A few days ago I've known the writer Vasken Berberian and his so interesting book with title "Under An Indifferent Sky".
After that meeting I've written in my musical diary this piece.
I hope you enjoy, both music and book :-)

UNDER AN INDIFFERENT SKY  (in italian: SOTTO UN CIELO INDIFFERENTE)

“You’ve left your dreams behind
You’ve lost your past
And yet what you’ve lived through sometimes comes back to haunt you…”
 
Perhaps it’s not true that time helps us to forget.
At least it isn’t true for Mikael, a brilliant and rebellious youth in the Venice of
the Fifities. He does remember little of his Armenian childhood, and yet vivid images
stubbornly haunt his dreams and thoughts. Adopted by a wealthy and powerful family,
his head filled with books and ideals, his heart beating for Francesca, Mikael knows an
unsolved issue hides in his past. And sooner or later he will have to face up to it. The
issue has a name: Gabriel. A brother Mikael has never known. Because after their birth,
far away in Patras, Greece, something awful happened, and their father was forced to
make a decision he will regret for the rest of his life.
Thirty years later, travelling to Canada, Mikael comes close to unveiling all the
painful and troubling truths lurking in his past, thanks to the fortuitous finding of
some photographs, and to the encounter with a mysterious woman, a stranger he has
actually always known. She takes him on a revealing journey, all the way to Russia and to
the heart of the story of his lost family.
From Venetian calli to turn-of-the-century Greece to Russian Gulags, and with
rare sensitivity, Vasken Berberian weaves a subtle tapestry of feelings, memories and
suspended lives, on the enchanting and moving backdrop of the Mediterranean and
the icy seas of distant Siberia. And, at the same time, he provides a powerful narrative
– as wide as the sky, its indifferent gaze contemplating the actions of men and the fates
of peoples – depicting a century of history, and deeply moving us from the very first,
gripping pages onwards.

Nocturnes are dark, melancholic virtual love songs full of pathos and longing. Each one feels like an intimate soliloquy about unrequited love, heartbreak and desire.

Inspired by Chopin's masterpieces of this genre, Phil explores a more contemporary approach, mixing in jazz, blues, pop and filmic elements.
