Erased Tapes and Kranky are pleased to announce the release of A Winged Victory for the Sullen's 'ATOMOS VII'. April 28 sees the first installment leading up to the release of the second full length studio album 'ATOMOS', and score for choreographer Wayne McGregor's long form dance piece. 

McGregor was heavily influenced by the duo's 2011 self-titled debut, playing it repeatedly during practices with his core group of dancers. After noticing the group's reaction with the music, he contacted Adam & Dustin to see if they could write the score for his new oeuvre. 

The duo recorded more than sixty minutes of music over a four month period during the summer of 2013 in Brussels, Berlin and Reykjavik with the help of their longtime collaborative sound engineer Francesco Donadello. This EP also sees the involvement of Ben Frost, who composed the music for McGregor's previous work 'Far'.

McGregor, mastermind behind the Random Dance Company and resident choreographer at the Royal Ballet since 2006, is known in popular culture circles for serving as movement director for the film 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'. He has also choreographed the Radiohead video 'Lotus Flower' and 'Ingenue' by Atoms for Peace.

"While we were re-amping guitars at Greenhouse studios, Ben expressed interest and admiration in the sounds we had created. We were planning for the B-side to be a metamorphosis of part VII, and Ben seemed the obvious choice. With the multi-tracks transformed, it follows a trajectory that we had not felt comfortable with before. Origamibiro is a collaborative project consisting of three core members: musician, soundtrack composer and producer Tom Hill, visual artist and filmmaker The Joy Of Box, and multi-instrumentalist Andy Tytherleigh. Originally started as a solo project for Tom, Origamibiro has since evolved into an audio-visual collective, producing studio music, art objects, interactive installations and hauntingly original live audio-visual performances. Origamibiro like to create work with an array of unorthodox processes and contraptions, found objects, video feeds and multi instrumentalism. Their unique live performances involve treated books, typewriters, found celluloid, paper, eerie wildlife recordings, home movies, sellotape and bespoke visual contraptions. All of these things had been added, adapted, even destroyed as a way to generate images and audio that could evoke a feeling, a response, an understanding or perhaps a question from audiences.

2014 sees the re-release of Origamibiro's entire back catalogue - the albums ‘Cracked Mirrors and Stopped Clocks’, ‘Shakkei’ and ‘Shakkei Remixed’ - through Denovali and also the release of their fourth studio album 'Odham's Standard'. Discussions concerning tone and theme took place much earlier in the writing process this time around and unbeknown to each other, both Tom and Jim were taking an interest in more supernatural aspects of audio and video material generation. Jim had begun to research into spirit photography, where images of deceased spirits are apparently imprinted onto photographic plates through the presence of a medium. Looking for an audio equivalent, Tom began looking into EVP or electronic voice phenomenon whereby hidden voices from deceased spirits appear to present themselves in audio recordings. What is fascinating about this process is not how legitimate the phenomenon actually is but how dependant it is on the decision or need of the viewer or listener to believe it is significant or even personal.

Interestingly, there have been many attempts over the years to debunk or disprove the validity of spirit photography and yet for every court case there are also a number of witnesses willing to passionately testify that not only is the phenomenon real but that it applied directly to them. Arthur Conan Doyle was the creator of the most famous detective in the world and, conversely, a staunch defendant of the validity of spirit photography. In his infamous treatise 'The Case For Spirit Photography' he is both naive and strangely prescient: “Victorian science would have left the world hard and clean and bare, like a landscape in the moon. (however) There is nothing scientifically impossible, so far as I can see, in some people seeing things that are invisible to others. One or two consequences are obvious, the experiences of children will be taken more seriously. Cameras will be forthcoming. These folk who appear to be our neighbours, with only some small difference of vibration to separate us, will become familiar.”

Written tonight on my flight home. I was inspired by a twitter chat about favorite composers and decided to read up on one of my favorite pieces by Strauss. Ended up listening to some Debussy and it inspired this. On the flight I experimented with some new granular/convolution ideas. Overdubbed piano (Pianoteq) in the kitchen with some Valhalla shimmer and Room (automated). This composition is one of 7

Nicht Musik [Verklärung] No.2 in D major

This track was written and recorded in a single day. It is a short "what if" thesis asking "What do acoustic gut string guitar, vocal, hammered dulcimer, AC-30/Ebo/Tele sound like with judicious amounts of spectral bluring and some Csound granular opcodes". Inspired by a conversation...a long and meaningful one, late at night. 

Sometimes conversations become a place, that in memory at least, you can return too. Listening to this I can remember where I was sitting, and the way I held the phone and exactly how I felt on this very hushed night. 

I took this photograph in Erskine in Australia (short drive inland from the coastal town of Lorne). It was taken on a 5DmII using a 17mm 1.4 L lense and I did minor color correcting/film grain/vignetting in Magic Bullet. It seemed to really suit this piece.

Features two tracks from 2 remarkable concerts at Melbourne Recital Centre in November 2011 and The Barbican Centre, London in January 2010 celebrating the legacy of one of England’s most revered singer/songwriters, Nick Drake.

Melbourne duo, Luluc lend a potent melancholia to Drake’s ‘Things Behind The Sun’ (from his third and final 1972 album ‘Pink Moon’) whilst exclusive to this 7”, the highly acclaimed Irish singer Lisa Hannigan presents an evocative rendition of ‘At The Chime Of A City Clock’ (from his second, ‘Bryter Layter,’ 1970).

‘Things Behind The Sun’ is taken from the forthcoming album, ‘Way To Blue : The Songs Of Nick Drake’ (released 15th April 2013).
Luluc’s forthcoming album was produced by Aaron Dessner of The National.

Nick Drake is an unlikely romantic hero. In the 1970s he was a minor English singer and songwriter who peddled a lyrical brand of introspection that earned him a small but devoted following and few record sales. Dogged by depression and embittered by his lack of success, he died of an overdose in 1974, virtually unknown and unnoticed. He left an amazing legacy - a handful of recordings of his sparsely beautiful songs across just three albums, less than two hours of music. But over the ensuing decades, the enduring potency of these songs has ensured Drake's reputation as one of the UK's truly great musical talents.

This was a session I worked in October with DM Stith (member of Sufjan Stevens touring band and Asthmatic Kitty label) and John-Mark Lapham (of The Earlies fame). EMA Studios at Houghton College equipment used: Avid Pro Tools HDX system, Grace, Amek Neve, Focurite Red Series preamps, AT 4050, Neumann KM 84, Avantone CK-1 microphones.
