Digging early 90s progressive records and genre-curious excursions into all forms of groove, US-born, Berlin-based Solalex (@solalexdj) plays a sound inspired by the queer-futurist revolutionary spirit of underground raves.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jordan in Berlin a few weeks back. The scene really needs more DJ's like him - all about the music, making connections with likemind people and an advocate for the healing powers of dancing. Very glad to have him onboard!

"During the last six months I have found a beautiful community of queer friends and allies, and I’ve never before in my life felt more supported to be my full self. 

The mix explores the feelings during that time period. It’s bursting with euphoria. It’s a club ready fire starter.

Guest mix #129 || Solalex for Deeprhythms

Exploring early 90s progressive sounds and venturing into genre-spanning grooves, @solalexdj, a US native now residing in Berlin, crafts a sound that draws inspiration from the revolutionary spirit of underground raves with a queer-futurist twist. Together with DJ Chichi, Solalex is the creative force behind 'Starseeds' an event series in Berlin set to debut on December 16th at Zur Klappe. 'Starseeds' seamlessly melds cosmic and organic elements within welcoming, queer-friendly spaces, providing an opportunity for people to connect and find healing through the universal language of dance.

'Reflecting on the injustice of war, I began the mix with a few tracks that I first discovered digging Ukrainian techno labels at the time of the invasion. Recorded during the solar eclipse - which coincided with the bombardment of Gaza - the mix begins in darkness and evolves into a hypnotic humanist meditation. Mid-way through, the transformative symbol of the eclipse is represented by hi-NRG progressive with solar references in the track titles. The mix ends with a hopeful dream of another world to be possible. Thank you to Bliss Inc. and the guys at Hâws and space·lab for the unreleased bits'

Delighted to welcome Thaïs and Solalex back! Talented, curious, passionate, and hard-working DJs. On the one hand, an atmospheric hour, taking its time to set things down. Both hazy and captivating, deep dubstep and d&b rhythms set the tone. Sunnier fields gradually open up, allowing percussion, dub pads and sober harmonies to emerge.
On the other hand, a smoothly paced mix that meticulously explores various forms of electronic music from downtempo to liquid, before venturing into more unrestrained territory with progressive house, goa techno and trance.

Nr. 20 is a spicy party recipe 🌶️ Solalex took his groovy Y2K tribal tech records and some new stuff out for us and they make a hot mix, which we love! Digging early 90s progressive records and genre-curious excursions into all forms of groove, Solalex plays a sound inspired by the queer-futurist revolutionary spirit of underground raves. 

An advocate for the healing power of dance, Solalex blends cosmic, emotional, progressive trance with new age, world influence, organic instrumentation and percussion to cosmically align dancers with the stars and the earth. As a gemini and a bisexual man, he experiments with dualities by blurring the lines between genres to shine a light on #bivisibility in the scene and create space for all to dance freely.

US-born, Berlin-based Solalex co-hosts Starseeds with DJ Chichi, a party melding cosmic and earthly rhythms in queer friendly spaces in Berlin. On May 5th, Starseeds will host a Sunday afternoon party at Fitzroy in collaboration with London’s Fast & Bi-Furious collective, featuring Pjenné and Hanaby along with the residents of each collective.

If you're plugged into the London music scene, chances are you've crossed paths with Matt Cowell. Since landing in London, he's been collaborating with key events and labels like Ransom Note, Optick, Viscera and Not An Animal. 

At Ransom Note, Matt is instrumental in curating the residency at The Social, which has hosted legends like Optimo and emerging acts like Baba Ali. Beyond the club booth his radio projects — "Too Hot To Sleep" on Radio Vilnius and shows with Ransom Note on Kiosk and Netil Radio — showcase his knack for eclectic, boundary-pushing selections.

The mix Matt recorded is an excellent showcase of his ability to create unforgettable dance floor moments that are as diverse as they are thrilling.

Guest mix #143 || Matt Cowell for Deeprhythms

For the first edition of the aspects, a mix accompanying Starseeds -- Berlin party melding cosmic and earthly rhythms -- we're presenting a live set from your Starseeds co-hosts DJ Chichi and Solalex. Recorded as the extended closing set of Confusion Festival during the summer of 2024. It begins under moody rain clouds gathering on the horizon which briefly interrupts the set (comment if you can spot where). As the rain clouds part and the sun rises, DJ Chichi and Solalex traverse the range of sounds and emotions inspiring the curation of their eclectic Starseeds lineups.

There’s something uniquely grounding about a conversation with someone like Enzio Etchaberri. The type of person who finds joy in the act of digging, discovering, and sharing music with the world. As a DJ, music producer, and programmer for one of Berlin’s most iconic clubs Enzio carries a deep respect for the roots of electronic dance music. All the while keeping an eye on its evolving future. Whether locked in his Lichtenberg studio or playing in the thick of Berlin’s nightlife his approach feels thoughtful, deliberate, and intensely human.

Thinking back to a fall morning last year in Sisyphos’ Wintergarten I can’t help but smile. It was one of those often times rare instances when everything – the music, the colors, the energy – came together to remind you why we gather in these spaces. No phones, no rush.

It’s those moments that Enzio seems to understand so well, and it’s exactly why I’m excited to share this conversation and the his wonderful mix with to you, our listeners!

"So the mix, can you tell us a little something about that? 

Lately, I’ve been drawn to rolling tech-house from the ‘90s and early 2000s. There’s something about the way they lock into a groove that somehow feels timeless. So there’s a few records with that theme in the mix along with more house and melodic-heavy cuts.

I really enjoy the dynamic and contrast blending genres and old & new tracks to create these shifts in energy with a sense of push and pull. Around 29mins in you can hear an upcoming release of mine 🙂 "

Anna Kohlin has been shaping Stockholm’s underground from the inside. A long-time fixture behind decks and party lineups she sure knows how to read a room and flip it.

Her sets splice 90s house, tech-house, and breaks with newer oddities. Her approach is as precise as it's loose but never too clean. Expect gear shifts not gradients.

If you’ve danced at Stockholm venues such as Under Bron, NEU or anywhere slightly off-grid, you’ve likely caught her in her element.

As a producer, she’s released on Slump Recordings, Dirty Hands, KMA60, and Makemake Tapes. Her label, Inside Out, leans on the sound of the underground with cuts from Basement Space, Baby Rollén, Eric OS and herself.

His musical outcomes offer multiple perspectives of his universe, combining a love for soulful dance music with the raw Amsterdam aesthetic. Masalo’s dj sets are proof of this mentality, unearthing unfamiliar sounds and combining them with records that could be seen as modern-day successors. This approach is also translated in his production art. Productions as ‘Testify’, ‘Red Light’ and his remix on Grammy-nominated artist Bassekou Kouyaté’s ‘Jama Ko’, has stirred up the dance music community worldwide. Masalo’s creations are also favoured by Rush Hour Records.

Together with Kamma, Masalo runs the dance party series Brighter Days, a colourful get-together celebrating dance music culture to the fullest. Artists as Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, Hunee, Kuniyuki, Osunlade, Ge-ology and many more have rocked these parties. With class-act performances at clubs such as Contact Tokyo and Djoon Paris and festivals such as Liverpool Disco Festival and Dimensions, Masalo is vastly continuing to inspire dance music culture around the world.

His music is a mixture of his influences, centered on textured and hypnotic rhythms that transport the listener to another dimension, starting from deep techno to move freely between different subgenres. He is endowed with an eclectic style dedicated to the creation of sound journeys with particular attention to live improvisation. He has released music on Hypnus Records, Annulled Music, Oslated and other underground label. Recently founded his own ELLE label, focused only on recorded live tracks.

I had been always thinking about what would happen if something went wrong at a psychedelic festival and the party was over - now I got the answer:

___The convergence of the tribe___

However, Panama authorities closed hundreds of people in quarantine, they didn’t serve nor food or drink to them.

It was the organisers of the festival who provided all of these even after the end of the official festival. Also, people started to become into volunteers to keep the site nice and clean as possible. 
People tried to stay positive, calm, they helped each other adopting to the given situation. 
Maybe this is the way how it should be done in the aggregate, too.

It has been obvious for long: we need to redefine our connection to the environment. But there are also several other things in which we can mature now. In this special situation everything is momentous and can have great effects. We are witnessing how the old world collapses and it can be painful. 
But it depends on us what will be the new world like.
