Csound work from the fall of 1998. Otis was some big dumb dog that ran up to my wife and me in front of A Taste of India in the U district. Apparently he had ran away from the people watching him. The computer music course I was taking had lots of grad students naming their compositions 3 lower case words, like "still, further, quiet." So the full name of otis is "otis (comes running, stinking)."

The synthesis techniques were homecooked granular (at the beginning, which is a few tens of thousand of note events of little sine waves), FM, additive, and my own additive technique which modulates each partial with bandlimited noise.

Taken from their forthcoming third album, The Courage of Present Times (due for release via @GLOW365 on 24th March) we are pleased to present the premiere of Sonnymoon’s next single. Grains Of Friends is full of @Dirty-Projectors style vocals that dance over a series of clicks, claps, muffled basslines and field recordings that take us back to summertime playtimes. It's time to move to the groove.

Synonymous and Non-synonymous Harmonic Fields 

This work was composed for 2020 Melbourne Science Week, realised for modular synthesiser, it explores viral transmission through synonymous and non-synonymous mutation. As a virus infects a host and uses its cells to generate more viruses, the next generation of virus contains some remnant information from the host in its RNA. As a virus travels from host to host these changes in RNA create synonymous (very small) changes that have no significant impact on the structure (and destiny) of the virus.

However, very occasionally, or through interspecies zoonotic infection, very dramatic or non-synonymous changes can occur. By studying these changes scientists can model and predict when a virus might mutate. It is also highly likely that zoonotic transfer created COVI-2SARS, as non-synonymous changes were necessary to modify the spike protein and add a o-glycan shield, two incredible features no scientist would have predicted coming into being. Studying the RNA makes a case for the virus being a freak zoonotic occurrence and not human engineered or accelerated in a secret weapons lab. 

In this work, the virus and its interactions, are represented by self-oscillating, generative music synthesis.  The idea of the self-oscillating generative patch is to make the machine come alive. The patch, if left powered, will autonomously play until the electronic parts themselves wear out and fail. By the way, I still have a fully functional Roland analog synth from the 1970s, so synthesisers can have very long productive lifespans.  

This generative patch is based on the tradition of Krell patches, first inspired by musician Tod Barton (Bjørn & Meyer, Patch & Tweak; 2018 pp: 258). Typically a self-oscillating Krell patch randomly selects pitch and increases the speed of selection as pitch increases right throughout the musical range. The randomisation is represented by an analog electronic signal, which is then quantised (or staircase-d/stepped) into a discrete scale of pitches. The idea here is to echo RNA coding. I would like to use composer Trevor Wishart’s idea of clouds and streams of randomised notes forming a “harmonic field” so this is where that part of the title comes from. 

A chunk of the RNA harmonic field is then sampled and looped to form a bassline using another module, the electronic music equivalent of a cantus firmus. As the synthesiser I use just plays one note at a time, sampling a line and looping adds a driving rhythmic part to the harmonic field texture.
The bassline element can also be likened to a drone and this is intended to represent the main strain of the virus. It changes only ever so often (only three times in this work) as a result of extreme pressure or zoonotic interactions (keep reading).

Why analog synthesisers? Analog electronic control signals are super fast and responsive compared with status quo music industry software and MIDI synthesisers. They also afford their parameters to be tweaked, continuously creating subtle and exciting changes. Tweaking the parameters creates a flow through performance and the music is a recording of a live performance. 

Analog control signals are also super fascinating as they can be combined in many ways. In this work I have mixed my own body’s muscle electric signal called the electromyogram, which increases the flow of events and the chance of non-synonymous mutations within the circuit conditions. This transference of human bioelectricity into the electronic synthesis animal sometimes results in large structural changes, producing a new randomised bassline or main strain. This musical structure is intended to reflect the theories behind the origin and evolution of viruses including COVI2-SARS and HIV.
