PREMIERE: B2 - Aiden Francis - Temporal Drift [ND028]

In our era of post-truth & questioned realities, tin foil hatted folk project their insecurities onto the puppet masters, those holding the strings to us all, the endless psy-op at play. For those opting for psychedelic enlightenment over psychological terror, we find solace in the dance, especially when the music is from heads such as Jeku. 

‘Peyote Trance’ follows the Helsinki based artists journey into the “trip”, where mother nature instead pulls the strings. A sound of trance often not followed, continuing the work of forebearers such as eXquisite CORpsE; where the zap of the synapses in the brain connect with the bubble & squeak of electronics. Creating a sound advanced by nature, yet resonating within the concrete walls us ravers know and love. All 4 tracks harness a kinetic energy that nudges you to ascendance, not desperately reaching for it like the heavy handed aesthetics of the genre can. Instead, the heads down motion of the music can take you there, and well, a little bit of Peyote might just help, as mother nature intended.

'Our premiere, the B1 flip, ‘Forward Sinking’ transcends into darker elements and elevates away from the summer-infused cuteness of the A-side with a moonlit bolt of progressive techno. The sharp kick and Congo drums set the foundations of a tribalistic dance-floor encounter, as the bass operates in the shadows, bubbling and exuding a dark plume of groove. In the higher echelons, echoes of bolting synth-lines charge through the mix like shooting stars, illuminating a beautifully dark and night-like atmosphere. VENN is the freshly spawned label from Seoul-based DJ Botermelk. The debut EP is delivered from the man himself, with 3 tuff club-ready original mixes and an introspective remix from Bristolian wizard 'Boulderhead' making up the fabric of the record. Since relocating to Seoul from London over a decade ago, DJ Botermelk is an ever present figure in the Seoul underground, producing and DJing but also throwing parties under the VENN brand and exposing the local scene to some wicked artists: including Baldo, DJ Pipe and DJ Life, Aldonna and more. Now expanding VENN into label territories, it's time for the imprint to firmly stamp its authority on the international scene.

B1, 'Rearview' diverts the vibe of the flip of the record into a chamber of peak-time techiness, issuing a warning that this is a producer and label that can do both the minimal and maximal. Rearview is a stompy weapon with wicked drum-play. The bruising kick is matched with steppy snares and simmering hats, as rumbling breaks announce themselves mid-way to pack out the spaces and increase the ruggedness of the beats.
