Music For A Summer Party

Ohhhhh where do I begin? @myceliumfest was incredible. I arrived with my sister Nissa at 11, and we made our way to the pool, people were lounging, and it was quiet aside from the sound of a light breeze and people preparing for a connection workshop in a nearby tent. I didn't know exactly what I wanted to play, but I immediately felt that a downtempo set might be perfect to kick off the day, allow people to find their way into a groove, careful not to startle anyone who had a big one the night before. I was honored to be a part of such a special weekend and to contribute the sounds I love to help spark a vibe. Judging by the way I saw everyone grooving, I feel like it worked. Thank you to Ashlyn for inviting me to play and to Frazer for facilitating sound all weekend long. Of course a massive thanks to everyone who danced with me on this special Friday, I'm so grateful for your smiles and boogies.

Viva Mexico!!! I am so grateful to be able to share the music I love with people in such an incredible new city. This was my first trip to San Miguel De Allende; a stunning historic city considered the heart of Mexico. In the Queen of Spain's horse stalls, the flickering of the revolution began, and generations later, the vibrant city is still celebrating. 
This set was played in a bright courtyard for over six hours to a beautiful crowd of new and old friends. It was an ethereal drifting vibe that slowly grew into a sweaty electric dance party. 
Thank you to Paul and Traction Sound (my favorite sound system I've ever played on) and to Pam, Sofia, Mariana and the rest of the Alchemist crew as well as the beautiful Amapoula Cafe. Te Amoo!!!

DERSU - Live at Alchemist Souls Bazar - San Miguel De Allende (Part 2)

Imagine for a moment that you're 19 years old.

You're living at home with your parents to save money. You're going to a tech school and have a few part-time jobs.

Life is really good. You have a beautiful partner you love and a solid group of friends.

Then, one humid July evening, a clean-shaven man in a dark green uniform stands on your doorstep. You can see him through the screen door as he adjusts his jacket. For a moment, the cicadas and the music playing in the kitchen are all you can hear. 

You hold your breath. Then he knocks.

One morning in August, I walked into the kitchen with a bunch of audio recording equipment and a plan to capture a few stories. But, instead, what bloomed was a tale I'll never forget, how a record in the mail transformed how a platoon overseas perceived the war they were fighting and their outlook on the support back home.

A podcast featuring my dad, Douglas Rhodes, and a bunch of amazing musicians, including Jimmy Hendrix, The White Buffalo, Joni Mitchell, and more.

DERSU - MYCELIUM FESTIVAL 2023  -  3:45pm Saturday at the Oasis

It's one a.m. on Friday night, and I'm sitting on the floor in a beautiful massive teepee at Mycelium Festival. A fire warms the center of the space, and friends are circled around, lying on blankets and pillows as the Serendipity Tea Lounge serves tea, and it's such a viiiiibe.

I have no idea where we are going to go. I don't know what I'm going to play. I close my eyes and let the music take us.

My set from Sunday night's fireside cuddle puddle in Mexico, celebrating the wild child Vinny Olympio.

Ohhhhhh, baby. This Topanga meadow is one of the most beautiful places I have ever played in. Shadowed by gorgeous ancient oaks and circled by Red-Tailed Hawks, it was hard not to feel uplifted and inspired from the first moment I pressed play. My third year playing at Mycelium started smooth and mellow, and as people started to dance, it blossomed into a playful, sexy dance party. 

This set might be perfect for a pool party or a hang that you want to begin chill and slowly build into an arms-high celebration. Expect some live harmonica, funky Afrobeat, sprinkles of disco, and even some folk! 

Thank you, Mycelium, and the beautiful creatures that joined me in this meadow dance. I love you all so much and am so grateful to share this music with you.

With love from Ojai where I recorded this on a sunny Sunday dreaming of being with all of you by the pool. Special shout out to Creamy for some of the epic old school tracks.

This party was so damn sexy. It was an honor to play for such a vibey crowd that was so down to get down. It's been a little while since I played such a solid party, and I felt at home, back with the Elementum family in my old Venice stomping ground. This set was improvised based on the energy of the room. It started melodic and upbeat, then quickly got booty bumping, before shifting into a downtempo seascape. It ended with a full-on striptease moment where some very sexy friends got downnnnn, leaving us craving to activate our freak.

DERSU: ELEMENTUM - 2025 PRE BURN PARTY - VENICE

This mix is inspired by the incredible journey that was Burning Man 2015. It's essentially a story, told through music, that begins slow and builds into a climactic late night dust storm, perched high on top of an art car named Joule.

It's a thank you to the artists who influenced it: Acid Pauli, Oceanvs Orientalis, Goldcap, Sabo, Deep Jesus, Bedouin, Atish, Yokoo, the list goes on...

I fell in love with so many moments and was fueled by so many special people this year, whether it was Hugo dancing next to us on the top of Joule, or our new Brazilian friends from Sao Paulo greeting us after our set at Pink Mammoth, or our London friends who danced with us for hours at Salty's, each and every one of you are a part of this set. You come in the form of horns, or flutes, or deep, eerie synth. You are beautiful, mysterious, and alive. 

As you listen I truly hope you find yourself dancing, with your eyes closed, reminded of your own incredible journey...

The fresh prints of a large cat's paw could be distinctly seen on the muddy path. When we had passed here before, there had been no tracks on the path. I remembered that very well. The tracks pointed towards us—clearly the animal had been following on our heels.

This set is dedicated to the tribes around the world who are taking a stand for their traditions, their people and the earth. 

As I recorded this set in the warmth of my home, my heart ached for the people of Standing Rock being sprayed with water cannons in freezing temperatures, for the Lakota elders with soaked feet chanting in the night, yet they stand peacefully as the first nations have done for centuries.

It's easy to feel angry and disconnected, especially when we are alone fighting for a cause. But through art, our voice is heard. The intelligent, creative, driven youth on this planet have the power to replace the old guard.

It is time for us to take a stand together.

"The Bookshelf" is a bookshelf in my house. I have cdj's set up in there wired into Serato and it has become my creative haven. I will go into the room for hours trying out different mixes and sometimes some magic happens. 

This set was recorded in one two hour take and I'm so happy with how it turned out. I imagined playing to a rocking crowd late at night and I could almost hear the whistling as some of the tracks revealed themselves.

No matter where I am when I play tracks with sounds from this continent people really start to dance. There seems to be something about the music from this part of the world that connects deep within us.

This set is an homage to Africa. Not all of the songs are made there, but they seem to speak the language of this region. There are also samples taken from a trip Dean took recently to Kenya that are woven into the set. I hope this hour set takes you on your perfect journey.

"I was the first set of the day at one of my favorite places in the world, Pink Mammoth on a Saturday in Black Rock City.

Throughout the week I had found myself searching for ways to top past years which left me chasing expectations and this set seemed to be another illustration of this idea. Previous years my friend Kenny and I had played Pink Mammoth to a packed dance floor as https://soundcloud.com/peaceinnoise, but this year he wasn't there, and neither was a big crowd. At first, I was disappointed, craving that energy, but as I closed my eyes and focused on the music, I felt a smile form on my face. It didn't matter how many people were with me on this morning, and even if there was one person in their tent grooving as they woke, that wasn't any less important.  

Thank you #burningman for not giving me what I asked for and instead what I needed. Than you Zach, Tim Green and the Pink Mammoth sound guy for your warm greeting and giving me the opportunity to be a be a small part of your camp this year.

Thank you also to anyone who rode by smiling and grooving on your bike, and the group of new friends who ended up joining me on the dance floor."

DERSU — DRIFT

A set by @dersurhodes inspired by the life of our little Bitu, a kitten who only stayed a short while but managed to change our lives forever. 

Here is a description of the set:
00:00 - Bitu comes into our life as a five-month-old kitten rescued from a shelter, bringing so much youthful energy into the house. I am intrigued but frustrated with the change and having to take care of him instead of focus on work and music. We nickname him shitstorm and we have to put sticky tape on all our furniture.
06:50 - I start to fall in love with him as we get to understand his personality.
13:30 - We're having so much fun when suddenly one night after he eats, instead of playing, he goes and lays down under the table and a darkness sets in.
16:40 - We spend two weeks going back and forth from the vet, as his health starts to deteriorate. I have a hard time focusing at work as I try to understand what is happening with him.
20:00 - The vet believes he may have the FIP virus, an incurable disease that affects young kittens. I start to accept the fact that we might lose him.
25:00 - He starts to eat less and less and his stomach grows swollen with fluid from the virus. 
31:00 - We fall deeper in love with him as we watch him fight and somehow still lay in the sun and play with us. He's so sweet and such a trooper, powering through and making us laugh constantly. At times I feel like he could be turning around.
40:00 - He stops eating, except for an occasional minnow. He lays under the bed and keeps his eyes closed. I tell him how much I love him and how grateful we are for having him in our home. We start to discuss our options as we see how much pain he is in.
50:00 - We plan a dinner to celebrate his last night with us. Bitu has grown so skinny and can barely eat so we have made the decision to have a vet come to send him on his way in the morning. We make him a fresh Coho Salmon and he eats the whole thing. We fall asleep with him on the couch with him in our arms. 
57:00 - We say goodbye to him as he lies in Kari's arms. His eyes stay locked on mine, they are big and confused. Finally, they start to soften and for the first time in weeks, he is free of pain. We kiss his head once more before he leaves us. 
1:00:00 - He drifts away finally at peace, purring as he travels home.

DERSU - RISE

Today we welcome a true storyteller behind the Schirmchendrink counter: DERSU honors Schirmchendrink with his sensational cocktail named “Between the Sheets”!

It was many months back when we got in contact and first listened one of DERSU’s sets. This one was called Africa. As fans of beautifully crafted DJ mixes it was clear that we wanted him on the show.  

DERSU is a creative mastermind telling stories trough film, animation, design, and music. His career led him from sports apparel design to art, film and music. He discovered his passion for the latter as creator of Witness This, an art and culture magazine. 

His most recent projects include NightCause, a monthly dance party on the West side of L.A. where 100% of the proceeds are donated to charity, and, Wish You Were Here, a daytime party series in Venice Beach. He also is one half of the duo Peace in Noise.

Between the Sheets covers many emotions and moods, it's deep and taps into a more industrial and minimal berlin sound, with touches of spiritual and also very heart filling anthems near the end. 

You can literally tap into the emotions as it’s reflecting DERSU’s personal journey as of lately: challenging, scary, dark while also being incredibly beautiful, expansive and light.

What seems to be the most evident to me is that we are all connected, and to think that the sickness our planet was experiencing wouldn't affect us is naive. This is a time for her to heal and for us to go inward. To stop doing so much, and instead to listen.
