B4. Kessler - Onion Muncher

Following a collaborative release on Sherelle and Naina’s Hooversound Recordings and EPs on Sneaker Social Club, WNCL Recordings and his own Club Glow (ran alongside Denham Audio, LMajor and Borai), contemporary UK breaksmith Mani Festo readies four typically lairy cuts of gun-finger, rush-in-the-rave energy. 

Mani Festo has become something of a breakbeat assassin in recent years with a deserved spotlight being shone on the producer as one of the brightest artists to emerge from within the dark ‘n’ dutty UK breaks and electro scene. What you see is what you get from Mani Festo; what you’re getting is a screwface and a smacked jaw. 

‘Leviathan’ kicks things off with its stripped-back, grime-like textures - distorted kicks, frantic claps and growls from the belly of the beast blend on a minimal-breaks sequence that packs quite a punch despite its uncluttered soundwaves. ‘Tethys’ follows in a similar vein; distorted screams come from a brass-creature deep in the darkness, scattered percussion and step-tipped production blur the lines between garage, breaks and electro.

Large wubs and basslines guide the listener front left (just make sure you’ve got your protective earplugs in!) on ‘Night Drive’ before ‘With U’ strays down an emotional and introspective route with its otherworldly atmospherics, jungle tones and contemplative stillness - a creative combining of both heaven and hell.

Premiere: Max Ulis ‘Detroit Tale (ft. Khari McClelland)’

West Coast Canada producer and DJ Jesse Bru, as well as being a regular on SlothBoogie Records, has been releasing his twist on contemporary house via the likes of Happiness Therapy, Pulse Msc and Inhale Exhale amongst others in recent years.

Here we see him team up with fellow Vancouver-based artist Max Ulis, who also operates as one half of the duo Sabota.

‘Banh Mi’ leads the way and much like the Vietnamese delicacy itself lays down a delectable soul-infused feel filled with dubbed out chords, distorted drums, and vocal chants.

‘Moisture Cult’ follows and retains a similarly dubbed out feel, fusing spiralling stab echoes and pulsating subs with shuffled drums.

‘TBH’ then shifts focus over to a modern electro feel with crunchy 808 drums, snaking arpeggio lines, resonant leads, and elongated subs.

‘Semblance’ which twists and turns through choppy breaks, intricately intertwined bass stabs, plucked synths and airy atmospherics before

‘Big Chirp’ rounds out the release on a raw house tip with swinging drums, squelchy acid bass tones and sweeping ethereal pads.

Impatience had got the better of them, it felt as though they'd been waiting around for an eternity for something to happen. The longer they waited, the slower time seemed to pass; a minute felt like an hour and an hour like a day. A change had to come soon, chronic boredom would inevitably set in and before too long they'd become sick of each other's presence. They were tired of playing the waiting game.

Vancouver-based label Club Designs have announced their third VA release, and the second shining a light on fresh electro sounds. Having previously paid homage to the sounds of ghetto house, the imprint now turn their attention back to the Detroit genre with eight artists showcasing their take on it through a modern lens. Label bosses Garneau and Sharkki deliver tracks, alongside their label mate Dj Failure, and several new artists including Ghostwhip, Partick Cure, Stuster, Max Ulis and Destrata.

As we gently rest in the soft hard reality, It Keeps On Raining. But rain is good for nature and the soul is cleansed with inspirational triggers. We know what’s next. After party vibes before the party begins. That’s because there’s never an in between. It’s all part of this same program. 

You finally enter the new place in town. It’s called Post Nature. Immediate response. Speedy lights and smoke machines. Sensors on the ground. Darkened walls. You look left and right and give a nod of appreciation. They feel what you feel and I feel what I haven’t felt in a while. Let’s jump in this together. 

In the zone you realize reality is as real as it gets. What’s The Trouble, Bubble? Nothing, nothing at all. We’re proud of this particular moment, of this specific movement, of this very day and age. It has come, and we saw it coming all along.
