this is the first of several planned writings exploring my and others’ feelings, thoughts, and experiences relating to being immunocompromised and interested in nightlife. this piece is focused on my experiences and feelings of what nightlife offers me and what i lose out on by not being able to engage with it, whether in terms of extent or form of engagement. it’s just an opportunity to better understand what i’ve been going through and what i feel. some later pieces will be more focused on logical argumentation, maybe some interviews, maybe some experiences of trying to build something.

immunocompromised raver - post 1: my experience

Babypufff (Baltimore) headlined Dance Club on Saturday November 18 2023. Joyce Lim warmed up the room with the first 2.5 hours and Babypufff took the last 2.5. The party took place at the Owl Room in Washington DC. The weather was nice and the energy was sublime.

twofold is an industrial club music producer/DJ whose selections center around interrogating connections between regional, Black club sounds from the US, UK and Africa. Since 2022, their sets have brought a mass of liberating percussive energy to underground dance nights in Atlanta, blending favorite genres of the ‘00s and ‘10s with cutting-edge experimental sounds. 

Always moving with intention, twofold thrives on tracing paths through histories and geographies of dance music and finding new ways to re-center the dance floor. From blending Afro house and amapiano through UK garage and UK funky into ballroom house, Jersey club, footwork, and gqom, twofold harnesses rhythms that span across time and place; what emerges is raw movement, shifting in response to the crowd in real time. Their productions follow suit, colliding the progeny of these genres with the sound design languages of sci-fi cinema and triple-A video games and creating a new cultural context for both, in which the club is dramatically reconfigured into a site of sonic intervention.
