Parisian producer DJ @atlance follows up an appearance on Happiness Energy’s various artist compilation late last year with five sun-soaked house cuts on @runningoutofsteam, just in time for January coming to an end.

‘After The Storm’ maintains its housey aesthetic, but this time on an electro-tipped 2-step; instantly recognisable vocal samples, dreamscape aesthetics and meditative breaks uniting on a blissed-out trip.

Remembered for his dreamy deep house soundscapes inspired by the south of France, Kousto channels memories of summer along the coast. While the producer relocated to London in the mid-20s to soak up the creativity and multiculturalism that the metropolis beholds, Kousto remains synonymous with analogue sounds and musical waves that journeys listeners through poolside paradigms. 

Kousto first emerged in 2018. Performing under a pseudonym, the artist’s name is inspired by the French explorer, Jacques Cousteau. Since his inception, his presence on the emerging artist scene has been firmly established with a slew of critically-acclaimed releases and support from artists including Laurent Garnier, Honey Dijon and Folamour; the latter of who also acts as his production adviser. 

Kousto has been tipped as “one to watch” by BBC 1 and BBC 1 Dance, has received press coverage in Resident Advisor, Liberation, and Mixmag and is a regular on the UK festival and event scene. In 2019, Kousto launched Little Foot Records – a platform for the French producer to exercise complete creative freedom and see his ideas come to fruition. Since, Kousto has released a suite of EPs on the label, the first being Step by

Step in 2019. Next to follow was The Tombolo on Kombava Records (2019), of which its principal track “Wildin’ Out” led to the widespread acknowledgement of Kousto across the mediasphere. 2020 saw the release of “Guadapipi” on Little Foot Records – a track tipped as an “Ibiza Dance Floor Moment” by TSHA on BBC1 Radio. Following this, Kousto’s summer EP, The Aquarium Effect, received attention for its hit track “The Job” ft. Aroop Roy which was supported by Disclosure in their Cercle set in August 2020. 

In 2021, Kousto's new year single release "Earth Embassy" earned itself media attention due to its hopeful affirmations in the face of the pandemic that waged on. April 2022 marks Kousto's sixth release: Unexpected Voyage. Upholding his familiar style of musical dreamscapes that recall summer settings and far-off places, Unexpected Voyage is a gateway into Kousto’s mind’s eye: postcards of memories, reflections on the future.

The history of Sai Ying Pun long began in the mid-19th century when the British military first landed and set up their camps in the area before the colonial era which in turn boosted the development of the neighbourhood, and the name Sai Ying Pun literally means ‘western camps’.

On duty for this release we have three French artists, Reba, Romain FX & Sanpé, that have embraced the Hong Kong experience in their life at different times.
The first track is a heavy hitter from Reba that takes a very UK/Dancehall approach with dry drum machine sounds and a catchy repeated vocal throughout the track, dance floor killer guaranteed. The second track is jumping dance floor guaranteed with a more groovy house track from Romain FX, incorporating chops throughout with deep bass line breaks and dreamy house chords to then get lifted off into the air. And finally to close off the EP with have Sanpé with a very minimal gloomy approach, keeping the deep house vibes we like with subtle touches of raw goodness throughout.

Tee Mango - Do U Luv Me?  [Delusions of Grandeur]

Tee Mango joins the Delusions of Grandeur fold for his ﬁrst full EP release, although we feel like we’ve been connected for many years through buying his Millionhands T-shirts, playing his excellent releases and having him previously remix Ron Basejam for the label back in 2017.   He is someone who has always carved his own path with attention to detail and aesthetics seemingly as important as the music, Tom has been a good example of how to make the DIY approach work for yourself since his ﬁrst vinyl output back in 2012.  Millionhands and Millionhands Black have seen the majority of his original material and edits but we’ve also seen him appearing on Royal Oak, Aus and Local Talk and future output planned for Permanent Vacation and his own new label  SUPERUNKNOWN.

 

Opening track Cityspell goes for the jugular with a pulsing 16th-note bassline sitting centre stage while huge washes of deep pads layer up around it.  Sirens and horn stabs join the scene adding increasing energy, making this one of those tracks that nails the balance between hypnotic deepness and hyped up intensity perfectly for the danceﬂoor.  Flipping over we have Do U Luv Me? which kicks off with a simple one-note Moog bassline and syndrum white noise snares before some crazy, off-kilter cross-rhythm synth stabs join the party; cue heads running to the booth asking wtf?!  Just the kind of wonky, outerspace sh*t that we’ve come to love and expect from masters such as Maurice Fulton or Recloose.  

 

Finally Tee Mango closes off with another absolutely killer cut featuring live-sounding drums calling ‘Paperclip People’s Throw’ to mind with those rasping open hi hats and rolling two beat bassline.  A tripped-out female vocal sample and extra acid-esque synth line add to the frenetic atmosphere but melodic arpeggiating chimes ensure things remain deep and musical. A really strong three tracker we’re sure you’ll agree.  Give them a spin out and share the love in your charts and mixes!
