Last year was the first time I DJ’ed at Garbicz. I instantly fell in love with the place, the people, the forest, the magnificent vibe. What a festival! You can imagine how thrilled I was to play there again this year – on my favorite floor of the festival, with a beautiful time slot.  

On Saturday morning at 8AM, I opened Buk Corner’s infamous cocktail bar. You could see the sun rise over the lake. Soon enough, people came pouring in from all corners of the festival. It was heartwarming to see many of my Dutch and German friends supporting me from the start. Some had partied all night, others had set their alarm clock to hear my set. Ain’t that dedication? 

As a DJ, I like to take people through different sounds and styles. Thanks to the open-mindedness and party-mindedness of Garbicz’s seasoned ravers, I was able to take the dance floor along on this journey. I hope the vibe of this most magical morning is captured in the recording. Enjoy.

Making my return to the Playa for the sixth time held special meaning for me as it does every year. However I see Burning Man like lovers. You can't compare them, they're uniquely different experiences. And just like the complexity of lovers, my Burn was magical, beautiful, intense, emotional, intoxicating, lustful, serendipitous, mesmerizing, and yes, sometimes just a pain in the ass.

Still, after all these years, it's my favorite thing on the planet! Playing on the bus is beyond an honor. Sharing my music and reciprocating energy from that perspective with the open canvas and unparalleled conditions is an indescribable feeling. What I'm trying to say is, it all comes from the Heart.

art: Soup Flavored Blankets 

Soup Flavored Blankets creates a welcoming and interactive space dedicated to the chilly, wandering souls of deep playa. Within the walls of our cracker box, participants will experience a rag tag team of Burners providing delectable hot soups, steaming libations and cozy blankets equipped with a convenient soup/beverage pouch. Playa wanderlust exists within all of us and Soup Flavored Blankets is your rejuvenation station along the way.
We're a multifarious crew of friends from Los Angeles, Reno, Chicago and New York who share a passion for soup and service. The SFB story stems from a brief moment many, many years ago, far beyond Black Rock City's Esplanade, on a frigid deep playa evening. There, gazing at the brothtaking sky and discussing the soupernatural, sat our founder, Noodles and his brother, Max. Although initially vibrant and jovial, their topic of discussion soon shifted to the bitter cold air and a desire for simple pleasures.

"I could sure go for a blanket right now. You know, warm me up from the outside in." Max remarked as he shivered in the deepest of deep playa.

"I could go for a bowl of soup to warm me up from the inside out!" Noodles replied.
Now what followed may be the worst idea ever uttered as Max suggested: "How about a bowl of blanket flavored soup?"
In a harsh tone, Noodles replied: "That's sounds disgusting! Who want's to eat soup that tastes like blankets!?"
Hours passed and their situation worsened. But suddenly, a dusty thought shot out of the Man's neon head, blew across the playa, swirled around the temple walls and shot directly into Noodles's noggin as an idea of spectacular brilliance.
"Some Soup Flavored Blankets, now that would be warmly delicious!" He proclaimed.
Max agreed! And the two brothers jumped to their feet, crossed the cold desert floor and returned to camp to procrastinate for seven years.
As veteran burners we understand the significance of your trash fence quest and the sometimes difficult elements you encounter. Soup Flavored Blankets is a warm soupy refuge and our gift to the many wandering souls of Burning Man.

No matter where I am when I play tracks with sounds from this continent people really start to dance. There seems to be something about the music from this part of the world that connects deep within us.

This set is an homage to Africa. Not all of the songs are made there, but they seem to speak the language of this region. There are also samples taken from a trip Dean took recently to Kenya that are woven into the set. I hope this hour set takes you on your perfect journey.

Witchtape #58 | Guest Wizards : Missfeat

(Story continued from Witchtape #56)

Finally, after spending one night in the African rain forest in the loving presence of all sorts of exotic animals and trees, the little witch sensed that the time was finally right to fly the last mile to the village in the nearby clearing… the home village of her soon-to-be-husband wizard and – of course – her future parents-in-law.  The girl was very nervous, but not because of the prospect of meeting her in-laws but simply because the village was full of people, while so far the biggest crowd the solitary girl had ever seen, consisted of 3 witches, including herself.  
Soon afterwards the girl started flying at a gentle pace towards the village, which seemed deserted (the wizard had instructed the villagers to stay indoors in order not to unsettle their airborne guest).  The witch calmed down a bit when she saw a giant baobab tree in the middle of the village.  With a graceful movement, she touched down at the foot of the tree.  Immediately after her feet hit the ground, she heard some children erupting in cheers in the nearby building with a thatched roof, and soon afterwards she saw 8 schoolgirls getting out of the wooden building and running towards the witch while cheering enthusiastically.  They immediately hugged the European witch warmly and touched her pale-white skin as well as her incredibly soft long brown hair, which was not curly like their own hair.  The little girls were all between 7 and 10 years old.  They were all black, yet they had all distinctly different colors and appearances.  The witch felt a strong energy flowing back and forth during the group hug… she had never felt so much love.  Visibly the 8 children were all witches-in-the-making.
After a few minutes, the witch saw an elderly couple walking out of the school building.  The 8 girls all became quiet when they saw their school principals approaching.  
They explained that in the course of the last couple of years, the 8 girls had all by themselves found the way to this village from the 8 different corners of Africa, and after arriving they all said that they wanted to become a witch and protect the rain forests of the continent.  But actually nobody in the village knew exactly what they needed to teach these girls to become a witch, but they sensed a solution would appear out of the blue in due time.  So the elders of the villages, started teaching the kids about the plants and animals of the forest, and also about medicinal brews as well as the delicate celestial energies of the sun, the moon and the stars.  It soon became clear that all the 8 girls had a special mystic bond with the animals of the surrounding forest, and quite often one of the kids slipped out of the village to spend some time in the wilderness, where the friendly animals took care of them before bringing them back to the village at dusk time…
