Synopsis:
During the darkest hours of the night, while the rest of the world is sleeping, outdoor photographer Paul Zizka ventures out into the wilderness in search of the world’s starriest skies. His journey to photograph the celestial wonders takes him from his home amongst the peaks of the Canadian Rockies to the wild, desert dunes of Namibia and remote ice caps of Greenland. Ever the adventurer, he must balance his work and passion for photography with his equal devotion as a family man. In the Starlight is an intimate portrayal of Paul’s quest to capture the night skies, and what his time spent under the stars has taught him about life, love, adventure, and our place in the universe.

ENSEMBLE ECONOMIQUE is Brian Pyle of Starving Weirdos and RV Paintings. His solo project (hence the slightly ironic moniker), which could be probably briefly classified as ambient / drone / psychedelic / shoegaze, has released various albums, splits and EPs on labels such as Digitalis, Amish, Not Not Fun, Dekorder and Clan Destine so far, before joining forces with Denovali Records in 2012. His new full length LIGHT THAT COMES, LIGHT THAT GOES constitutes Ensemble Economique's first release on Denovali, and is accompanied by another release, INTERVAL SIGNALS, which is a concept record consisting of a single coherent 40 minute long piece, interrupted only by the necessity to flip the vinyl record.

Brian lives in Humboldt county, a very isolated part of northern California which is probably one of the only places left in California where you can live on the beach and pay $500 per month rent, where both poor and rich can enjoy the profound beauty of this nature in equal measure. An epic coastline, the redwoods, seven different rivers, these surroundings have a profound impact on Ensemble Economiques's music, and Pyle is quite aware of this: "The nature here is pure drama. There’s so much space to move around here, get lost in. So many places to take LONG walks to nowhere, alone, just you and your thoughts, and some gorgeous scenery. It’s liberating, inspiring. I can see how it fucks up musicians in cities, being around so many other musicians and so many other ideas. I think it makes artists a little bit more self-conscious which maybe isn't the best thing when you're trying just to be free."

Exploiting the freedom of isolation, Brian utilizes found sounds, field recordings, and musical performance that he later meticulously edits, layers, and loops in the studio. The effects of these processes are dramatic, cinematic and conceptually rigorous and this recording evidences Pyle as an important new composer emerging out of the long and storied tradition of West Coast experimentalism. Pyle's practice involves a dense approach to composition akin to assemblage, but unlike electronic and laptop composition, Pyle's studio work aims to re-establish an organicism associated with live (or, in the case of the field recordings, lived) performance that pushes the studio out into nature and nature into the studio. The result is a seamless, cinematic tapestry of beauty, filled to the brim with cacophonous melodies, meditative auditory chants, & hypnotic shambolic rhythms. This is dense music that begs for deeper inspection. Each space, each note carefully chosen and etched into glass. Ensemble Economqiue is music for the darkest nights, the pinkest mornings, and everything in between. This is vivid, haunting music that leaves a trail of gold in its wake.

Indeed, the pieces comprising LIGHT THAT COMES, LIGHT THAT GOES are episodic in nature, a narrative arc, travelling from dark to light. They are loosely inspired by Brian's long walks along the ocean and the thoughts he would have. Each piece captures a mood, a feeling, a singular moment out there on the beach, on his long aimless walks to nowhere, the horizon stretching for infinity.

Eraldo Bernocchi and Hoshiko Yamane have come together again to create their second album - inspired by the Japanese concept of "Sabi". The record is a unique blend of electronic and acoustic music - with Bernocchi’s pulsating textures and Yamane's haunting treated violin melodies weaving together to create a captivating and emotional sonic landscape.

"Sabi" is a Japanese aesthetic that celebrates the beauty of impermanence and decay. It is often associated with the simplicity, austerity, and solitude found in nature, and is said to evoke a sense of melancholy, nostalgia, and reverence for the passage of time. Bernocchi and Yamane's "Sabi" explores these themes through a collection of minimalist compositions that combine electronic and acoustic instruments immersing the listener in a deeply cinematic experience.

Together, they again created a sound that is both beautiful and haunting, evoking the sense of nostalgia and reverence that is at the heart of the "Sabi" aesthetic. "Sabi" is a unique and powerful work of art that explores the beauty of impermanence and the passage of time. With its blend of electronic and acoustic elements, it is a record that is both modern and timeless, and is sure to appeal to a wide range of fans of electronic, ambient and experimental music. Taroug is the solo project by drummer and electronic music producer Tarek Zarroug with roots in the suburbs of the Tunisian desert and having grown up in Germany. Following the release of his 2020 EP, „Perpetual,“ as well as a number of notable remixes for artists such as Archive, Taroug has continued to refine his musical aesthetic.

Taroug‘s debut album Darts & Kites, set to be released on Denovali Records, draws inspiration from the Penrose tiling and explores themes of change and transformation. Fascinated from the pattern‘s unending possibilities, Taroug incorporated its infinite permutations not only into the album‘s nine tracks, but also in the cover art design.

Darts & Kites showcases a blending of genres and styles, resulting in a sonic landscape, that is both hunting and beautiful. Experimental and abstract soundscapes are enriched by oriental influences, collected field recordings, pulsating dark beats and hypnotic vocals.

The album also features the contributions of other notable artists, including Beate Wolff‘s cello performance on Jewels I. Benedikt Koch‘s saxophone adds a sense of controlled chaos with delayed and swelling notes to the track Deguech, while Timo Schieber‘s piano provides a crucial element of the album‘s title track, Darts & Kites. Niklas Genschel lends his vocals to Queen of Carthage, which also features the saz playing of Abdallah Abozekry.

Created in collaboration with architect and designer Marie Brosius, the album artwork captures different ornaments reflecting the album‘s content. Darts & Kites is a mosaic of sound, blending together elements of unfamiliar and familiar.

I have long been interested in sleep, the unconscious and the subconscious when it comes to audio, listening and music.  With the birth of my first daughter I became particularly interested in sleep and how to get more of it (I’m sure most parents go through this).  I composed several pieces of simple drone music as an aid to our family to try to help us relax and sleep.  I have no idea if it really worked.  Jimmy’s piece and write up led me back to some of these thoughts about sleep and particularly what role audio plays during sleep, getting us to sleep, meditation, relaxation, dreaming, etc.

Jimmy makes some comments in his write up about sounds detached from the listener.  While Jimmy sleeps he images the sounds being heard by the objects that make them.  This is a beautiful idea in and of itself but what strikes me as interesting is that Jimmy still includes himself in his sonic portrait; a body, lying still and unconscious, perhaps not listening to these sounds but somehow still connected to them.

What role does audio play in aiding sleep?  What role does audio play while we are asleep? These are both interesting questions to me and are central to my relay piece and inspired by Jimmy’s piece and thoughts.


I’ve sampled small portions of Jimmy’s piece and reconstructed them into very simple layered patterns that loop and oscillate.  For me they are the sounds of the process of sleep itself. They are the sounds of a sort of sleep machine, an audio bridge between the conscious and unconscious.

Another week, another track premiere… but is it truly just ‘another’ track that bubbled up onto the top of this appending queue? I feel I know the work that goes in by composers. No matter if the track is short of stretched in time. Each little note, each pad evolving in its frequency band. Each slight adjustment to the volume curve, to carry forth the story in dynamics. Each atmospheric treatment with the reverbed textures. Each painstakingly placed sound in the stereo field – front, back, and center. Post-processed, mixed, and mastered; listened to on every speaker; then played and listened to again, again, and then some more, until the music feels just perfect for the only one who made it. And what about the others? Will they hear the small details, the carved out, guided path, the melodies that pierce the harmony in places, the melodies that hold the message of the piece? Who’s genuinely listening out there, consuming and appreciating the endless time and love poured into music? I know that I am. I hope you hear it too…

This is the sixth full-length for Bordeaux-based Franck Zaragoza, appearing, once again, on the beloved n5MD under his Ocoeur moniker, under which he’s been making music for over a decade now. The album embraces sound design with its melodic side of synthesizer music. So all the knob-twist-junkies of the analog and software emulations can marvel at the output that’s much more than just another jamming-late-night-sink-hole of their time. Here, Zaragoza brings it all together into a single cohesive package of an album that seeps with inspiration from its every nook. The sound is rounded and gentle, in many places very vital and organic, and then is structured in the architecture of complex rhythmic twists [check out “Glow” on the full album when it comes out tomorrow]. Meanwhile, the concept comes in with a message, of slowly fading and receding from reality, into our anti-social, virtual, and ego-feeding worlds.
