Joe Delon loves music. You might think that would (or should) be self-evident in someone who DJs for a living, but the electronic music world would be a better place if everyone cared and thought as much as he did. In addition to being an increasingly in-demand DJ, he runs a stellar label, Welt Discos and moonlights as a music writer, with a beloved Substack newsletter that he usually updates twice a week. A blend of touring DJ travelogue and mix recommendations, it's a rich source of information and music from an artist with a warm, friendly voice—and perhaps more importantly, impeccable taste.

It's that taste that has endeared him to many dance music fans around the world over the last few years, developing a dedicated fanbase who greet every new mix with bated breath (including, hopefully, this one). He's something of a record digger, but not in the clichéd way—he just loves to find records new and old full of melody, springy rhythms and a generally quirky, positive vibe. The music he selects often has an '80s tinge to it, even when it's not from the '80s, but it's hard to pin down what he plays, both because his sets are so unpredictable, and because it wouldn't be fair.

His RA Podcast, as he explains below, is meant to sum up his last year of DJing, a carefully put together selection of favourites from 2022 (meaning records he played that year, not that came out last year). As always, it's a mix of familiar and far-flung records, mixed with Delon's breezy, unique style. Part of the reason why people have come to love his DJing so much is that it just kind of puts a smile on your face. Listen and you'll see.

Much like a slowly rising sun and a day's wonder, this mix intends to caress your soul in the morning, setting the stage for a joyful day ahead. It includes some oddballs because life has its quirks, and it naturally extends until you're ready to settle down with "un verre de vin" at night.

Romain FX, a passionate music enthusiast with a wide range of creative projects, serves as a producer, remixer, editor, and graphic designer. Romain operates his own record label (Fauve Records), and runs Fauve Radio with other dedicated music enthusiasts worldwide to organize events and podcasts, aiming to bridge the gap between the Asian and European music scenes. For a band whose identity in pop culture is often subject to oversimplified definitions and reductive jokes, The Grateful Dead's music frequently evades concise pigeonholing. Formed in California during the high watermark of post-war US counterculture, the Dead weave a psychedelic tapestry of folk, jazz, bluegrass, country, gospel, reggae, rock and blues, where the beginnings and ends of each influence disappear. 

Their trademark marathon live performances, loose improvisational style and famously loyal fans make The Grateful Dead arguably a one of a kind phenomenon in popular music.

909 is a special number for us at RA—the name of one of the most hallowed drum machines in all of music, and one of the foundations of techno music—and we're more than happy to offer it up to a DJ who has been a long-time favourite of our team: Glasgow's Bake. In fact, we commissioned this mix roughly ten years ago, but you can't rush perfection. 

When Bake emerged as one of the heads heads behind the label All Caps—a relatively short-lived but influential imprint that released massive tracks like Flørist's "Marine Drive" and Kowton's "TFB"—he also quickly became one of the most impressive DJs in the post-dubstep access, appearing frequently at Hessle Audio events and sharpening his skills behind the decks at the country's best parties. Now he runs his own, Spirit, at Sub Club.

He has a wide-ranging style that touches on all kinds of leftfield techno and broken drum patterns. His nearly two-hour RA Podcast finds him at the end of a sort-of comeback year, and it touches on tracks from Shackleton, Laksa, Batu, Karima F and Levon Vincent, to give you an idea. It's the kind of mix that oozes expertise and practice without feeling showy—the signs of a truly great DJ. If you don't know Bake, then now you do.

This week REEF resident ESPOSITO steps up in our Rhythmic Culture podcast, delivering an excellent warm-up for their event at Berghain this weekend. Not only is he the production manager and mastering engineer of Darwin's SPE:C label, he also released his record 'Framing Void' on that same label in 2022. His style crosses a range of sounds from his infamous atmospheric, tension building, ambient warm-ups to subwoofer wrecking bass and techno sets on the main floor. 

Over the course of 60-minutes we get treated with a fresh sound for anyone wanting to dip into the dub and bass side of the universe, as he slowly weaves his way from half tempo heavyweight sounds into thrilling drum 'n bass. Don't forget to catch him at the REEF party this Friday.

"Sometimes I set out with a clear technical objective in mind, sometimes less so. A technical objective just means I know the range of what I want to play and have a vague idea how I'm going to execute it.

This set wasn't like that at all. It was only about reaching a vibe and switching through the emotions I would want to experience towards the end of a festival. I was not concerned about each mix being smooth as a petal, my concern was only where we were going. 

Despite the mix suffering the cold coat of being a basic output job - no crowd, no audible insults - the warm, sloppy heart is there somehow. You can hear the cuts and shifts being driven by the faces in front. This is a simple back and forth between me and them, no more, no less.

Call Super at Dekmantel Festival 2016

Leopold first got heavily into electronic music through Cologne's then-vibrant Drum'n'Bass-scene. Raised on a healthy diet of Jungle, DnB and original Dubstep, his urge to share contemporary music soon found an outlet via radio shows on the city's student radio station Kölncampus. While hosting weekly on air-sessions for other DJs, he developed an interest in mixing vinyl himself. 

Around that time artists like Martyn, Boddika or Scuba were all changing their game, moving into house and techno and thus paving the way for Leo's slow transition from breakbeats into 4/4-territory. Today his bass music roots are still audible, yet he selects from across the whole board, ranging from dusty disco-edits to analog lo-fi house to gritty warehouse techno. All connected by a red thread of grainy atmosphere, of sounds rich with texture, of limping rhythms and hazy moods that always seem just a bit blurred. 
His own monthly club night DOB (running from 2015-2019) aimed to facilitate this spectrum as well, inviting unknown local talent and like-minded vinyl lovers. Being a bearer of the groove by all means, you will find Leopold bopping on the floors around the world just as much as behind the decks in the booth. 🎶
