Deep Shoq - Overture

The latest instalment of the Darker Than Wax Free DL Series comes from long-time label stalwart Deep Shoq, based in Vilnius, Lithuania. With 2 official DTW releases under his belt and a track on the latest New Times compilation, Deep Shoq also recently headlined the DTW 5 Year anniversary party in Singapore alongside Maxx Mortimer.

Always searching for a seamless blend between future beats, contemporary electronica and r&b flavours, his sound sits in the beat-laden, post-dubstep territory with a very chilled, almost hip-hop vibe that rattles with mellow synth lines and chopped soulful vocals intermittently. Fresh from his first visit to the Darker Than Wax HQ in Singapore, Deep Shoq brings us a beautifully crafted dancefloor cut - Overture.

It's been a while..

Top Floor (Feat. Wize)

After what feels like an age of phone-based negotiation and Northern barneys, ASOK finally joins the Lobster fam proper blasting down from the icy territories and bringing the cold winds of UK rave yore to the front of the queue.

Universe 3 is a glistening, glacially slow-moving ambient piece that shimmers and folds through the spectrum, with small sparkles and hints of twinkling optimism peppered into it's spacial framework. The one that nearly got away, Track Four, is a crunchy, scourged techno drum heater that bangs the drum of enchantment whilst raising the spirits of long-long civilisations through spiritual pads and alien synth work.

Title track Virtual Light kicks off the flip. Built around a core of stolid deep house, but drawing on a solid template of NY house and central German deepness (think Joey Anderson meets Christopher Rau). Proper hazy, aquatic vibes into the dark depths.

Lastly, and easily the artist and label fave, I Mean You No Harm arrives as a subtle reminder of the simplicity needed to conjure the heaviest moments. Essentially an enormous hardcore number just minus any form of breaks and stripped to the core. Nagging sirens and pitched wails sound off into the night air. A proper staggered basement weapon this!

Next up on Modern Ruin is one of the most exciting artists to emerge in the past year.

Hailing from Leeds, we have Breaka with 'Express Your Groove'. 

We kick off with 'Pull and Release' - a tempered footwork jungle crossover expedition peppered with ethereal female vocal chops. 
A haunting mid range accompanies tuned 808s and melodies, pulling and releasing the listener into and from the track as and when intended.

Next up is 'The Mistake'. Breakbeats and a vicious stab set the tone for the rest of the track, but Breaka switches things up with a 
dutty half time groove. The classic hoover bass makes a return in the latter parts of this track and a melodic hook sees 'The Mistake' out to the end. 

Title track 'Express Your Groove' is next. Sampling Wish and Fonda Rae's 'Touch Me', one can be forgiven for thinking this is a tribute to Machinedrum's 'Heavy Weight',
where instead we're treated to a frenetic breakbeat expedition in what can only be described as an effective expression of groove - truly a standout.

Longtime Modern Ruin afictionado and conspirator Itoa returns with a remix of 'The Mistake', and in classic fashion, 'The Mistake' becomes a percussive 
and minimal experiment, which sees out Breaka's fantastic and comprehensive release to the end.

We have been keeping in touch with samsin and his music for a minute now, after stumbling upon some of his earlier works, which eventually led to two singles on our Freebie series. 
Considering that he only recently developed an interest for music production in 2015, and eventually started to take the craft seriously at the beginning of 2016, samsin has shown a certain maturity. The summer of 2016 brought more attention from his contemporaries and led to various releases.  Samsin's style always allows you to imagine yourself in another place, and each of his songs reflects a deep insight into the way he thinks about space and textures. His taste brings excitement and intricacy with vivid floating melodies, punchy drums and a delicious blend of percussion and vocal chops - something that resonates with the spirit of DTW and we warmly welcome him to our growing family of artists.

A direction of local sounds to where I grew up along with experimentation and new ideas. This EP is just a few projects which i've been working on in January. Some were meant for the Early Days album (which i will be releasing in the first half of 2017) But I felt these 5 tracks just fit together like a puzzle!
