There are few house music lovers out there that haven’t heard Juan Pachanga’s laid back delivery calling out a Latino love letter over the lilting, rolling drums of Brothers’ Vibe’s “El Baile” before. 

The classic deep house jam was huge in its original form when it landed on SOM Underground back in 2000, and then it went on to receive the remix treatment from artists as widely respected as 2000 & One and Christopher Groove. Aside from the official remixes, the likes of Luciano took the accapella for a ride and created infamous bootlegs that took the scene by storm, whether soundtracking an intimate club throwdown or a blissed-out Ibiza terrace moment. 

Now, more than fifteen years on from the original release, it’s time to revisit a stone cold classic and call in a fresh interpretation. Berlin-based Tony Lionni has already scored countless essential deep house releases for Freerange, Madhouse, Modelisme, Mule Musiq and Versatile amongst many others. His warm, slow-grooving approach suits the mood of Pachanga’s laconic vocal delivery perfectly, but behind the mellow veneer there’s a powerful, soundsystem-ready punch to the track that demonstrates why Lionni has risen to be such an in demand producer over the years. 

Lionni’s brand new mix of “El Baile” will be hitting vinyl with the vocal mix on one side and the instrumental on the other. To accompany the digital version of the new mixes, SOM will be including the original version from 2000, providing the perfect snapshot of where the track has travelled over time.

Initial tracking for Prince's original version took place on 8 July 1982 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (the day after Lady Cab Driver). Prince mixed the song further on 30 January 1986 at Sunset Sound (on the same day as mixing With You, Mia Bocca and G-Spot, and recording It's A Wonderful Day).
While David Z. and Jill Jones are listed as producers of the song, the only musicians known to have contributed to the track beyond Prince and Jill Jones is Clare Fischer's orchestra, hired by Prince./

Good news! We'll be releasing a beautiful LP from Unknown Mobile next month called Daucile Moon. 

Daucile Moon, which follows @unknown-mobile releases on No Bad Days, Normals Welcome and Young Adults, started four years ago in Vancouver when Levi Bruce was recovering from a broken toe and collecting MIDI files he found in an old geocities archive. It was finished earlier this year in Montreal with help from Mike Silver, AKA CFCF, who added plaintive guitar to complete the album's placid and stargazing style of ambient and downtempo music.

The album takes its name from an old, obscure Canadian jazz song that Bruce describes as "pretty but also with a serious amount of melancholy," which could also describe his new record. In the vein of Pacific Rhythm label-mate Khotin's standout New Tab album, Daucile Moon comprises drowsy beats and spaced-out loops, referencing the pinnacle of early '90s chillout and ambient while infusing it with the dazed sound of Canadian electronic music in the 2010s.

Bruce's process in making Daucile Moon was long but leisurely. He took the melodies from those MIDI files and moved them over to his analogue outboard setup and then back to his computer, creating a digital-analog hybrid that sounds as pleasantly worn as a dog-eared novel. Live instrumentation, like Silver's classical acoustic guitar stylings on "A Windless March Ouest," mingles with occasional dance music references like the subtle acid squelch of "Ravers Sojourn" or the hazy breakbeat of "Oenology."

The album was inspired by various happy memories, from sharing wine with friends ("Oenology") to a dog that Bruce met ("Simone Can't Swim"). The result is a patient and personal record that highlights the best qualities of Bruce's previous work as Unknown Mobile, with his distinct style of melody and soundscaping set free from kick drums and the dance floor. It's telling that Bruce originally sent the record, at first called Melancholic Songs For Dogs, to his parents and two grandmas—this is beautiful, relaxing music whose appeal is universal.

Daucile Moon will be released digitally across all platforms and on limited edition cassette tape available through our online store, Bandcamp, and Seance Centre on July 14, 2019.
