NeBeLNeST 'Pillars Of Birth' from "Saalfelden 2007"


Abstrakt Baritone originates from a single baritone saxophone recording, used as the primary material to construct a sonic landscape that preserves the instrument’s physicality while completely shifting its identity. The original sound is treated as a living body: fragmented, filtered, thickened, and pushed to the edge of recognizability through glitch processes, unstable overlaps, and micro-interruptions that open the way to a new timbral topology.

The piece does not aim to imitate the instrument’s acoustics; instead, it extracts its deepest grain — the inner breath of the baritone, the reed’s roughness, the low-frequency air vibration — and brings it into an electronic space functioning as a distorting lens. Structures emerge from precise gestures, shaped in Max/MSP, where each transformation operates more like an incision than an effect, carving a dense and physical sonic matter.

The form unfolds as a process rather than a narrative: an organism growing through accumulation and rarefaction, built on internal tensions, dynamic contrasts, irregularities, and controlled noise inflections. Listening becomes a traversal of timbral states, always suspended between what still belongs to the baritone sax and what belongs only to its electronic shadow.

Abstrakt Baritone is an inquiry into the transformation of acoustic source material, the persistence of instrumental gesture within processed sound, and the possibility of creating a new sonic identity from a single breath of brass.

Often, when performing electronic music, we experience a completely different feeling than acoustic or traditional instrument musicians. The electronic medium is often deprived of a sense of being a “true instrument”. We may add hands-on control via an interface that could simulate and replace that sense of touch, but the connection with the actual sound generation is still a little thin.
For this piece, I chose to use a controller that could both be my interface with the computer and the acoustic source for those sounds and noises I wanted to process digitally, in an attempt to reunite the two actions into the one device.

dEN is DIY with a professional approach.

I decided to start mainly for selproduction issues but finally it turned out as a real production label.

We focus our activity on MUSIC with a special taste for Jazz/Impro and Avantgarde. Eclectic minds are appreciated.

dEN has a strong identity since the beginning. We designed our own original packaging made by the talented hands of Davide Soldarini.
We choose to deny all artworks and images in our projects because we realized that society is simply saturated by images in this era.

Beside the label activity, dEN is also a booking agency and, hopefully starting this spring, a Recording Studio based in San Bernardino, just few kilometers away from Novara – Italy.
