Mom’s new red and white running shoes a gentle little wolf pursues 
we turn into hers as she turns into the terminal
and Mom hugs her little passengers the barred owl laughs we have from her 
rings of summer rain she turned into the two of us and

midnight in Baltimore County, one for the drive, one for the night in  

our old room, with the curtains dancing as they danced as every doorway 
shrank to half its size and we didn’t notice 
one for the drive to our old school
