The light and dark, the fast and slow, the loud and quiet - one cannot exist without the other and opposing qualities, in balance, each bring out the best in life - and often also in music. Berlin-based artist Mareena embodies this interplay perfectly. May it be through her well-built Techno DJ Sets in Clubs all over the world or as Podcast host and Label Owner of the always calming and ever-giving UNRUSH series - Mareena understood the integration of this dualism like few other artists nowadays. A catch-up between Delayed and her was long overdue and our discussion expanded from the 90’ies, over timeless music to the challenges of the life of an artist these days.

This is what Mareena said about the mix:
'I had a lot of ideas for a calm mix. I ended up with a dub techno mix. A genre that is sticking with me since my beginnings. I can't get tired of chords and delays. Since your platform is called “Delayed” it seemed just appropriate ;) The mix is recorded between 115 – 120 BPM. I wanted to create something more chill. A mix you listen to while cooking, having friends over or wandering around the streets. My idea was a deeper psychedelic vibe rather than the usual dance floor music.'

For the next ep of Spectral Voices I invited @ohm-599575574, a mainstay of the Icelandic techno scene with over 20 releases on labels such as Thule records, Rawax, Kontakt, Solid Groove, Taped Artifact, Ranges, Vade mecum, Vuo records and AE Recordings which he co-ran with Octal Industries and Thor from Thule Records.

Now, Ohm runs his own imprint called 'Ohm Series', where he shines a light on a mixture of well-beloved veterans and some vibrant new names pushing techno's sonic boundaries. His integrity to the dub techno sound is the cornerstone of its operation.

I play for most of the first hour, then Ohm's mix starts from 53mins.

A unique blend from Spclnch’s secret music library is the work of Andrey Pushkarev.

In addition to various discoveries, the artefacts closet is filled with vinyl records, an impressive collection of which are also displayed along the whole wall. There is also a wide selection on the shelves behind the shoulders of these experienced diggers, literally and figuratively. It is for this reason that the habit of handling music well is formed. An example of such a skill was the respect paid by guests with particular accents. Of course, some guests are old but gold: the DP-6 duo, sophisticated by experience, accurately constructs sound textures, maestro Basicnoise again extracts tactile forms of dub techno, and Federsen shows exactness and attention to the details of the genre.

Edward's second album has just dropped via Giegling and has been met with critical acclaim for its constantly-changing direction and refreshingly hypnotic production. Offermann too is edging closer to releasing his second album, which should drop next year, and after his stellar 2012 debut in the form of 'Do Pilots Still Dream Of Flying?', we're suitably excited.

The two often play together and always bring a melancholic, warped and wholly-unique take on dance music. Seamlessly drifting between floaty, groove-fuelled house and intriguing side-winding techno, every set is completely different yet always the same.

We're thrilled to have the two compile an In Session mix for us and this is one of the most inventive hours we've ever received. Tracks by the illusive Prince of Denmark, Dj Qu and of course some off-kilter cuts will delve you deep into the pair's vision. Exceptional stuff.

1. How and where was the mix recorded?
I recorded the mix in Lisbon, my current home. It was a breeze selecting tracks from my collection, adding a touch of the city's vibrant energy to the mix.

2. Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

Sure! The idea behind the mix was to capture the essence of spring with a blend of new and unreleased tracks. I wanted to create a fresh and uplifting vibe that resonates with the blooming atmosphere of the season.

3. What are you up to next? Projects, ideas…

I'm thrilled about the upcoming release on Luck of Access, featuring the flawless work of my friend and incredible producer, Stojche. I had the pleasure of remixing one of his tracks, and I can't wait for everyone to hear it. Stay tuned.

4. Lastly, for you what is Dance, Shake, Swing!?

Haha, it's definitely an awesome journey that is accessible to everyone who wants it. The elevation of spirit and perfect rhythms for the feet!

Artist: Star_Dub [StarDub / OHM Series / Rawax / VUO Records / spclnch]

Our 11th Expedition takes us to the sonic planet of Matthias Schildger, and specifically his Star_Dub Alias. No Stranger to the scene, Matthias has been an artist that we have been huge admirers of for many years now. His Star_Dub releases very rarely leave our bags and are a stable in our vinyl mixes, anyone who has attended our Eastern Bloc parties will attest to this. To be able to welcome him to the Frontier is a honour for us. 

Matthias is a German DJ and producer based in Offenbach and co-founder of Mainrecords. He is an incredibly versatile artist with a whole host of alias’ that showcase his breadth and depth of sound. For this particular Frontier mix we requested one in the style of Star_Dub. Through this moniker he is able to explore all things deep and dubby whether that be techno or house.

Matthias Schildger's journey began at the age of 8 in 1995 when he was recording tapes of a German radio show, Hr3 Clubnight. By the age of 12, he made his first steps into music production, using a PlayStation to experiment with sounds. 

His unconventional approach yielded promising results, prompting him to delve deeper into music production. By 2006 he had released his debut record. During that year, Matt developed his style and separated it into many different aliases under which he plays and produces, such as Binary Operator, Star_Dub, CNTRL, Polyfan Polyphenix, or his real name Matthias Schildger.
