed of floating harmonies for Lazarusman’s emotional words.

A proponent of innovation, Afro house pioneer MoBlack Records takes the genre to greater
lengths, handing the stage over to Maputo-born DJ/Producer Double Drop to extract from his
Mozambican roots and furnish two deep-seated but forward-thinking tracks, bolstered by
Myrandza’s earth-powered vocal prowess. A mosaic of vibrant, high powered tessera of sounds,
‘Mutaxo’ revs MBR398 engine buoyantly, incorporating traditional Mozambican rhythms and
Portuguese folk into Afro House for a sultry Marrabenta-infused dancefloor experience.
Meanwhile, ‘Avano’ on B-side drifts and flutters over the soul of South Mozambique in chase of
Amapiano vibrations. Bristly percussion unlock the gateway into this dreamy promenade
suffused with soothing ambient vibes, airy synths, South African rhythms, fleeting piano
melodies and unique vocal modulations.

For the 9 years celebration, Plano B records organised their first remix contest with tracks by the house artists Steve Menta, Sonic Future, and Luis Leon & Art in Motion.                
From Mozambique, Africa, the duo Mapiko Mweya turned the electronica breakbeat into a super organic modern Afro jam with field recording elements, real instruments, analog synths, and a modular system, a pure bliss of creativity.

The release comes with 3 very different musical flavours: a powerful Afro House vibe dipped in melancholy from New York’s Doug Gomez; a stellar, soulful House outing from Italy’s up and coming talent Paul Adam; and an upbeat, piano-driven House groove from Wheeler himself.

Wheeler del Torro is a producer, musician and DJ originally from Cuba. He has been working in the industry for the past 15 years, promoting and DJing at parties throughout the United States and Europe. He is often referred to as Tony Humphries’s musical protégé and is one of the founders of the Cultural Detectives – a historical art experiment, bringing unheard poems and stories of slaves to life by combining them with modern music. 2020 saw Wheeler launch his own label, Dog Day Recordings, an outlet for quality Soulful and Afro House talent from across the globe. Dog Day’s first 3 releases feature New York based vocal talent Sidney Washington in 'If Only You Could See Me’, 'Voce e Linda’ and ‘I Want To Try Again’ ft Nuzu Deep, with remixes on the label from Coflo, Doug Gomez and FNX Omar.
