Best known as half of post-classical / electronica duo Piano Interrupted, London based French producer Franz Kirmann goes back to his  electronic roots with “Meridians”, his second album, due out on Denovali Records next July.

Strongly influenced by movies (he used to be a film editor and filmmakers Wong Kar Wai, Michelangelo Antonioni, Sergio Leone or David Lynch are happily cited alongside his musical influences), Franz Kirmann has a weakness for walls of sounds and fragile melodies, which to him are the sonic equivalent of slow-motion sequences, travelling shots or landscapes in cinemascope.

While his first album – Random Access Memories (released in June 2011) - was a sort of compilation of music he'd written since 2005, “Meridians” is a more consistent proposition where tracks were put together using the same technique of assembling tiny audio snippets and samples with a strong emotional content (from a pop vocal to an orchestral extract) and transforming them beyond recognition, to then assemble them and create something new and unique.

Music was then composed from the resulting sampling manipulation, adding layers of vintage synthesizers, drum machines and granular soundscapes and resulting in a sound that could be best described as a meeting point between an 80's synthesizer soundtrack and a post-modern electronic record. 

The album title "Meridians" comes from the Chinese medicine's belief in the Meridian network, a path through which the life-energy flows. The album has a strong sense of an internal journey, the music being both an invitation to introversion and reverie but also suggesting an epic voyage. The meridians could be regarded as vessels carrying emotions, souvenirs, thoughts, travelling through the body and mind, provoking a voyage through one's own life without the need for movement.

Nods to the 7th art are not only found in the sound and feel of the album but also in its titles. Each of them suggest a story or moment while remaining vague enough to let the listener fills the blanks.

After 2016’s well-received EP,  'I Could See The Smoke', experimental guitarist Andy Cartwright (aka Seabuckthorn) returns with his new full-length album 'Turns' on vinyl, CD and digital with Lost Tribe Sound.  Cartwright immediately caught our attention with his commanding full-length album 'They Haunted Most Thickly' in 2015. With 'Turns', Cartwright further solidifies his anomalous position within the genres solo guitar music, American primitive, and modern classical. 

The vinyl and CD edition arrive in the ever stunning physically and sonically minded fashion that LTS has become known for. 'Turns' takes form with a lush 180 gram audiophile grade vinyl housed in a heavyweight reverse printed jacket (limited to 500). The lacquer process vinyl edition was masterfully cut by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering in NY. Each edition comes with a Bandcamp download coupon. 'Turns' is an album wrought with vertical forms, heavily cinematic in design and scope.  It’s an album built from the earth. Cartwright wields his minimal, yet powerful arsenal in new and intriguing ways throughout 'Turns', comprised of various twelve string guitars, a well worn resonator guitar and heavy waves of lumbering percussion. Plus, for the first time ever, Cartwright invites an outside player, composer and fellow friend of rustic orchestration, William Ryan Fritch to play double bass on three of the songs. To shed some light about how the piece was created, Will has shared some insight into how he went about approaching the concept of Scale.

'Throughout my career I've almost exclusively relied upon my ability to perform and record all the elements of my arrangements through multi-tracking as the means for realizing my compositions.

Because of this I am all too familiar with having to wrangle with proximity effect (how close an instrument or sound source is to the diaphragm of the microphone) and how can either aid or negatively impact a compositions sense of space and convincing ensemble qualities.

When Jim Perkins approached me about contributing to this compilation and mentioned the overarching theme was "scale" I immediately thought of how I might use proximity effect as a guiding identity for a composition.

For this project I decided to disassemble a few music boxes and experiment with using some of my larger instruments (my harp, Concert bass and kettle drum) as resonators for the boxes and mic'ing them at a good distance away from the attack of the tines giving these tiny little instruments a sound far more resonant than they would've had in there original cases. I pitted these ideas against the sound of the highest register of several larger instruments (Harp, Contrabass, cristal bichet and piano) playing the very highest register they could muster, mic'd them extremely close with small diaphragm mics to emphasize the attack and smallest minutiae of performative gestures. I continued to build on this inversion of physical size and pitch relationship for all the subsequent overdubs and arrangement (bass clarinet playing super high multi-phonics, the viola being tuned down a whole fifth and playing two octaves below the basses artificial harmonics etc etc)

It was a joyful little exercise and the tonality and spirit of the peace represents that enjoyment, I think!
