Deep, trippy and hypnotic. That pretty much sums up the new Nacreous-EP by Shoal on the Dutch imprint NOWHERE. The title refers to a certain glow or color that mother-of-pearl radiates. Shoal is the alter ego of Utrecht-resident Kenny Dean Kneefel. When you have a name that sounds like a famous stuntman, you are probably prepared to take more risks.

And indeed that's exactly what this producer from the lowlands does on Nacreous. Shoal's four track EP combines hallucinant grooves with delicate sound design. Like on Bygone Drums, where ominous distant sounds from a nearby factory creep between the shadows. The same can be said of the title track, a tribalistic tune with a delicate dark undertone.

Never Endings is more uplifting, with its dubbed out basslines and crispy hi-hats. Dubtechno that reminds us of both Monolake and Fluxion. Closing track Morning Float is indeed that, a trip in a blue tank filled with warm water, where you are comforted by beautiful strings and sounds of nature.

Layers of Emptiness cuts straight to the core of a modern techno scene fixated on quantity over quality. It’s the race to layer four decks at once, to push the BPM higher, to cram in as many drops and transitions as possible—all at the expense of genuine soul. There’s an eerie hollowness in these overstuffed sets, a frantic desire to be the loudest or the fastest rather than the most heartfelt. It’s a reminder that sometimes, in chasing all the layers and effects, we lose the raw spark that originally drew us to the music. Layers of Emptiness peels back those endless loops and reveals a stark truth: speed and complexity mean nothing without the pulse of real emotion.

The ever productive Conforce returns to one of his key home labels for another exploration of his prolific deep sea techno sound. His Haedron EP has a firm dance floor focus, designed to propel you ever further forwards. 

'Haedron' sets things off with smeared chords adding scale to the knocking beats. Hi-hats glisten like light beams penetrating the deep ocean and it’s a typically warm and comforting track from the Dutchman. 'Scorched Earth' has harder techno kicks forcing you forwards. An ecosystem of claps, hats and twisted pads bring plenty of energy and suspense to the party, then 'Muon Transverse Momentum' manages to mix up hugely expansive chords with pillowy but dynamic drums and oodles of cuddly reverb. Last of all, 'Quantum Phaser' ups the ante with some timeless dub techno vibes that mixes Basic Channel with Planet E to mesmeric effect.
