It’s been 15 years since SIK and MJ got together for Freerange so we’re chuffed to welcome them back again for the release of the Paper Cut EP. As you can expect when these two join forces, things get lush, jazzy, deep and chunky. The title track kicks things off in fine style with layers of strings bringing the widescreen cinematic vibe whilst a punchy square wave bassline and crisp drums ensure we don’t stray far from the dancefloor. Next up we have Hit Thinking which once again sees Shur-i-kan bringing his musical touch with extra live horns courtesy of Finn Peters. Something of a jazz odyssey this one! Wrapping up this lovely 3 tracker is Sixth Section which sees Milton Jackson take the lead with his trademark bouncing synth line and shuffled groove.

Beatservice Records are thrilled to present the latest mesmerising single from leftfield maestro Third Attempt, who digs deep into his sonic repertoire to serve the full-bodied rolling groove of 'Nu Funk'.

Oslo's Torje Fagertun Spilde – better known as Third Attempt – is quickly making a name for himself as one of the most reliably exciting producers to emerge from Norway's rich meta-disco lineage. His last single, 'Age Of Steam', arrived bursting with bass-heavy funk flex, and we're thrilled to report that his newest effort is no less kinetically charged. As the name suggests, 'Nu Funk' is a contemporary exploration of deeply-rooted funk sensibilities. Combining warm bass with tightly constructed beats, Third Attempt dexterously merges far-reaching musical aesthetics that include trip hop, funk, soul and disco to deliver a sound that – although endowed with vintage sensibilities – feels proudly up to date.

The track begins with snappy hip hop vocal samples scratched over tight beats and a delectable bass guitar hook. The groove pauses for dubbed-out space delays to echo into the night before a singing lead guitar joins the rhythm elements to burst back into life. Forging a heads-down furrow from which there's no escape, the seductive beats maintain the course as vocal chops, flute motifs, elegant strings, and otherworldly sweeps elegantly meander across the panorama.

Just as we've come to expect from Third Attempt, this is warm, organic and utterly alluring work. Taken from a forthcoming album that's set to land in the coming months, we are beyond excited to hear what the young talent will come up with next.

JUNO REVIEW: 'This Berlin tech house hero delivered the brilliant Left Handed album last year on his Arms & Legs imprint which he runs with Nils Ohrmann. It now gets remixed and what a tremendous roll call there is on this one, where do we start? Maybe with the undisputed legends that he tapped first, such as Chicago's Paul Johnson who gives "Bones" that distinct kind of boompty bounce that only a Windy City DJ can. Speaking of which, Chi-town legend Robert Armani is back on the scene it seems and gives "Punch' a jacking hard house remix that calls to mind the sound of classic imprints like Relief Records or Dance Mania. Toronto deep house legend Nick Holder also makes a comeback with his remix of "No One Can Change Me" which is exactly the kind of bittersweet and emotive deepness you always remembered him for. Big shouts to UK legends 808 State and Crazy P who deliver some great renditions too.'

Shir Khan's back with his trusty team of terrace-friendly edit specialists, alchemy masters of turning the raw ore of disco's past into soundsystem ready house bangers for the outdoor summer parties! James Jackson & Siege are first to step up to the cauldron, throwing in one of the catchiest coastal disco tracks ever into the pot, adding some woodblock (yes!) and applying some gentle low pass filter which teases in the track beautifully. Tiptoes reworks some low slung jazz funk business into a midtempo roller, perfect for that lazy walk to the bar while you top up your margarita or daiquiri, stopping off for a chat with some sexy looking ladies / gents on the way.... Illyus & Barrientos takes us firmly through to late night action on "Bare Fruits" - instantly transporting us to some Iberian sweatbox where the party never stops; and "You Says" which takes us through back into the sunrise and into the next day of holiday partying. Remember, the fun never stops when Shir Khan's in town.

Berlin-based Dessous Recordings never disappoints. Steve Bug has built the label as a platform for his deep and vocal oriented house leanings, and manages to continually curate an incredibly prolific release schedule. So much so, that it is hard to stay on top of - luckily for us, the label occasionally gathers together tracks in a handy compilation, such as this We Like It Deep release.

The compilation is full of highlights from the label’s roster, including killer tunes from the likes of Langenberg, James Dexter, Tom Flynn, Vincenzo and Thierry Thomas. The vibe is exactly what Dessous had become famous for - deeply felt house music with tonnes of emotion and an innate feel for what works on the floor.

Having already caught my eye with a few key releases on top underground labels, I was thrilled to get a demo from Belgian artist ColorJaxx in the end of 2019. I admire his style, flair, and production value on every track he produces. His debut EP has a uniquely Chicago-sounding vibe that is a perfect fusion of both deep and jacking House. Enjoy!
