Origins Tapes 018 - Ian DPM

The third of Breaka’s self-releases sees collaborations between himself, known-associate Frazer Ray, and brother Bakey.
“Fun with a capital F is the theme of this EP. I selected these four with that in mind, each one also bringing a different flavour of the UK sound. ‘The Loudest Woiioii Ever’ and ‘Phone’s Ringin’ are the product of a few sessions that me and Frazer managed to squeeze in last year. We were hugely inspired by early dubstep, instrumental grime, and of course UK Funky.
For the flip, I thought it was high time to release some of me and my brother’s productions for the world to hear. ‘Club Dynamics’ takes things right up to 150bpm, and draws on Jungle and Juke influences. We round off the release with ‘Pro Perc', a UKG groover to vibe out to, named after the now closed drum shop on Kentish Town Road we’d visit as kids.“

Alicia Keys is one of the undisputed queens of contemporary R&B. Powerful vocals, earnest lyrics and a deep self-awareness are the main pillars that have held up her career. But what happens when you fuse ballads with basslines? For this vinyl-only co-release on Bristol imprints Eminent and Slippery Sounds, Knoxville’s Nikki Nair stands at the intersection between new and old and redefines exactly how to nail the bootleg edit.

‘If I Ain't Got You’ is a precise flurry of two-step garage and nostalgic vocals, Alicia’s lilting voice still recognisable despite the dancefloor environment. A glossy rhythm breathes life into the old classic so that it becomes a new entity, which somehow welds together the murky rave realm with the weightlessness of Summer. It’s rare for tracks to suit any given setting, but this one might just be a strong contender.
 
‘Show Me Love’ takes a more starry-eyed course, weaving dewy textures into a fresh whimsical appeal. There’s still a subtle nod to the past despite the more recent Alicia/Miguel sample, which comes in the form of the 2010’s grime era melodies and nostalgic soundscapes. The breakdown around the halfway mark is a particular treat; it hoists up the vocals in reverence before the first of two ice-cold, dubby drops.

They say that if you’re paying homage to one of the greats, you’ve got to do it right. But Nikki Nair goes above and beyond that into a captivating alternate reality where the rush the second time round is just as good. These bootlegs are instant classics in themselves.

“ SHOUTS was only ever intended to be a one-off project to celebrate 5 years of the label, but the process of hitting up artists we respect and admire to contribute a track to a compilation ended up being a game changer for us as a label. It turns out we have so much to shout about!

SHOUTS 2022 sees the label once again travelling across the world to find the most exciting sounds, integrating itself in the emerging soul and jazz scenes of Berlin with RS debuts from Yoofee of the Moses Yoofee trio, neo soul singer Noah Slee and hip hop downtempo jazz producer S.Fidelity. The compilation also welcomes several artists from across the Atlantic including but not limited James Bangura, the DC based producer part of the Black Rave Culture Collective whose dynamic percussion driven productions have taken him on tours across the world on tours through Japan and Europe. The UK offering see’s Cosmic Slop resident billy2chips step up to the plate alongside London based DJ and producer Manami who is fresh off her tour supporting the iconic Bicep alongside talented artist Toby Cato whose work and music may be coming through very soon..

“ Whilst a few tracks on this comp are the product of longer standing relationships ( Yak, Rejoicer, Natty Wylah, Athlete Whippet, Ian DPM, Sally C) big proportion of the tracks are the fruits of Rhythm Section’’s relatively new Label Team - consisting of Emily Hill as Label Manager and Label assistant Ayiesha Smith - who graduated from intern to full on employee this year.

This new blood is reflected in the increasingly diverse mix of selections for this year's SHOUTS, ranging from the “Ori” influenced soul of newcomer Akin Soul to JuJu Rogers’ new wave of Jazzy Hip Hop emanating from Emily's adopted City of Berlin. Long story short, this is a snapshot of where we are collectively at, where we are headed and what we want to shout about.

Taking a break from his work on songs by Young T & Bugsey, Sean Paul, Aitch, Stefflon Don, PA Salieu, P-rallel, Hagan, Anz & more, Sam Interface returns to his own solo project. ‘Just Having Fun’ EP brings the sort of energy that can be felt when in the midst of carnival, with its grimey basses and Trinidadian soca vocals creating an infectious sound for the club.

‘146’ is a continued lineage in Sam’s uptempo experiments, following on from the equally imaginatively named ‘145’ on Sams collaborative 3:33 EP with Ahadadream in 2020 + his monstrous banger ‘Underground’.

SPRAYBOX (Japan) was founded by Tokyo based producers Genick,

Proceedings start with an evening service, except the gospel choir have forgotten the keys to the church and instead take themselves and their organ down to the club for some heavenly amen breaks. The rest of the EP remains firmly on the dancefloor, but the club itself is launched into another dimension, powered by overcharged acid and off-kilter percussion riding over weighty, no-nonsense basslines.

What do clouds sound like? For 3024's first release of 2023, we are super proud to present an exploration of that question by the amazing Italian-Ivorian producer Ehua on her new EP.
"Clouds EP" consists of four sonically and energetically varied tracks inspired by the paradoxical nature of these mood-shifting objects, suspended in space. They can be heavy or light, menacing or comforting, distraught or at ease. They are still but in motion, they can cause fear and confusion or give you strength, awareness and empowerment. Ehua's music combines live handmade percussion and flutes (the ancient Duduk on Nefele and recorder on Vola) with fierce drum programming and synth work. This is music for the mind and the 'floor! A shrill repetitive noise roused them in the early hours of the morning - like an air raid siren it cut through everything. Where it came from they didn't know, as far as they were aware there was nobody around for miles and miles - this was the middle of nowhere. Sleep was impossible now, though tiredness gripped every inch of them, they couldn't drift off for fear of the unknown. By the window they sat, squinting in the darkness, listening out for something moving in the bushes, but nothing appeared before day broke - had they dreamed it all?

As one half of the brains behind Scuffed Recordings and the curator of Definite Party Material, Ian DPM knows a thing or two about what constitutes a banging tune. Making his first forays into production himself a few years back with his Visions EP on Scuffed, he's since released a bunch of other EPs that teeter on the fringes of club music, fusing the likes of UKG, breakbeat, dancehall and techno. His next release comes via London-based music platform turned label Mantissa and is charged up with all the sonics you'd expect from him; weighty basslines, frenetic rhythms and crisp breakbeats.

Attention all those in need of a UK funky fix – Tribal Brothers’ LR Groove is back on his own Renk Groove label with a five-track special poised to wreck the dance. The Cantankerous EP is headed up by ‘Nuclear’, a war dub built especially for a b2b DJ set featuring the mighty Troublesome shelling down in his inimitable toasting style. 

A dancehall MC who got his taste for the studio in Trinidad and in Jamaica, Troublesome found his voice working with the likes of Daddy Noddy in Brixton and has since gone on to a two-decade-deep career taking in garage and jungle as much as Jamaica-rooted sounds. LR first clocked him on a white label Huckleberry riddim back in 1999, and when an opportunity arose to have Troublesome throw down on one of his war dubs, he jumped at the chance – ‘Nuclear’ is the right word for the end result.  

As one half of Tribal Brothers, working with the likes of Scratcha DVA and DJ Polo and dropping the heat on labels like Livity Sound and Nervous Horizon, LR has more than proven his worth in recent years, but his legacy reaches back to the breakthrough years of UK garage. The decades of dedication shine through in the versatile club weapons he crafts on Cantankerous EP, where the foundation of sub bass and stripped-back, crooked grooves act as a springboard for the LR Groove sound. It’s a style which responds to the cross-pollination happening across UK club music, as the influence of amapiano, footwork, gqom and dancehall all feeds into a razor-sharp style steeped in flair, and there’s space for the drama of techno as much as UK funky’s upfront drops. From ‘Middle Finger’s teasing tension and epic synth sweeps to the raw bleeps and nagging drum pressure of ‘Clap Back’, this is an EP loaded with neck-snapping gear that sits comfortably across a whole range of scenes in the current UK club music climate.

From a fresh generation of producer without any blinders, this resident DJ from both Rinse France and Positive Education Festival, and audio alchemist acidobasic (fka Basic) is making his Global Warming debut with a dancefloor driven 2 tracker for stompy adventurers. 

Both immersed in a singular soundscape of bleepy synths, uncanny melodies and bass-loaded 4 to the floor kick drum, Baile & Tooping are the ideal soundtrack to both a peak time carnival street party, or a game of Mario Kart on acid. In both cases, designed to be played too loud.  

The release is visually scored by Marseille-based graphic guru Ben Hubbard, responsible for previous Global Warming artworks from Realitycheck, Jon Beige or Ouai Stéphane. He’s adding an extra layer of styles crossover, using a blend of video footage, graffiti, visual warps and collage to create a unique piece for each track.

Global Warming Records is run by Franco-British producer and talent seeker Malcolm, who imagines and shapes each project hand in hand with his artists. Global Warming just won the Ed Banger & Trax Magazine prize for the most promising electronic labels. Baile / Tooping will be the label’s 19th release.

The title track 'Squib' is Eli's first foray in 4x4 music and showcases his talent for energetic moves whilst still retaining a taste for detail. With a lead built out of a twisted vocal sample and a bass that's as grooving as it is chest pumping, it perfectly sets the tone for the EP.

‘AC4XT’ is a sleeping giant, again using the powerful rips and an earth shattering break and a sub that is oh so reminiscent of the old DMZ days but wholly different. The synth lines are tactile - loud, almost overpowering at times but once they disperse the space that is left is wide and compelling.

Australian based ambassadors of genre fusing techno X CLUB. make their anticipated EP debut with ’SCUM’. Shifting between hasty breaks and propulsive 4/4 kicks, the EP focuses upon a definitive neo-futuristic rave sound inspired by a combination of 90s rave, jungle, electro and warehouse techno. Amongst clear hints of nostalgic influence, X CLUB. have involved a quantitive level of abrasive digital and analogue sound design in sculpting their signature techno-grime texture. Featuring four dynamic heaving club cuts, ‘SCUM’ explores tones of darkness while inducing a trance-like sense of euphoria. Break Cycle marks Fly By Night’s third release of 2020 with a heavy fusion of breaks & electro from up-and-coming artist Tom Place in a 3-track EP. Following his releases on Bade Records and Aloka’s Typeless, this year has marked an emergence for Tom as he further embellishes his recognisable brand of techno inspired electro. The EPs opener, Eight Five, is a heavy-hitting electro track featuring a rolling drum beat and an instantly recognisable vocal echoing throughout its’ inner realms. Followed up by its’ more spacey counterpart Break Cycle, a track which builds tension perfectly and exactly surmises what makes Tom’s production so exciting to listen out for right now. Featuring heavy UK bass influences, this track really doesn’t belong in a world where vibrating soundsystems can’t pulse out its’ unrelenting bassline. The EP is wrapped up with the genre-defying Transients, a floaty, emotional track, which serves as a reminder to Tom’s dubstep roots, while still remaining indistinctively electro. Break Cycle embodies a perfect summary of the direction Fly By Night are pushing into as a label, at the start of a busy period of more things to come from both the artist and label.
