Poker Flat Recordings keeps up its prodigious release schedule with another superb EP - this time by scene statesmen Gorge and Markus Homm. Gorge (aka Pit Waldmann) is the co-owner of 8bit Records, originally from Mannheim and has carved a singular niche for himself over the past 20-odd years. Similarly. Markus Homm has been deeply influential in developing the scene in his native Romania, and is now working alongside the Poker Flat regular Mihai Popoviciu.

With this EP Gorge and Markus Homm have merged their many talents and honed two tracks of depth and weight. 'Holos' is a tightly wound slice of superior tech house, textured and layered with lush chords and a thick lower end.

'Glint' also showcases the duo's mutual understanding of the dynamics of the dance floor - a slick groove is enhanced and expanded via subtle and effective melodic elements, including a pinch of acidic 303 sounds.

The smart and charming Berlin based producer Phonique (Michael Vater) returns with his second album!
„Good Idea“ is a twinkling rainbow, teeming with positive vibes and breathing the cosmopolitan creativity of a widely travelled mind.
The common ground of the close to thirty tracks (if you count the bonus CD) is the kind of modernity in Phonique‘s music which doesn‘t deny it‘s roots, but reflects a new, urban feel which has seldom been so successfully displayed.Although „Good Idea“ can be described as modern electronic music in the broadest sense, it‘s difficult to pigeonhole the album as it combines so many influences, ranging from Deep- to Electro-House, from Nu-Disco to HipHop, from Lounge to Minimal and Techno to Pop.
Phonique and his production partner Alex Krüger prove their outstanding versatility without sounding arbitrary. Every tune is well thought out, but still sounds fleet-footed and unbelievably fresh. Handplayed instruments like guitars and pianos fit smoothly in the soundscape adding a good portion of vitality.

The Pop-moments of the album are obvious enough to grab your immediate attention, but subtle enough to grant a longer and repeated listening pleasure that lets you discover more layers and aspects of the music.
Phonique managed to gather an array of illustrious guest musicians, mainly vocalists, around him. The album features the talents of well reputed artists like Erlend Øye (Whitest Boy Alive, Kings Of Convenience), Richard Davis, Ian Whitelaw, Shadee and Rodney Hunter of Aphrodelics, Data MC and Marc Hype as well as top electronic producers like Steve Bug, Gui Boratto, Vincenzo, Zoo Brazil, Badmouth (Mazi & Cass) and fresh talents such as Ruben or Liora.

The collaboration highlights of the album include „Casualities“ (feat. Erlend Øye) which merges uplifting airiness with melancholy in the distinctive Erlend way, the soulful „Worked It Out“ (feat. Ian Whitelaw and Meitz) and the powerful „Computer Kidz“ (feat. Shadee). But the flow of the entire album makes it difficult to pick out just a few tracks.

On the second, bonus CD (limited edition), you‘ll find the more dancefloor-dedicated facet of Phonique‘s creativity in a homogeneous and highly dynamic mix by Phonique. Another twelve all new Phonique tracks fall into place perfectly, ranging from deeper to Electro to more minimal and techy House tracks. The mix reflects the uniquely dynamic of a Phonique DJ set.

„Good Idea“ is definitely a strong musical statement, but not in a loudmouthy way. The album is fresh, inspiring and innovative without claiming to reinvent the wheel. It‘s a masterpiece by a sympathatic Berlin producer to make your summer a little nicer.

DJ/Producer and label-owner, Tom Flynn has built an eventful career and a solid foot in the electronic music scene, developed at an early age as a child of musically engaged parents, and sustained by the love affair he got himself involved in from thereon in. The English space nerd, apart from being talented at all fronts of being an electronic music artist, breathes charisma and beams an easy-going sense of humor. Torture the Artist catches up with Tom on a typical day as a multi-tasker, days before his new track, 'Pluck' is released on Steve Bug's label Dessous. He imparts some promising news about future projects as well as some introspective tidbits on balancing life as an artist without compromising personal style and sense of self.

3 QUESTIONS to TOM FLYNN:

Q: Your mix is a journey from the past to the present. What do these older tracks still mean to you?

A: They symbolise important moments in my life, times where they made me really appreciate the power and emotion of music and how it can transcend anything. I have to say this is one of the best mix ideas i’ve been asked to do. I knew some of the tracks I would select and I've been keeping some in mind the last few weeks. I tried to go from the earliest up to the last few years, it’s impossible to get in all you want but the records I've chosen have always stood out for me and hold a special place in my heart.

Q: At the end of your set you´re representing your latest release. Please tell us more about.

A: I wrote those tracks a long time ago, one of them I wrote about 3 or 4 years ago, but i knew I liked them. I forgot about them for a while, then I was going through some tracks and found them, I took them with me on holiday and I thought ok I like these, especially pluck. Later that night I saw a flyer for Steve Bug on a wall, he was playing and I thought ok I should send them him, he might like them. The Pluck track I think was really influenced by me listening to a lot of electronic jazz at the time, I like making things that are out of time, things that don’t really make sense. The other 2 tracks were tracks I’d wrote a while back and I just liked them, they’re not like the stuff I’m writing now but they spoke to me in some fashion, and with Steve saying he liked them I thought ok that’s cool, I respect Steve and that means a lot so lets do it. 

Q: Which further projects are coming in 2018?

A: I have an EP on Carl Craigs label, Planet e, as well as something coming on Maceo Plex’s label, we’re just deciding if it will be Ellum or Lone Romantic. There’s also another track on a Fabric compilation I’ve just signed which nobody has heard yet. I’m hoping to release more on my own label, Into Orbit, later this year too. I’m sitting on a lot of new music!

Q: Your mix is a journey from the past to the present. Why did you pick these tracks?

A: This mix is more a journey from the past to the present and back again. But to be honest, I haven chosen more tracks from the past, which are in my eyes kinda timeless. I just love every single track and I played all of them regulary in my sets over the last 15 years. I also tried to showcase different musically styles which could work together in pure harmony.

Q: You´ve recently released your album "Paradise Sold" together with Steve Bug. How do you both usually team up in the studio for common productions?

A: We usually meet at Steves studio and then just see what happens. We build things up from the scratch. Our ideas often match perfectly, that´s why we have a great workflow and a lot of fun making music together.

Q: After the album release, what´s coming later in 2018?

A: There is another longplayer in the pipeline. I sadly can´t speak about it right now as it´s still some kind of a secret but I can´t wait to spread the news quite soon. I also did some remixes which will see the day of light in 2018. I just finished a mix for Steve Bug and our good friend Clé.

John Tejada is a Vienna-born, Los Angeles-based electronic music composer, DJ, and professor at CalArts. Tejada’s professional output of music began in 1994 and has never let up, including four albums for the revered label Kompakt, plus releases on Pokerflat, Cocoon, Plug Research, Seventh City, Playhouse, Defected, and his own label since 1996, Palette Recordings. Tejada has also been responsible for remixing over 100 songs for acts including The Postal Service, Télépopmusic, The Field, Bomb The Bass, Way Out West, Kevin Saunderson, Darren Emerson, Gui Boratto, Simian Mobile Disco and many others. Tejada’s latest venture as Wajatta is a new musical collaboration with international star Reggie Watts, having released their debut album, Casual High Technology, in 2018 and latest album Don’t Let Get You Down in 2020 on Brainfeeder.

Today marks the release of John's fourth LP, 'Year of the Living Dead' which John's describes here;

“The album was started using tools I was unfamiliar with, which became an interesting exploratory process,” Tejada says. “Staying away from the obvious and having to re-learn simple things was a fun challenge.” You can hear these new creative pulsions pushing the eight tracks on Year Of The Living Dead ever-forward; the album has a unique cast, and though there are trace elements of the genres Tejada has indulged previously, he’s never quite put them together this way before. There’s the dubwise glitter sprinkled across the moody opener “The Haunting Of Earth”, the kind caresses found amongst the deftly woven textures of “Sheltered”, and the churchy melancholy, all hymnal and golden, of “Echoes Of Life”
