Xi'an-born and Toronto-based producer, pianist, and DJ Ciel steps up for the next Phonica Mix with a slow building club room warm up. With a selection of deep and chugging bass, house and techno this is a mix that equally see itself lending its ears to the home listener as well as the club dancefloor frequenters. Its this diverse sound that has seen Ciel take the helms of some of the greatest clubs, festivals, radio shows and podcasts as well as releasing solid records on labels like Mister Saturday Night, Peach Discs, Coastal Haze and more her sound is truly solidified through these outputs. We are delighted to have Ciel join us ahead of some of her amazing shows this year like Kala Festival & Multi Multi(Where we will also be hosting a 20 Years Of Phonica Stage). We had a chat with Ciel about the mix and about some of the releases she has coming up.

The Pittsburgh based, Chicago born and molded, T4T LUV NRG artist has become known for melding boundaries, often sifting between crates of house, techno, bass music, jungle, broken beat and everything esoteric that exists in between. They've brought this balanced approach to their sets at esteemed parties/festivals like No Way Back, Draaimolen Festival, and Freerotation with no intent to stop anytime soon. Via their involvement with T4T LUV NRG you can often catch them flanked by dear friends behind the decks, conjuring with labelmates Kiernan Laveaux, Russell E.L. Butler (as b2b duo Boyz II Them), Bored Lord, Eris drew and Octo Octa. Equipped with this wide ranging approach and the bonds of chosen family they push against preconceived notions of the craft, continually self overcoming to bring us something with tangible intent...

"I came into doing this pride mix with the intent of displaying my own personal joy as a non binary trans person. Every song picked is one that has lifted my spirit in some shape or form and I wanted to give that to my own this pride season. Pride for someone like me is often highlighted by isolation and a lack of desirability, so this mix is a gathering of gems that have battled against those feelings. It's also a collection of tracks that I've been listening to this Pride season in particular. A time that has been elevated by newfound love and a growing sense of finally finding somewhere to belong...enjoy!"

Ploy makes mad music – a lot of his music sounds mad. It shouldn’t necessarily make sense but it does.

The term discombobulated comes to mind at times but in the very best way. No, seriously we mean that as a compliment.

For many years Ploy has been one of the most interesting producers in underground Electronic music having released records with the likes of Hessle Audio, Hemlock, Timedance and L.I.E.S.

No two have sounded the same and each of them have drawn upon a musical influence or five as Ploy attempts to piece together his own flavour of dance. As an artist he has continued to evolve – creating his own world in which to release the music that feels right to him.

Ploy’s own record label, Deaf Test, has been integral in the evolution of his sound. Acting as a platform in which to experiment and explore new sounds and concepts.

One challenge of his career thus far has been working out a way to connect the dots between his own musical tastes, productions and outlook towards club culture. However, as of late his focus has been rooted in the wonkier undercurrents of UK Bass music and its intersection with Tech House. A new record on Timedance forthcoming cements this idea.

We invited Ploy to record a mix and the result… Well, you are in for a treat as we gain an insight into some of the music which makes Ploy tick on the dancefloor.
