Love Drug feat. Fritz Helder (Animal Trainer Remix)

Building on the big impact of the first two releases from label boss Tim Green and Luca Lozano & Mr Ho, Disc Over Music is back with an excellent new EP from Nicson. The four-track package comes with a standout remix from long standing house champion, DIY Discs man and former member of downbeat duo, Bent, namely Nail aka Neil Tolliday.

The fast rising Nicson appeared on the label’s last release with a fantastic remix and now deservedly gets a full EP of his own. Before now he has also released on Flumo Recordings and has proven himself to be an adept studio hand with a unique house perspective, so it’s for that reason that he has more music soon to come on Souvenir and Get Physical. 

His moody ‘New Beginnings’ track is a supple, elastic bit of house with an undulating, rubbery bassline, well-defined percussive claps and a teasing sense of tension. ‘Late Night Rider’ is a little slower, more purposeful and squelchy. Here rattling metal hits sit next to indecipherable vocal sounds and the whole thing works on a philosophy of less is more. The final original here is ‘Simply Things’, another well chiselled bit of boom bap house that really urges you to dance. The claps are crisp and the groove is spacious, the mod is unsettled and occult and as such the whole thing really keeps your attention. 

Nottingham’s Nail, who is enjoying a resurgence after helping to define house music in the ‘90s on labels like Classic, now pops up on Robsoul and his own Shabby Doll with music that is just as essential. His fantastic remix of ‘Simply Things’ is a slinky, meaty affair with firm drums, well-treated vocal snippets and a never-ending groove. 

This is another well-assembled package from Disc Over that proves the label is well and truly on the pulse.
