Music from Jinns and Tonic [Ep.3: Tennis Club Jazz]

There is quite an organic history to the Jinns and Tonic video series; heavily inspired by Katarakt’s Stoner House mixes and motivated by the termination of EELF’s first channel short of 200,000 subscribers. The first episode served as a call-to-action for rebuilding the temple that introduced multiple generations of listeners to the delicate pleasures of LoFi House. The culture pulled through and introduced new music from Quasar, DJ Ædidias, Nørus and several other young producers; setting a new precedent for premiering Various Artists compilations through YouTube/SoundCloud and giving exclusive content to the gate-keepers that deserve recognition for their curatorial duties. Consequently, Critique is scaling the influence of its artists and itself by facilitating these opportunities for all heavy-hitters, up-and-comers and superior-selectors to participate in something special, rooted in love for audiovisual ecstasy.

The third episode features the Critique wrecking crew DJibouti, DJacuzzi and GL4M alongside Rob Soul artist Dan Corco, Georgia State University student David Bulay, Francophone extraordinaire DJ Psychiatre and LoFi House's newest wizard TOMATOSLICE. While keeping to the series’ roots, “Tennis Club Jazz” departs from creating another hazy, expansive atmosphere and enters the Spring Equinox’s dance floor via red carpet, catwalk strut. Over the last few years, we have seen the rise of sample pack vocal use in house music. On some levels, it's been great for producers; they now have access to vocals without having to either write & create their own or clear a sample. It has decreased creativity and individuality on other levels as DJs and producers rework the same oft-used Splice vocals. Since women make most of the vocals, we could argue that Splice, Loopcloud, et al. have devalued their contribution to the scene by rendering them invisible. We are against this idea at Glasgow Underground and have featured (and paid royalties to) sample pack vocalists who we have used. All well and good, you say, but what does this have to do with Kevin McKay's new single? It uses a sample pack of vocals, of course! Kevin has loved this one since the Arthouse Acoustics pack came out but held off releasing it as AZZUR beat him to the punch with their excellent "Me Gusta". Since their version has had its time, we can release Kevin's into the wild. So here it is, wrapped up in the same good-time percussive pump that has made his and Amal Nemer's version of "In The Air Tonight" so popular.

Madrid native Dennis Cruz makes his Solid Grooves Records debut with three rumbling cuts including a remix from fellow countryman Wade.

Since his debut in 2010, Cruz has become a staple in Beatport’s charts, not to mention the sets of artists such as Marco Carola, Joseph Capriati, Nicole Moudaber, Yousef and Roger Sanchez. Throughout this time the likely producer has dropped releases on Saved, Deeperfect, Stereo Productions and Kinetika, not to mention his very own imprint Lemon-Aid Music. He now arrives on PAWSA & Michael Bibi’s Solid Grooves Records, joining the likes of Wade, Kuo Climax and Rockwell & Landers for an exciting second year for the label.

Initiating with the sound of a roaring crowd, ‘See Line’ was produced with the dancefloor in mind using thudding kicks, arcane vocal samples and an energetic rhythm. ‘Heads or Cruz’ is a more low-slung number with a focus on a killer groove, whilst ‘Bienvenido’ engages in a medley of percussive elements geared for peaktime antics. Tying the package together, Wade remixes ‘See Line’ to give it his signature twist whilst ensuring the heady vocals reiterate throughout.
