The Same Type

‘Love Songs Over Dope Beats’ started as a concept project initiated in 2021. I reached a new level of musical awareness and was inspired in a few ways to retry my self-felt talents in writing music over instrumentals. As many occurrences in life, my dream and vision underperformed against my difficulties with EXECUTIVE FUNCTION, or as I like to call, DYSFUNCTION. 

As I attempt to create a new space from a new shelf in life, it felt intuitive and comforting (for the first time) to release the feelings of needing something to be perfect or up to par in order to release to the public. My goals were to professionally record a lot of these tracks in a studio with a clean sound. These tracks were recorded in the voice memo app to serve as a reminder so I wouldn’t ‘FORGET THE FLOW’ when I got to the studio. I never made it to the studio.. 

Fast forward to 2025.. I made an impulsive decision to move forward and act on the intuition to release, and let go, and be okay with it, without regret. The time is now and it took years on years of growth to even be able to sit with the idea of posting something ‘under quality’. I remind myself that this is for the LOVE OF ART, which has no rules, and that one of my greatest strengths in life is being vulnerable..

Most of these tracks are written, except for the ones labeled ‘ freestyle ‘, which are always completely off the dome. 

Stick around for the new sound coming, hopefully sooner than later.. that I literally just created all this space for.. let’s see how the EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING goes! ;)

What these songs have in common is LOVE, secondary is that they are WRITTEN, rather than FREESTYLES such as the EP titled, ‘Freestyles About Love’, which recordings all took place during the month of February in 2022. 

This EP, ‘Love Songs Over Dope Beats’, features the evolution of Adriel Flows as the music artist, among various personas. This project features work from the years 2009-2025.

“Smoke on the Last Goodbye” is a slow-burn R&B meditation on endings that don’t explode but evaporate. From the opening lines, the song situates itself in a nocturnal, intimate space—“velvet shadows,” fading footsteps, and “whiskey stains on wounded time” evoke a room heavy with memory, where the damage has already been done and the truth is settling in quietly rather than arriving with confrontation.

The central imagery of smoke functions as both presence and disappearance. Smoke lingers, distorts vision, and refuses to be grasped—mirroring how the relationship ends not with clarity or closure, but with ambiguity and emotional residue. Promises don’t shatter; they “let go.” The goodbye is not abrupt, but slow, drifting, and suffocating in its softness.

Verse 1 frames betrayal as subtle rather than violent. “Soft betrayal dressed in night” and “quiet lie” suggest deception without drama—perhaps avoidance, emotional withdrawal, or unspoken truths rather than overt wrongdoing. The ashes falling “like truth we can’t deny” imply that what remains after love burns out is honesty stripped of illusion, arriving too late to save anything.

The pre-chorus turns inward. “I taste the echoes that you hide” blends sensory language to show how the narrator absorbs what was never said. Love’s “darker side” here isn’t cruelty; it’s concealment, emotional withholding, and the slow corrosion of intimacy. This makes the pain more haunting—nothing screams, yet everything hurts.

The chorus anchors the song emotionally. Its repetition reinforces the idea of being stuck in the moment of departure, replaying it over and over. “Silk in the silence, cruel and low” is a key contradiction: the goodbye is gentle, even beautiful, but precisely that softness makes it more devastating. There is no fight to justify the end, no villain to blame—only a quiet release that leaves the narrator alone with the aftermath.

Verse 2 deepens the emotional crime-scene metaphor. The “blue” shadow and “crime-scene heart” suggest emotional damage examined after the fact, as if the narrator is revisiting the relationship like evidence. “Broken records spin the ache” reinforces circular grief—the same memories replaying, the same questions unanswered, the same loss rehearsed.

The outro completes the dissolution. Curtains close “without a sound,” confessions fall unheard, and footsteps blur into the sky rather than walking away clearly. Smoke doesn’t clear; it dissolves. The goodbye isn’t resolved—it fades. This ending reinforces the song’s central truth: some relationships don’t end with closure, only with absence.

Overall, “Smoke on the Last Goodbye” carries a restrained, mournful tone—sensual, introspective, and emotionally heavy without being melodramatic. It captures the particular pain of endings where love dies quietly, leaving behind atmosphere instead of answers, and where the hardest part isn’t the loss itself, but how slowly it settles into the soul.
