Nothing seemed to start today; from lifting his head off the pillow to tricking his mind into thinking the day ahead would actually be productive. Going back to bed felt like the only feasible option; the only way to erase these thoughts and start back at square one. Sometimes shutting off from the world before rejoining was all that was needed to set the wheels in motion again.

Following their first foray into releasing a full EP, London-based non-profit label Shubzin get back to basics with the fourth instalment of their VA charity compilation series. This time they've invited 14 new producers to contribute original tracks that range from jungle to leftfield bass and experimental — and, as always, it's for a very good cause.

After raising money for several different charities through their previous comps, they now focus their support on Sisters Uncut, a charity who challenges gendered violence and government cuts to social and community services, and who were instrumental in leading the Kill the Bill marches against new draconian changes to policing and prison laws.

pi pi pi premiere: Destrata - Meridian (Of Paradise)

Canadian producer Destrata enters the series with a bubbling bass bath that leans into both the old and new school featuring tracks from Jurango, Piezo, Doctor Jeep, Mia Koden, INVT and a couple of unreleased gems for good measure. 

Most recently releasing on Darwin’s SPE:C and Of Paradise imprint, Destrata also co-runs the Audio Social mix series and is one half of the production duo Energy Boyz.

In his short career so far, Destrata has worked with a who’s who of essential underground labels, making his debut in 2021 on Martyn’s seminal 3024 with the hybrid drum workout ‘Bait & Switch’. 

Now making his first appearance on London’s Scuffed Recordings, Destrata offers up three new tracks on the Mutationist EP.

Closing the release is Desire Signal, which sees Destrata dial back the pace for a writhing techno-dancehall hybrid.

Vancouver’s Destrata returns to Scuffed Recordings with three new tracks on his Keepsake EP, backed by a remix from SUCHI.

Originally appearing on London-based label Scuffed in 2023 with his Mutationist EP, Destrata picked up support from the likes of Leon Vynehall, rRoxymore, and Anz among others. Having also released with a ‘who’s who’ of electronic labels in his short career including 3024, SPE:C, and Of Paradise, Destrata was also named an artist to watch in 2024 by Mixmag.

Now returning with his Keepsake EP, Destrata describes his latest work as being altogether more melodic than his previous releases, while keeping drum work front and centre - or as he puts it, “My bass music friends think I make techno & my techno friends think I make bass music.”

Destrata’s melodically-focussed outlook is obvious from the outset, with lofty synths and vocal chops contrasting warping bass and skippy percussion across the EP’s three tracks.
