Father comes home every evening. Looking so debonair. He puts I Love Lucy on the TV set and lies around in his underwear. Empty beer cans strewn about. It’s the antithesis of Better Homes and Gardens. He lights up another cigarette and inhales the hydrocarbons. And he scratches his belly and he says to himself life is good I should feel blessed. But there’s a twinge of pain in his stomach and lately work has got him stressed.

I’m glad I wasn’t around in 1952. I’d rather living here in the present with you. The old people reminisce about all the things they miss.  I’m glad I wasn’t around in 1952.  
Mother has her hair up in curlers. As she cleans up the household mess. And when her husband comes home tonight she’ll greet him in a pretty dress. She reads good housekeeping diligently looking for the latest advice. But sometimes she feels like a character who’s living in a fool’s paradise. And  she’s striving for an ideal that is impossible to achieve. And there’s an itch that she keeps on scratching but there’s no way to relieve.

Nice houses in the suburbs.  Bomb shelters in every backyard.  People driving their American built gas guzzlers down the boulevard.

Junior wears his coonskin cap and he likes to shoot his BB gun. He used to play cowboys and Indians but now fighting communists is more fun. At school the kids practice duck and cover so they can survive the H bomb. In ten more years if he survives he’ll be fighting off in Vietnam. And sometimes he has nightmares where he dreams about the start of world war three. Cause lately it feels like he might be living through the end of history.

I’m glad I wasn’t around in 1952. I’d rather living here in the present with you. It may have been good for some. But not for everyone. I’m glad I wasn’t around in 1952.

Hergy: the Relaticle

My first patch exploring the Blukac Endless Processor module to create intertwining drones. The endless processor resynthesises audio you feed into the inputs to create infinitely sustained sounds.

In this case, I ran my single-stringed Diddleybow through the BoredBrain Injectr with a little bit of drive and the cab sim enabled and captured different notes and timbres into each layer to build up a droning chord in each of the two channels. Channel volume is being modulated by the Instruo Ochd and Ochd expander to create movement.

The Endless processor's outputs are routed through the Make Noise QPAS stereo filter with resonance set to 40%. Cutoff frequency is also modulated by the Ochd with a slow LFO. Smile pass outputs are then routed into the Intellijel Sealegs to add some reverb and vinyl crackle.

I thought I'd experiment with the BoredBrain Injectr's envelope follower, so I routed that to the QPAS's mystery input so whenever I pluck the diddleybow, a short envelope triggers a filter ping of sorts to create the underwater bubble sounds.

I started playing around with digital music creation in my early twenties, but I have always been haunted by a quote from Theo Parrish who said that he is "not comfortable with convenience replacing artistry", meaning that you need to put effort into learning and mastering the skills in order to bring something good. I studied computer science and have a passion for logics and programming and somehow my lack of any musical background has kept me from publishing any of my works.

Many years later I got inspired by an interview with Thomas Fehlmann where he explained how the focus in his work is not on the result so much but on the process itself. How the process is a "source of expression" and something he just feels he has to do. This resonated with me and I realised that it's ok to be an autodidact in music and it's ok to make music just for the sake of making music. I make music for me and if you, dear listener, like it along the way I'm very happy about that.

I am inspired by nature, natural processes and the interaction we have with them. Organic asymmetric fractal patterns that are rooted in logic but unpredictable as they express. How a particular stormy night can affect the shape and growth of a plant for years to come.

I use Bitwig Studio to create my tracks.
