ABOUT THE RELEASE

It is a great pleasure to announce the return of this true Bristolian legend. Not that he was away, but Kristian Townsend, the man behind the name Alpha Proxima has been so busy creating amazing music with other projects (Akasha FX, Ways & Means, Kosheen), that his solo career has been put on a back burner. But you can not keep a creative artist away from his passion for a long time. We just knew that sooner or later some new Alpha Proxima songs will appear and we are extremely happy that they will do so on Filter. This brand new single finds Kristian in top form (not that we expected less). In a time when a great number of breaks producers turn to house and dubstep, it is good to hear there are still brave ones who keep the flame burning. The title track is a hands-in-the-air club anthem that sets the floor on fire, anywhere, anytime. The robotic bass parts work their magic over a hard hitting break and new elements are constantly introduced layer upon layer. The breakdowns are just in time to make the crowd beg for more. And the tune hits harder beat after beat. The Time Has Come continues on the route set by Deep Source, only this time it goes deeper, right to the place where breaks and techno meet in a specific and completely satisfying unity. An essential club weapon!


ABOUT THE ARTIST

Electronic music would not be what it is today if there wasn't a generation of brave open-minded artists from Bristol in the nineties. They were not afraid to experiment and didn't really care about genre definitions and their restrictions. They followed a strong artistic vision and created the so-called Bristol sound, which after that infected electronic music in general. Alpha Proxima (real name: Kristian Townsend) is definitely one of the people who performed a crucial role in the defining of the modern electronic sound. He was involved in different projects, alone or with various collaborators, but all of them share the originality and genuine love for music. He is currently working with Kosheen, Akasha FX and Ways & Means, but Alpha Proxima is a special solo project that goes way back to the nineties. Needless to say, it is determined to take the world of electronic music by storm.

If you've listened to Top 40 radio or flipped through the video channels during the past few years, odds are pretty good you know something about John Legend. He played piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything" and might as well be considered Kanye West's sidekick, having assisted the producer and MC on several sessions — Jay-Z's "Encore" and Slum Village's "Selfish" being two of the more prominent 2004 singles featuring his work. A former choir director, he has also released a handful of energetic live discs, some of which are credited to his less hubristic birth name, John Stephens. And though he claims "I've got something new," you've also heard substantial chunks of Get Lifted in records made decades ago by Sly & the Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Quincy Jones, and Bill Withers. This might not be a problem for listeners who crave anything that recalls the music they first heard in their youth, but Legend's over-reliance upon his inspirations is an impediment as much as a slick way to grab attention. That's because he has more than enough talent and charm to get by on his own. His own lyrics and hooks are unique and clever enough to get the point across that he's no everyday R&B artist and, just as importantly, he has a personable and instantly fetching voice you could listen to all day long. However, the association with West — whose Sony-distributed boutique label released the record — is very helpful. Without it, Legend would likely be zoned into neo-soul (2003's Live at SOB's New York City really makes this notion apparent), thereby standing little chance of reaching the ears of anyone younger than 30. The production work supporting his songs strikes a fine balance between soul and hip-hop, allowing him to appeal to those who are coming from either angle. This is a very good record. It's a given that Legend is destined to make at least two others that top it.

Dephicit & The Fritz - Do You Want To Jump? [FREE DOWNLOAD]

Mad Liberation is a collection of songs that I have been working on for the past year that ranged from mostly original compositions to varied sample work (retro vinyl recordings and new all original recordings); digital synthesis that took me weeks to master; to live instrumentation tediously and soulfully recorded by myself and some of my very good friends. 

This collection of noise - to me - became an album, a sound in a whole, an idea free from limits of thought and more an idea of the heart and soul. Mad Liberation is a piece of me that is representative of my past, breathes life into my present, and is a taste of the future. 

I don't have fancy recording equipment, amazing speakers, crazy keyboards, complicated sample packs, proper studio time, cutting edge midi controllers, or outboard mixing gear. 

What I do have is an endless imagination of the future/now, unrelenting will, constant fascination, and a heart that has no capacity to stop loving and trying. 

This business - when you boil it down - is not about the machine, but about the man. Even electronic music is humanistic. We breath life into these dead things to make them whisper and ROAR!! I am inspired by that fact, and this is what sets me free.
