It’s Italian time! Sam Ruffillo is back. Sicilian producer doing smooth Balearic disco with Italian vocals. The direction is clear: Sam Ruffillo's music brings us back into the Italian riviera and the hippy days of Ibiza in the late 1970ies. Even his way of production is similar to how the early days disco producers in Italia used to work: No samples needed. Instead a few guest musicians come to jam over Sam's beats in his Italian studio space. Guitar, bass, percussions. Sam later makes the production and added keyboard solos and put together the vibes into what is this new EP.

The girl voice comes from NINFA. It’s the classic studio story: Ninfa is a singer and DJ and friend of Sam. She was hanging at the studio while Sam was finishing these tracks. She stated to sing along... the words came up spontaneously… so they decided to record her and finally decided to keep them. The vibe was too good. Why talk English if u can do it better: in Italian! :)

This is second for Toy Tonics after his Sport House EP from last year. Sam also appeared on the solo record of Joel Holmes on Toy Tonics. Together with Kapote Modica he co-produced and made the beats on that record. Now Sam is back with this pure Italian EP. Inclusive remixes by new German artists Gome and Italian Musemeci - known to many from his fabulous Italo-trance releases on Diynamic records.

Rotterdam based producer DJ Crisps follows up releases on Riz La Teef’s ‘South London Pressing’ and Bristol UKG label Time Is Now with three original dubs that blur the lines between garage, hardcore and breakbeat. 

Crisps has a knack for breaks (see Freedom with Ell Murphy). Luvin You walks the tightrope of rough and smooth; it’s chipmunk vocals, ethereal atmospherics and nostalgic samples creating a plethora of heads down and hug-in-the-rave moments. 

It’s A Dark Day is a tale of anxiety. Beginning with soft, uplifting chords it begins optimistically before bassy swells of darkness surface amongst spooked-out vocals and huge wubs. Music Is My Life sees Crisps return to garage territory with a soulful stepper that evolves into a dutty, no phones allowed affair. 

Rounding off the record is a remix of Music Is My Life from standout producer Mani Festo following a wicked release on Sneaker Social Club. He delivers a typically transportative, perception-altering cut of emotionally-stirring breaks that showcases the artist's infatuation with the tension between futurism and tradition.

'Labyrinth Records continues its 2021 schedule this December with a debut EP from Innervisions-mainstay Alex Medina. AlgoRhytm EP acts as the third release on the label, fresh from the success of Cedric Sheva’s Tour d’Velo and Tronica already this year. The lead single, AlgoRhytm, will be out on 29th October, setting the tone for a standout year for the label.

Alex Medina described how the release came to fruition, stating: “My inspiration is always the same - surfing, meditation, family and my love of electronic music. I'm happy when someone understands my sound, which Nick does, so I was excited to contribute to his label Labyrinth Records.”

AlgoRhytm leads the charge. An atmospheric dance cut, gentle key rolls meander into whispering kick-hat combos, showcasing the raw and emotive sound with which Medina has become best known.
Indeed, such a sound has not gone unnoticed by one of electronic music’s leading figures in recent times. Having been voted the world’s No. 1 DJ by Resident Advisor three years in a row, it was in 2020 that Dixon signed Alex’s Golden Teacher to Innervisions, releasing it as part of the label’s pivotal Transmoderna compilation. The track received its first play on Dixon’s ‘Streaming From Isolation’ Boiler Room mix that year.

The German-linchpin continued to support Alex’s musical output throughout 2020. Endless Summer from Medina’s own Mumbai Records became a staple record of Dixon’s performances, despite dancefloors being few and far between. Such a feat only highlights the quality of Alex’s productions, a testament to his keen-ear for producing compelling, emotionally-charged dance music.

The next phase of the EP will come in December, when Biesmans remixes will be heard for the very first time. It will begin with his Ambient Version of Thicker Than Water, as the Belgian sculpts a musical narrative packed full of poignant chords and beautiful key solos. His regular remix comes next, manifesting as a driving dance cut that feels rhythmic and electric in one thanks to an infectious synth-fuelled backbone, whilst AlgoRhytm gets beautifully reinvented to end proceedings on a high.

Spanish-mainstay Alex Medina is an established figure in the electronic music sphere. Cutting his teeth in the early nineties, his discography boasts releases on some of dance music’s most-esteemed imprints, including Innervisions, Stil Vor Talent and many more besides.'

This EP is going to be something so exciting for the Mr Disc and real italo-disco purist.
Digging the huge label’s warehouse it happened that old tapes were found. Songs written and recorded in the early ‘80s and never produced or released before. Until today. 
It comes that the tunes included in this EP are some of those and the Maxero project finally sees the light. “Silenced By You” and “Melancholy Cowboy” reveal their pure italo-disco roots and are re-arranged to spin on clubs and have a privileged place on collector’s shelves.

“Silenced By You” is a massive neon-lit stomping synth-filled jam remixed by “nu italo-disco” sensation Mind Enterprises.
Brothers in Lows instead provide a mystical rendition of the tune. On the flipside, “Melancholy Cowboy” is the perfect cosmic seductive retro-future lick ready for an inspiring car trip in the middle of nowhere, crafted by Brother In Lows and Flavia Lazzarini who deliver two different sides of such a romantic vision.
