We believe that « everything is a remix »

Remixes are a major part of the electronic music history. The club culture took off on remixes, some of the greatest dance hits where made from remixing original tracks.
Our primary purpose is to highlight this exercise by offering the opportunity to artists to either work on a remix of their choice or offer a track to be remixed by an artist they admire. It is overseen and curated by independent music lovers and supported by The Absolut Company, a brand that is permanently involved in the field of contemporary arts and creation with a tradition of supporting artists such as Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. The Absolut Remix project is dedicated to the art of combining or editing existing materials, to produce something new.

As a start, every last Friday of the month, we will unveil a new remix, from a newcomer or a legend, from disco to techno or IDM and house music. And more to come...

Life's Track - Stone (Ricardo Tobar Absolut Remix)

Jon Gurd’s Birth Right EP is the first material from the Portsmouth Techno producer in more than 2 years since his ventures on Octopus recordings, 8 Sided Dice and Quartz. The EP therefore indicates an audible step change not just in the approach to production but also in the mindset and feeling behind each layer and texture. Having emerged unscathed from a traumatic family related drama Jon communicates a tortuous and re-evaluated life message across all 3 tracks, and is dedicated to his brother with a hidden meaning conveying “Tomorrow Is - Promised - To No One”.  

Dissecting the EP the educated are blessed with field recordings, analogue rumbling and modular synthesis exiting from almost 24 months of lab driven experimentation. No real process has been applied or extant formulae followed other than Birth Right captures what Jon “feels” innately rather than what the industry wants, therefore the journey, endless noise making and experimentation gives a balanced and exciting offering. Jon comments “seriously my process for producing this has been all over the place, literally stumbling across shit, slipping over my own creative vomit, workflow went out the studio window on day one”. Having spent two years asking himself why he makes music, I think on first listen of Birth Right EP we will all begin to understand why… Remixes kindly provided by Messrs Dave Clarke and Ancestral Voices (new project from Liam Blackburn, formerly Indigo and 1/2 of Akkord).

The birth of Ancestral Voices represents a new path for an established and highly respected producer with forthcoming material due on Samurai Music. Liam Blackburn carved out a singular musical voice as Indigo, and also more recently as half of acclaimed Houndstooth signing Δkkord. Inevitably a new approach to creating music has developed into a new identity; seeping with textures, loaded with taut energy and sacred geometric presence that echoes shamanism and transformative life experiences. Stripping back an already unique creative process proved a challenge that has paid off, and Blackburn's evolving sound has no immediate sonic comparison. With distinct resonances of his musical heritage flowing through a more mature filter, there is a mystical atmosphere that resonates as you hear Ancestral Voices emerge triumphantly into the world.

With 4 releases under their belt and more to follow, it clearly shows the alliance between Hunter/Game and the Icelandic band Kura, can do no wrong. Their band, Landside, is now primed to get an accompanying remix EP following up from ‘Signs of Change’ and ‘Desert Lake’.

Drawing their inspiration from a cumulation of music that inspires them, they call up a diverse selection of artists to the task, which present an astonishingly coherent vision. From the stormy modulated chords of Robert Hood and trickling pads crafted by Etapp Kyle, to the dystopian narratives expressed by Bambounou and Edanticonf, the re-visionings provide additional star-power to what is already a fine, shimmering series.

This is the one track from the EP which we couldn’t resist putting a 4 to the floor drum pattern over.  The percussion samples give a bit of clock ticking feel (actually a pitched sample of a door closing with loads of pitched side stick samples) and seemed to inspire the rising and falling cyclic melodic parts. The plodding kick pattern seemed more than enough to keep it all moving.
