A BBC report on the 3rd annual Delia Derbyshire Day at HOME in Manchester on 17th January 2016. Featuring interviews with project manager and Radiophonicist Caro C, Dr. David Butler, the man in charge of the Delia Derbyshire archive and composer Mandy Wigby -, as well as a couple of surprises from the great lady herself. Delia Derbyshire Day Report For BBC Radio 4 / World Service 17.01.16

A much cleaner recording than the one I posted yesterday, with some enthusiastic whooshing ... here's the backstory.

Over 52 years ago, I heard the Doctor Who theme for the first time at my grandmother's house in Sheffield, at the Stones brewery in Burton Road, Sheffield, the first ever episode. I was only 4 years old, the sounds terrified me, the whole family sat transfixed at the noises, which had been created some months previously by the awesome Delia Derbyshire at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. No synthesizers, just wobulating oscillators, tapes and a shedload of patience, diligence and dazzling creativity. 

That was 1963.

Now it's 2016 (bloody hell, last time I looked it was 1978) - can you believe you can do all that AND MORE for £4.99 today? One Raspberry Pi Zero (£4), one 99p USB audio interface, and the difficult bit - a huge bunch of very specialized, hardcore, time-consuming software development.

This track has 8 Virtual Analog monosynths, one wavetable synth (polysynth but with polyphony set to 1 as I am somewhat lax with the noteOff messages throughout!) and a single sample replay synth for the Tardis takeoff effect.

The VAsynths are : 
Channel 1 : kick/tom - noise, bandpass filtered slightly resonant, and an EG to shape the amplitude
Channel 2 : snare (same setting as 1 but up the scale)
Channel 3 : the old faithful 'Martyn Ware Glitterclap' - these 3 are not exactly canonical but I wanted to add in a blast of "Human League do Gary Glitter / Doctorin the Tardis" for the outro. This is a burst of noise modulated by a square wave LFO, shaped by an EG to become a decaying train of noise pulses, bandpass filtered and quite resonant to emphasise the clappiness
Channels 4/5 : a pair of Radiophonic Wobulators, sin waves which warm up (some Phase Distortion, some morphing to slightly square) under a slow ramping EG, which also ramps up the LFO amplitude that is FM and AMing them. These have a bend range of +- 24 semitones for the giant 2 octave swoops
Channel 6 : the diddly dum bass riff. This is really velocity sensitive, both in amplitude and in brightness. OSCB gets louder under velocity, and both OSCs sharpen up under hard bashing - the 'fine pitch' modulation output is hooked into a fast EG. So really hard hits sound like plucked strings, sharpening immediately under tension then going true very quickly
Channel 7 : a bass 'slurp' for the grace notes - a slightly less bright version of the riff, and with a larger reverb send amount to distance it
Channel 8 : a noise generator with a keyfollowed bandpass filter, with some resonance to be played manually (hence hamfisted noises throughout). Heavily feedback delay adds SFX swishy whooshy things to the mix - really spacey, dude!
Channel 9 : a wavetable synth for the 'melodica' melodic notes
Channel 10 : EXTERMINATE! Samples, for the heck of it

Plus there are 4 delays with low pass filters and independent LR settings for delay, levels and feedback levels, plus a stereoizing reverb engine.

Can you believe it - 10 whole synths, all of them awesome, 8 of them virtual analog, on £4.99 of computer hardware. Less than 5 quid!!! 2016 is an insane place to be.

Thanks for the awesome arrangement Delia. And thanks to the Timelords for "Doctorin' The Tardis", spotting the unholy glory that is the mashup of Delia Derbyshire and early 70s glitterpop. So glorious a mashup that Hell's Bells, I just HAD to slap the tempo up from 140 to 143 BPM as the drums kick in. I go WHOO HOO every time that happens, and I don't often get actually excited by something I've created.

¿Qué es lo que hace que un mismo espacio sea percibido de maneras tan diferentes?

Temazcal es una obra que busca abordar éstas preguntas mediante el sentido del oído, entrelazando las diferentes experiencias sonoras con ritmos electrónicos que transforman la experiencia auditiva en un momento en específico.

Experimentado junto con la audiencia diversos estados de percepción; buscando entender cómo un mismo espacio habitado por las mismas almas, se transforma con el transcurrir del tiempo y de las historias.

The space that traces the ear in the darkness becomes a cavity sculpted directly into the interior of the mind.
What is it that causes the same space to be perceived in such different ways?

Temazcal is a work that analyzes these questions through the sense of hearing, interlacing the different sound experiences with electronic rhythms that transform the auditory experience at a specific moment.

Experienced together with the audience diverse states of perception; seeking to understand how the same space inhabited by the same souls, is transformed with the passage of time and stories.

Compositions from our "create your own electric storm" workshop for children ages 7-13 with an accompanied adult. Inspired by the working methods of Delia Derbyshire and the cult "An Electric Storm" album by White Noise (Derbyshire, David Vorhaus & Brian Hodgson) released in 1969. This was a surround sound taster workshop with 5.1 speaker system provided by Genelec/Source Distribution & RME Audio/Synthax Audio. The workshop was hosted by Spirit Studios in Manchester, UK.

Lightning Strike

The Blues (Gramophonic Remix) is a performance combining a new composition made entirely of gramophone loops, that have been extracted from the 78rpm shellac record, The Blues: Part One by Artie Shaw and His Band and then been pressed into dub plate (45rpm) and live gramophone glitching, playing the original record on a wind-up gramophone. By reinventing the uses of the mechanical musical hardware Naomi has developed and extending her craft of extracting unexpected sounds from existing music on 78rpm records using tactile techniques to create new, yet intrinsic sounds, both live and in the form of a new piece of composed music using Logic Pro.

Naomi's new performance comprises of three interweaving parts:

Part 1: Playing the 78rpm record, The Blues: Part One by Artie Shaw and His Band on a wind-up gramophone (the source of the extracted 'found sounds').

Part 2: Playing The Blues (Gramophonic Remix); a piece of music that has been composed using Logic Pro 9 that is made entirely of gramophone loops extracted by re-appropriating the 78rpm record with electrical tape (the tape adds an additional tactile layer that in turn creates unexpected percussive discordances, harmonies and manually maintained locked grooves when played, as the steel needle staggers or glides across the discreetly undulating strips of electrical tape). This technique captures and reveals unexpected sounds and melodic fragments that are intrinsic and are coaxed out through playful, visual and skilful methods. The sounds have been manipulated in Logic; changing the pitch and tempo of the loops, boosting the bass and reversing the audio.

Part 3:  Live gramophone glitching using the 78rpm record and electrical tape to reveal the process of extracting the unexpected hidden riffs and melodies within the record; the process used to coax out the loops that were then recorded and manipulated and arranged in The Blues (Gramophonic Remix). Due to the mechanical nature of the gramophone, it has to be wound up in order to maintain the desired tempo. The constant ritualistic maintenance and tactile involvement in playing the re-appropriated record, reveals the attention, maintenance, mindfulness and sometimes stillness (locked grooves are sustained manually by keeping the needle in exactly the same position) that is required.

Delia Derbyshire Day is a Manchester-based organisation which pays homage to the late great Delia Derbyshire (1937-2001) – a pioneer of electronic music in England in the 1960’s. She is most famous for realising Ron Grainer’s original Dr Who theme in 1963, but during her time at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop she produced so much more music and sound for radio, TV and theatre. Delia’s archive is housed at University of Manchester. 

Delia Derbyshire Day (DD Day) is an almost annual event in Manchester, with national touring events and an on-going education programme.
