The phenomenon of HYSTÉRÉSIS appears when the value of a physical property lags despite the stop of the effect causing it. Here, this concept is used to underline the persistence of drone sound. Jesse Osborne-Lanthier & Asaël Richard Robitaille : Squished Kirby Tote-bag

→ Second episode in the NON-TRANCE series, once again led by DEMO affiliate @fredoleboss. For this session he decided to dive into the repetitive aspect of video games OST and their reminiscence in the contemporary music scene. OSTs are used to create the soundscape of video games, giving the visuals an audible continuation while dealing with a storage and computer power constraint, which often resulted in the same loop playing for hours. Often melancholic and meditative, video games OST have had a major influence on modern music producers such as James Ferraro, Oklou or Mumdance. The aim of this show is to depict the link between old OSTs and nowaday musician’s work, from the limited digital-orchestras of the 8 bit era to the proust Madeleine it now represents for these artists and their listeners, both embracing video games soundscapes and their legacy.

→ We commonly call NON-MUSIC sound objects without music such as poetry, special effects and sometimes even field recording or spoken word. This classification interested me a lot, as it tries to create a border between what is a musical object and what is not. Philosophically, this question arises : can we consider patterns of footsteps, industrial machinery or bird songs as music? What differentiates videogame soundscapes from experimental sound pieces? This third episode of the non-trance series attempts to develop an answer to these questions by navigating through very broad proposals of music and non-music: field recordings, drone, videogames soundscapes, industrial, FX, noise, sound pieces, spoken word, avant-garde…
The link that unites these sound objects is their ability to create a state of total immersion in the listener, the flow state, thanks to their repetitive and bewitching patterns, like intradiegetic sounds or narrative pieces.  Made by @fredoleboss.

→ 'DIGITONICA : Synthetic Opera' is a one hour mix by Anna Morskaya alias DIGITONICA, a russian musician and visual artist, initially broadcasted on LYL Radio. Russia is a great country, at the crossroads between eastern and western cultures. @DIGITONICA wishes to embrace this feature through her productions and 3D art. As a musician and singer she focuses on mixing a huge and diverse music heritage with new electronics, glitching russian opera’s melodies with various modern processes. Combining those traits she alsos uses several different vocal techniques, from academic singing to whispering, sometimes sounding angelic, sometimes like some weird creature. The result is an introspective work where DIGITONICA draws up a contemporary take of her classical formation, inspired by avant garde electronics as well as 19th century romantic music.

→ “The Esoteric Garden of Swirls” is the contribution of our longtime friend and tireless digger @leopleop to the DEMO podcast series. He takes us with him on an emotionally intense hour-long journey of intriguing electronic sounds. The trip takes unexpected turns and passes by contradictory yet complementary territories: the angelic and the visceral, the blissful and the crushing, the euphoric and the unsettling. It embodies mood swings, ambiguous feelings (towards dreams and reality, the virtual and the physical, solitude and social life, nature and the city, nighttime and daytime…) and the fact that, even in the midst of uncertainty and unrest, we can always find beauty in things.
